either the tascam US122 or US144 could fit in alaptop bag. The uS144 is alittle
bigger/bulkier. They both have 2 mic/line inputs.

I've found I really haven't had to change anything yet with the fast track.
Now, down the road once I get more proficient, I may kick myself for that,
but for now, I don't think I've even wanted to be tempted to open it, but
maybe once, and that was just to see what it would do, and is it accessible.

I assume that transport bar is in my edit window? Also, what is it doing by
hitting that button, is that actually doing the count off, or is that only
toggling it, so when I hit F12 to record, it'll do it.

Finally, if I need more than 2, how does one change it?

I believe the default count-off is 2 bars. In the Transport window, go to the

Re: portable interface recommendation

2012-04-05 Thread The Oreo Monster
The control panell actually seems pretty accessible on the mac with voice
over, i just plugged in my 144 and opened it up and could see all the options
and etc. That being said the only thing u would need it for atleast on the 144
is changing the clock source for the digital inputs. It automatically by
default would follow the sample rate of the project you are working in. So you
don't need to go in ther to change sample rate or bit depth, or for any of the
direct monitoring stuff. The US144 MKII which i haave has 5 knobs on the unit.
1 Gain knob each for each of the analog inputs, of which there are 2 and theh
can take xlr or 1/4' balanced or unbalanced. There is a knob that sets the mix
between direct monitoring and comes playing back from your DAW. So at 12 o
clock its a 50/50 mix, all the way to one side you only hear the daw, all the
way to ther other side you only hear the direct signal. Then there is a
headphone volume knob and a volume knob for the speaker outs. There is also a
phantom power switch, a hi z/lowz switch so u can use line level or plug an
instrument in directly with the 1/4 ins, and a mono/stereo switch , which when
in mono everything is monitored centered through the direct monitoring. When
in stereo mode, whatever comes in on channel 1 is on the left and channel 2 is
on the right. I believe this just for monitoring and not for recording. The
US122 if i am not mistaken just doesn't have the digital inputs and doesn't
have a separate knob for headphones and speaker volume.

Hi Nick,

Go under the setups menu to Preferences. In the Preferences dialog, check the
box for "Insertion Follows Scrub." Also, if you want the insertion to follow
playback, there's a checkbox for that too but there's a keyboard shortcut which
is Control-n. That'll toggle the behavior.

One important thing to note about insertion following playback:
If you make a selection within a range, playing back will lose your selection.
When insertion does not follow playback, your selection range will be
maintained. That said, an alternative is to use the "Play Edit Selection"
shortcut (which I don't remember off the top of my head).

Hi Gord,

Meter value is set by creating a meter event. Just as default tempo is always
120 bpm, the default meter is always 4/4. If you want anything other than that,
you'll need to go into in the Event menu under Time Operations and choose Meter
Event. There, you need to double-click on the first value, tab to the second
and enter that. There are a few other options to check out in the dialog if
applicable and make sure you click on the Apply button.

Editing meter and tempo events is not very accessible at all right now. That's
one of the things on the top 10 list for improvements regarding accessibility.

setting initial time signature

2012-04-05 Thread Gordon Kent
Hi:
I’m trying to set a time signature of 12/8. In the transport view in the midi
control cluster, where it says meter value I can’t get it to read anything and
I don’t know how to set a value there. If I try mouse clicking on it and
entering a value with the numeric keypad and then pressing enter I get the
locate dialog up. How would I do this?

Re: portable interface recommendation

2012-04-05 Thread The Oreo Monster
My vote in this catogory is still the tascam US122 or US144, i believe both are
in the MKII iterations now. 2 mic inputs or line inputs, midi in and out
headphones jack only minor gripe is the speaker outs are on rca jacks instead
of balanced quarter inch or xlr jacks, but theres ways around it and thats
probably not a concern for someone starting out. For around $100 the US122
can't be beat and for around $130 the US144 adds digital in and outs over
S/PDIF. I own the 144 so can answer specific questions on that if you want.
Also the tascams interface is bus powered so no power suppply needed, and
plenty of gain for dynamic mics on the built in preamps.
