Need to insert a retard

2014-10-18 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK guys, so here is the deal. I'm doing an arrangement of the gospel hymn
Because He Lives. For those who haven't heard it, it's in 4/4 time, and I'm
doing it at 80BPM. Here's the deal though. The song is 93 bars long. At
bar 91 until the end of the song I want to do a retard to slow down the
tempo a bit. This may sound like a huge, huge, huge amount to slow down by,
but trust me, I've actually done this song back in the days with Sonar, and
I did this exact retard this way, and it sounded gorgeous! Anyway, starting
at bar 91, until 93, so basically, the last 3 bars, I want to keep it in my
4 4 time, but I need the tempo to automatically slow down to 60 beats per
minute, instead of 80 like the rest of the song. Then, that 60BPM will take
us out to the end of the arrangement. I have gone into my edit screen with
command+equals, and I most certainly have set the counter to
bars/beats/ticks. I've also set the constant over all tempo to 80BPM, so
all that's perfect. I just now need to know how to do this one little part
to 60, then I'll have it down.

Thanks. I'm using ProTools 11.2 with OSX Mavericks if that helps.

Chris.

Re: Need to insert a retard

2014-10-18 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Chris,

1. Select the range from bar 91 to bar 93.
2. Go to Events > Tempo Operations and select either Linear or Parabolic.
Each of those will give you a somewhat different result. Start with Linear to
see if it'll give you the result you're looking for.
Make sure the range appears in the Linear window as you had selected prior to
entering the Linear Tempo Event window.
You'll see that the starting tempo will be 80 and the ending tempo will be 80
as well. Click on the End tempo and press delete a few times. Enter 60 and hit
the Apply button. Do not press the "Preserve Tempo After Selection button or
the tempo will jump back to 80 bpm at bar 93.
If you choose the Parabolic curve instead, you'll be given the extra option of
defining the curve. Negative numbers will start the descent sooner while
positive numbers will start the curve more gradually at first and faster toward
the end of the selected region. Experimentation will help you find what you're
looking for. Naturally, a Click track will help you hear the results which I'm
sure you're already doing.

Thank you so so much Slau. This is the exact info I needed. Wonderful!

Hi Chris,

1. Select the range from bar 91 to bar 93.
2. Go to Events > Tempo Operations and select either Linear or Parabolic.
Each of those will give you a somewhat different result. Start with Linear
to see if it'll give you the result you're looking for.
Make sure the range appears in the Linear window as you had selected prior
to entering the Linear Tempo Event window.
You'll see that the starting tempo will be 80 and the ending tempo will be
80 as well. Click on the End tempo and press delete a few times. Enter 60
and hit the Apply button. Do not press the "Preserve Tempo After Selection
button or the tempo will jump back to 80 bpm at bar 93.
If you choose the Parabolic curve instead, you'll be given the extra option
of defining the curve. Negative numbers will start the descent sooner while
positive numbers will start the curve more gradually at first and faster
toward the end of the selected region. Experimentation will help you find
what you're looking for. Naturally, a Click track will help you hear the
results which I'm sure you're already doing.
