Hi Nick well myself, I use the motu 896 mark 3. It has 8 very good mic line 
prees. It connects with fire wire or Usb. I also have a focus right box that 
has 8 more mic line prees. it connects fire optical cables. s on it. so i can 
record up to 16 tracks at once if need be. can’t remember the model number of 
this thing, but i’ll get it if you want it.

As far as the control surface, i use the mackie control surface. H t h
If you want a smaller set up, there is also a presonus baudio ox that i use 
with just 4 mic line prees, and that’s about all it’s got. certainly not the 
sound of the motu, but gnot bad at all really, ood enough for out in the field 
recording.

Re: maxamising the screen

Hi Steve,
Hitting the zoom button should normally do the trick. Other than that, Keyboard 
Maestro has a macro for maximizing the screen. If I'm ever in doubt, I use that 
macro to ensure the frontmost window is as large as it can be.

If I were in the market for a new interface, I'd go for the Focusrite
Clarit 8 or 8x or the Motu 896MK2 or MK3.

few months back, but wound up not needing it after all.

Re: maxamising the screen

CMD+Control+F is the shortcut for sending an app full screen, not for 
maximizing. similar yet very different. CMD+CTRL+F will only work on apps that 
have a full screen option, unfortunately Pro Tools never took advantage of that 
newer apple design concept and integrated  it into Pro tools. TO maximize just 
Vo all the way to the left until you find the Set of buttons that says, Close, 
Minimize and Zoom. You will want to click the Zoom  button to maximize.

This is the rub.

Every company is moving to this software control panel.
This is where you route your headphones and other output pairs, turn direct 
monitoring on and off, add any direct monitoring effects, etc.
The other rub is that the factory defaults for these settings are often not 
desirable, so you have no idea what needs to be changed until you get the unit..

I have beaten my head against the wall to try and find the interface that has 
the most accessible control panel, but without purchasing every one of these 
units to see what the status is, I can only go on hearsay from folks in the 
field.
The fortunate thing about the Scarlet control panel is the fact that it uses a 
standard open dialog box to load control panel settings.
Plus, you can temporarily load settings depending on your needs, and when you 
want the machine to permanently retain the settings, you can burn it to flash 
memory so when you power off the device, those settings are saved.

I am not sure what the status is on the newly released U-phoria interface from 
Behringer: whether it uses a control panel interface or not. I will dig through 
the manual to see what the deal is.

This is the unfortunate Byproduct of companies trying to provide digital 
solutions to analog problems.

Instead of letting the Daw handle routing, which daws are very capable of 
doing, they’re providing these virtual environments, which unfortunately lock 
us out of being able to take full advantage of these units.

The scarlet 18 – I 20 has its own power supply. So does the octoPre.  The 
octoPre cannot be used as a standalone interface for your daw.  It's design is 
to expand other interfaces via adat.

When the company I work for was setting up equipment for our first run of 
students back in 2014, we tried the 892 mk3, and I absolutely hated it’s 
interface for configuring and routing audio. It has these push pots that can 
put you into all these crazy modes.
You could be leaning over your interface to plug something in and bump 1 or 2 
of these and end up in some weird mode where nothing was working as you’d 
expect.

Also, I hated the fact that the pots were digital and detented. It drives me 
nuts when these interface manufacturers try to provide some digital solution to 
an analog problem, IE pots on a preamp.

MOTU has always made great interfaces, but I happened to hate the 892 from 
usability standpoint.

Hi, Good suggestions does the presonus require any external power or 
does it run off of the computer's power?  I will have a look at both of 
those products you talked about and does the box you connect to your 
main interface to expand it have any USB connections on it? Will it work

Well stated. The only reason I've ever had to change anything in the control 
panel was to turn off real-time monitoring. I prefer the monitoring  through 
ProTools so I know for sure what is being recorded.  In fact. Kevin provided me 
with this snapshot.  So all I had to do was loaded into the control panel and 
everything was done.

Hi, Well as they are not made anymore and as Avid told me they will 
officially stop supporting that interface soon I want something that is 
modern and the firewire port on it is a 400 so I had to get an adapter 
cable to make it work with the 800 port on my system I want something

preamps and at least 8 quarter inch line in jacks and works with Pro 
Tools 12 pritty much out of the box where I just install the drivers 
and start recording as I plan to get the control surface later unless 
one exist that is with the moving controls like my old Digi 003 had 
as I got the trade in value for it and need to replace it as soon as 
possible more then 8 inputs and outputs and more then 4 microphone 
preamps would be helpful of course and either USB firewire 800 or 
thunderbult would work fine.  Support on windows 10 would be nice but

I’m a huge fan of the scarlet. But if $499 isn’t in your budget, I wanted to 
hip you to the new Behringer U-Phoria that has just come out.

This is in direct competition with the Scarlet, and has the same preamps that 
are in the X32 line. I’ve heard these preamps and they sound great. If you go 
on youtube and search for Behringer X32 board mix, you’ll hear them in action 
with tons of videos.

The u-phoria is only $199, so could meet your needs as well.

I’m not sure what Behringer’s control panels are like, but the scarlet’s panel 
is not accessible under mac, but I think, according to chad, can be used under 
windows, and you can burn the settings to the machine permanently.

settings as I would rather not deal with a device that has portions I

Hi, Why would you want to change the sample rate and bit rate in the 
interface as I normally I want to record at 24 or 32 bit at 96KHZ in Pro 
Tools so does this mean that I have to first setup the interface then 
setup Pro Tools for the same settings?  This interface sounds like the 
one I wish to buy and if I could get all of my settings setup that I 
wish to use before I leave the store then I would be ok with it and of 
course I would write the company about these issues as I think they need

You’d have to change the sample rate because you’d have no idea what it is from 
the factory.

Also, don’t worry about setting the settings at the store. Chad and I both have 
presets that are optimal for Pro Tools, and we can just give you that file.

This is the rub.

Every company is moving to this software control panel.
This is where you route your headphones and other output pairs, turn direct 
monitoring on and off, add any direct monitoring effects, etc.
The other rub is that the factory defaults for these settings are often not 
desirable, so you have no idea what needs to be changed until you get the 
unit..
From what I’m gathering from others in the field, tons of these control 
panels are inaccessible, and the ones that are, oddly enough, are accessible 
via windows.
I have beaten my head against the wall to try and find the interface that 
has the most accessible control panel, but without purchasing every one of 
these units to see what the status is, I can only go on hearsay from folks 
in the field.
The fortunate thing about the Scarlet control panel is the fact that it uses 
a standard open dialog box to load control panel settings.
Plus, you can temporarily load settings depending on your needs, and when 
you want the machine to permanently retain the settings, you can burn it to 
flash memory so when you power off the device, those settings are saved.


I am not sure what the status is on the newly released U-phoria interface 
from Behringer: whether it uses a control panel interface or not. I will dig 
through the manual to see what the deal is.


This is the unfortunate Byproduct of companies trying to provide digital 
solutions to analog problems.


Instead of letting the Daw handle routing, which daws are very capable of 
doing, they’re providing these virtual environments, which unfortunately 
lock us out of being able to take full advantage of these units.

the presonus audio box is called an audio box 44. yes it requires an external 
power supply. There is a smaller one which does not require external power, but 
it only has two moc line preess. i did actually give the little one a go, as i 
was just doing some two track transferring. but it does not seem to have much 
head room. the 44 is quite good, i’m glad i went with it, as it has proved very 
useful since then.  
I use a focus right octopree  to extend my studio set up and give me more mic 
line press. Not sure about using it as a stand alone interface, i’ve never 
tried. Someone else might be able to give you more information on this.

interface as I normally I want to record at 24 or 32 bit at 96KHZ in Pro
Tools so does this mean that I have to first setup the interface then

Yeah i am debating between that one and the 404HD one since its got inserts for 
all the inputs and a basic monitor switcher built in .

Been eyeing a few of the behringer U-Phoria stuff and the ones i looked at  
seem to be core audio compatible out of the box, which means no  drivers to 
install and no petty control software to mess with. Not sure if the the one 
kevin mentioned falls into this category though. 

The DAW will usually force the sample rate on the audio interface so if you are 
just changing sample rate most modern interfaces will follow and change based 
on the DAW. However if you want to monitor with their built in effects or set 
up for a ADAT  set of mic press attached to the unit you may have to go into 
the the control panel for the interface. 

The other thing you mentioned is you wanted nothing with better preamps. than 
your 003. But if you go with the scarlet or behringer you are probably more 
moving sideways as in they are probably about all equivalent give or take in 
sound quality. Until you start looking at stuff like Apogee, some of the 
universal audio interfaces or the FocusRiteClarrette range you really won’t be 
stepping up. That being said unless your studio is making your a very nice 
profit, no need to step up yet. 

Lastly be aware of using ADAT to extend your interface if you like to record at 
96khz.  As ADAT will subtract 2 channels  for every sample rate you go above 
48khz.  Tuscan is the only company i seen recently that did 16 channels in one 
interface not requiring dat and that isn’t a mixer. I think the US1800 and 
US1640 maybe?

control panel needed. There is a direct monitoring knob on the unit, and a 
button for setting sample rate for external digital devices.

For $199, this may be an incredible bang for the buck.

I think I’ll take the plunge here in a few weeks and grab one. I’ll report back.

I have been using the focusrite scarlett 18–i20 and have pretty good luck 
with it.   Basic settings can even be changed with use of the Jaws cursor in 
windows. However, on mac the control panel is not usable at all.  The way I 
get around this is by saving any figuration I might need to a snapshot and 
just reloaded whenever I need it.
