Using LoopBack with Pro Tools
Has anyone on the list used LoopBack to route audio into Pro Tools at all, is it easy to do? I do a lot of quick Radio interviews with guests on Teams at work and via Zoom too and at the moment I am using the Zoom F6 recorder to record my interviews and then import the files into Pro Tools to edit them which works really well but I am thinking of doing everything in Pro Tools instead. A couple of questions I have about doing this: If I am recording the interview with my guest via Teams or Zoom is it easy to do this through Pro Tools, are there any issues with me hearing my guest and my guest hearing me, do I need to make sure the I/O is set up in a certain way? One other thing I am thinking of doing is having VoiceOver come into Pro Tools too onto a separate track so that I can quickly fade VoiceOver up and down when I need to hear it or to have VoiceOver routed in a way so that I am the only person that hears it and not my guest as I wil need to hear VoiceOver feedback but don’t necessarily want my guest to hear VoiceOver when we are chatting and recording. Obviously I could within the Mac and Voice Over settings have VoiceOver going to my Mac speaker and headphones and have Pro Tools go through my interface and use my Apple EarPods for VoiceOver and my headphones plugged into my interface for Pro Tools but as I mainly work off headphones I like to have both coming through my headphones when I am normally working with Pro Tools. I might be just trying to make things to complicated and could just stay as I am! Any thoughts comments greatly welcome. help with setting up a new Mac Mini with PT, etc...
Hi, I have just taken delivery of a 2018 Mac Mini as my old MacBook Pro battery decided to die on me the other day and although she is now plugged into the wall all the time wich is fine but she is now starting to show her age a bit too so I thought I would update my Mac system. I could not wait until say September time when a new M1 Mac Mini or MacBook Pro comes out and maybe by then a new version of PT would be out too but that is wishful thinking and maybe a long way away! So I have a 2018 Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM which should hopefully work a lot faster than my old MacBook Pro that only has 8GB of RAM. So my question is how easy is it to move my PT EUControl software and licences to my new Mac Mini. I know I can do a TimeMachine back up of my MacBook Pro and restore from a back up on the Mac Mini but for a number of reasons I don’t want to do that and just start the Mac Mini from scratch and adding just what I need rather than too much other stuff that I don’t need. Is it just as simple as installing PT, EUControl from Avid and then installing iLock, signing in and plugging in my iLock dongle and my PT Dock into the Mac Mini? I am lucky that I have a wife who is sighted but she is more of a Windows person and not a Mac person and gets frustrated with Mac stuff. So I just wondered how easy it would be to take PT, EUConttrol to my new Mac Mini and plug in the PT Dock and off I go again? Any thoughts comments greatly welcome. Looking for advice for dialogue and speech plugins
Hi Guys, Looking for some advice on plugins for working with dialogue and speech. This is all pretty much new to me so maybe some simple questions here! from me AS you all know I work in radio and mainly with speech output plus also putting some music shows together too. I have been playing around with some of the AudioSuite plugins that come with Pro Tools which work well but now looking for adding in some other plugins to my workflow if it is all fairly straight forward to do. One thing I have read about online is how it might be possible to find a plugin that will do upward compression to bring variations in speech up to give a more even volume and level. Not sure if there is a plugin out there that does this although I have seen a video using a Waves plugin for vocals which seems to smooth out the sound of the voice. Also a friend has mentioned some of the Waves Arts plugins too. So how easy is it to add in plugins and how accessible are they with Voice Over in Pro Tools. I have seen a lot of traffic on the WhatsAp group about many music and instrument plugins and talk about the various Plugin files in the Dropbox folder. If I do start to look at adding some plugins into PT how accessible is the process with VoiceOver, do I need to download VOCR and if I need to use any of the files from the Dropbox plugin folders is it fairly straightforward to do this. If there is anything in the dropbox folder or online that would be good to read first please do point me in the right direction. Re: Connecting a USB interface and mixer to MacBook Pro
Hi Michael and everyone, Thankfully I got my zedi 10 mixer replaced and it looked like there was an issue with either the interface or the cable which was causing the connection issues. When setting up the mixer in PT apart from selecting the ZEDI in the playback engine settings do I need to make any other changes of any other settings in the hardware settings or i/o settings. Strangely I am finding that the playback channel in the mixer seems to be very high and if I turn the fader for this channel right down I can still just hear some faint sound coming through my headphones which are connected to the mixer. Also doing a test recording with a Mic plugged into the mixer which sounds fine through the mixer and in my headphones but when I play back the recorded track back the recording sounds very low. I imported a music track which sounded great coming through the mixer. Is there something I am missing here? Am I doing something wrong? Any advice greatly welcom. Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. I have thought of getting a USB C to USB B cable and might go down that route. I have just ordered a couple of USB C adapters suggested by Allen and Heath. Connecting a USB interface and mixer to MacBook Pro
Hi, I have recently purchased an Allen and Heath ZEDI 10 interface / mixer to use with my MacBook Pro both as an interface for use with recording straight into Pro Tools and with Zoom too. The mixer works really well on it’s own (not connected to my Mac) which is great. So I decided to plug the mixer into my MacBook Pro via the standard Apple USB C to USB 2 adapter thinking that it would just plug and play. The Mixer has a Type-B USB connector on it and supplied with a USB 2 connecting cable. i plugged the cable into the mixer and the other end into the Apple USB C to USB 2 adapter. Through the mixer headphones I was picking up a lot of interference such as a sort of clicking noise. Then my Mac started coming up with notifications that the USB ports had been disconnected because a connected USB device was taking up too much power. I have contacted Allen and Heath and they have suggested plugging in the USB 2 cable into another adapter but I only have a few of the Apple ones that everyone purchased when the MacBooks came out with USB C ports. They Also suggested that I might not have my MacBook set up properly for external audio interfaces and devices and they sent me a link to a couple of online articles from SweetWater. Would getting hold of a type B to USB C cable possibly solve the issue. Should I have gone with another interface / mixer that would be USB C compatible. Only really need something with max 4 mono channels and a couple of stereo channels. Hi Slau, Licences have all now been moved to my Ilok dongle, thanks. All straight forward in the end. It’s just when you see a dialogue box with text you suddenly think am I doing the right thing! Ilok moving Pro Tools Licence from Ilok Cloud to Ilok Dongle
Hi, I am in the process of moving my Pro Tools licence from Ilok Cloud to an Ilock dongle and just wanted to check a couple of things if anyone could clarify the procedure. Slau your demo on using Ilok manager was great and I have successfully registered my new Ilok dongle but before I try and move my Pro Tools licence I just wanted to check a couple of things. In Ilok Manager - if I use Command plus 1 to show ‘all licences’, I can see my Pro Tools licence. If I want to move my PT licence from Ilok Cloud to the Ilok dongle is it just a case of deactivating the licence and then activating it to the dongle? If I choose to deactivate the licence with Command Shift D - do I just press agree? There seems to be some text that VoiceOver reads out… Deactivate to my cloud and set the Ilok cloud to managed mode. Automatic mode - automatically activates all all cloud - enabled licences when a cloud session is opened. managed mode - the ilok the Ilok cloud is managed as a physical location. Activations can be deactivated Individually. I think this is just text but not sure if somehow I needed to select any of these options or as I say they are just text indicating what will happen if I press agree. I assume after I press agree it is just a case of using Command plus 2 for ‘available licences’ highlighting Pro Tools and using Command shift A to activate the licence to the dongle? There is also Avid Falcon AAX Time Subscription in my Ilok Cloud which I suspect wil need to be moved to the dongle too in the same way. just wanted to check I am doing everything right before I take the plunge as i don’t want to end up messing things up and not be able to get back into Pro Tools! Re: Flo Tools Observations
Hi Slau, Again thanks for all your help. Yep I know 8GB of RAM is low in Avid's terms for PT but for what I am doing i.e. not making music it is probably fine until I end up with over 20 tracks! Sorry the ‘one for’ did not mean ’14’ but one item in system dialogues for KM applications. i should have expalined it better. I am running the most up-to-date version of Catalina on my Mac. Thanks for clarifying the items on your Edit window in the demo - just trying to rule out things just in case as it sounded like your Edit window was different to mine. As you say the reading out of level metres is more important in the Mix window. So happy to use my sort of work around if I need to read the levels in the Edit window for now. Thanks for the offer of a call to do a walk through but I think for the moment I will save a call for another time as I suspect it might be something related to available memory. If I get lucky and win the Lottery and upgrade my Mac to a higher spec model with much more RAM I will find out for sure whether it is a memory issue. As always thanks for your kind help. Re: Flo Tools Observations
Hi Slau, Thought it would be easier writing an email rather than a long voice message in the WatsApp group. One first quick question - Does Flo Tools with KM eat up a bit of memory when they are running alongside PT as my MacBook Pro only has 8GB of Ram? I had some strange things happening last night when trying to see what was going on with FT, KM and PT, I had some alerts about low memory pop up a few times and I closed all programmes apart from PT, KM and EU that was running in the background, did a couple of re boots of my MacBook which did seem to stop the low memory alerts popping up. When I did launch PT and when FT kicked in I did get an audio alerts to say that ‘I needed to check that in VO utilities that the tick box had to be ticked to allow VO to access programmes on my Mac’, very strange as I have never unticked this tick box in VO. I checked to see if any system alerts were running as you suggested but nothing apart from one for ‘Applications running in KM. Which I don’t think is actually a pop up just something that is running in the background. Had another go with PT and FT in the Edit window but still could not get it to work. Decided to leave it for the night and sleep on it and have another go this morning. So this morning started again, booting up my MacBook, etc. Still not able to get FT to work in the Edit window. Decided to launch the FT installer again just in case something was missing from the install. The install launched all OK. When Launching PT again, I had a FT audio alert about the VO tick box again for allowing VO to access programmes on my Mac, went into VO utilities, tick box as usual was ticked to allow VO to access programmes on my Mac, decided to un tick it and then re tick it just in case. When I got into PT I went through the same procedure that you did in your audio demo. In your demo it sounded like when you were on the level metre before activating FT inspector that the level was read out automatically when you were playing the track. I did not initially get any level metre reading out with VO, but when I used VO and the arrow keys VO did read out the levels, not sure if that was what you were doing or whether the levels were being read out automatically when you were on the level metre. Stopped interacting with the track, turned the inspector on and did the same as you did in your demo but still no FT read out when inspector was on and pressing ‘L’. So I decided to go into the Mix window to check to see if FT was reading out the level metres in the Mix window and yes all seemed to be fine in the Mix window like before. Now this is the strange bit as when I went back into the Edit window and did as before I was now able to get FT to read out the level metre readings with inspector on and pressing ‘L’, etc. I then decided to exit out of PT shut down my MacBook and re boot and try this all again to see if wen I am in PT and first go to the Mix window and then into the Edit window will FT work again. Yep and surprise, surprise it did work again but only in the Edit window if i go into the Mix window first and then back into the Edit window. All very strange! I did notice in your demo that when you went from the bottom of the Edit window and did a read to the left that you went straight from the 50 to the ’track list show / hide’ button and currently in the Edit window of PT on my MacBook I go from 50 and then there are buttons for ’show / hide clip list’, ’show / hide docked midi editor’ and then ’show / hide track list’, not sure if this has any affect on the issue. Not totally sure if or how to remove those extra buttons and whether they might be affecting things but might be worth me having a look. not sure if it might be a memory / processor issue but I would have not thought that FT would be using up quite so much processor / memory just to read out the metre levels but maybe with having KM running it is using more processor and memory when performing tasks but the Mix / Edit window thing as above would rule that out maybe. Cheers Toby > On 21 Apr 2020, at 14:23, Slau Halatyn wrote: > > Hi Toby, > Actually, even in the minimal view, the level meter will be there. Re: Flo Tools Observations
Hi Slau, As usual thanks so much for your words of wisdom. I did listen to your demo of the edit window and fully get that VO is seeing things that arn’t in the window. This might sound stupid but how do I get to see the actual level metres in the edit view window. I have checked all the things I think need to be checked when going to the view menu and going down to edit view. I can interact with the tracks in the edit view window and can see that the words level metre are there just above comments and if I interact with the audio i/o I can see more info and click on the output window and of course I get more info there. The track heights are all set to medium too. Maybe I am missing something in the edit window. Flo Tools Observations
Hi, Thanks to all involved in putting Flo Tools together a fantastic bit of software making life a bit easier for all us visually impaired Pro Tools users. I have only recently installed Flo Tools as I was waiting for the upgrade to Pro Tools 2020.3 to become available here in the UK in my Avid Link and then waited a bit for Flo Tools 2020.3.1 to come out too. I have listened to Slau’s great audio introduction to Flo Tools and read through the ReadMe notes before installing and also have been keeping an eye on all the emails and WhatsApp messages about Flo Tools too. So now to my observations on Flo Tools. Firstly, this might be me, might be due to my Mac but am I right in thinking that the Inspector group commands such as ‘L’, ‘V’, ‘m’ etc only work in the Mix window? In the Edit window I can do things like double tapp ‘L’ to turn level metering on and off but don’t get any feedback of the levels unless I am in the Mix window, likewise with volume, etc. When installing I made sure that all the settings for VoiceOver, Pro Tools, Keyboard Maestro and even switching the keyboard to US were done per the instructions in the ReadMe pages. All the Flo Tools short cuts work as should be and the inspector group commands work as mentioned above in the Mix window. So did I miss something in the ReadMe or the great audio introduction to Flo Tools as I spent quite a lot of time today trying to work out why the inspector group commands were not working in the Edit window, going through old PTAccess Group emails, etc. As I say a great piece of software and thanks again for all those involved in Flo Tools. Hi Sean, I now have the Dock working with PT and after a bit of time trying to work out a few things now I am able to make selections of audio with the Dock wheel in jog mode with the keyboard keys such as holding shift while scrubbing and a combination of using command and E to make split clips with using option, shift and tab to select from play point with the wheel back to the split. Not sure if you saw my email to Slau but I wondered how you engage the channel strip and the fader on the Dock to the track you are working on. I had a screen share with a guy from Avid re the Dock and he did something in PT and the fader shot into life and it had been engaged ever since he did what he did but for some reason the fader has dropped down and I can’t seem to work out how to engage it with the track I am editing on. Any tips greatly appreciated. Cheers Toby > On 8 Feb 2020, at 20:27, Sean A. Re: Using a Jog wheel with PT and the arrow keys on the keyboard to make selections
Hi slau, Thanks so much for your WatsApp and email reply. The shift while scrubbing works really well and I am getting used to using Command E to split clips and using shift option tab to select back to the split. One further question…do you know how to engage the only fader channel on the Dock with the track that is playing or being edited. When I had a screen share with Allen from Avid he did something on my Mac which engaged the fader channel on the dock but the fader has now lost engagement with the track. I have emailed him to ask but just wondered if you knew off the top of your head. Cheers for all your help. Using a Jog wheel with PT and the arrow keys on the keyboard to make selections
Hi there, A question for those who use a jog wheel with PT and the keyboard arrow keys to mark the in and out points of a selection. If I use the wheel on the PT Dock in Jog mode and scrub through the audio track and I want to use the down arrow key on the keyboard to mark the in point, use the wheel again to scrub to the place for the out point and press the up arrow key to mark the out point for the selection, for some reason this does not work for me. Is this just me, a setting in PT that I need to change, or totally not possible in PT? Using the keyboard of course I can press the spacebar to play the track and while the track is playing drop in an in and out mark point by pressing the down arrow key and up arrow key while the audio is playing. I can use the wheel in jog mode move around the track and when I stop moving the wheel the audio will play from that point by either using the spacebar on the keyboard or the play button on the Dock. Yes 'insertion follow playback' is unticked. Any help, advice, greatly appreciated. EuCon issue trying to connect control surface with Pro Tools
Hi, I have been trying to connect my new Pro Tools Dock to my Mac but seem to have an issue with EuCon seeing the Dock. I have done all the steps as required so far in setting things up. Connected the Dock to my Mac, switched it on with my Mac up and running. Registered the Dock with Avid. Downloaded and installed EuCon on my Mac. It is after this stage that I have a problem. According to the instructions after installing EuCon and having to restart my Mac to install it, when restarting my Mac with the Dock connected there should be a lit EuCon icon on the task bar. No EuCon icon appears on the Task bar and my sighted wife checked this for me too. In Mac preferences there is a tab for EuCon and an empty table of devices. On Googling around I can’t seem to find any answers or suggestions on how to either get the EuCon onto the task bar or any hints and tips on what to do. I have a USB C to Ethernet adaptor which is connecting my Dock to my Mac and I can see the adaptor in network connections in preferences. I have been into Pro Tools and ticked the box for EuCon connections just in case. I have tried powering down my Mac and Dock and restarting but can’t seem to get them to talk to each other. I would have called Avid Support here in the UK but they are not open over the weekend. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Help with accessing and navigating around the PT Reference Guide
Hi, You all may remember me from a post sometime ago about Pro Tools First and issues with Voice Over. Well I have taken the plunge and now have the full version of Pro Tools on my MacBook Pro with a full external Apple keyboard. I am a freelance radio reporter but not a musician and at the moment I am working with mainly imported audio that I have recorded on location on my professional portable audio recorder. At my early stages of getting to grips with Pro Tools, I have managed to import audio files into PT and have done a bit of editing so far. I have read most of the Pro Tools documentation but finding it a real pain using the ‘Pro Tools Reference Guide’. Has anyone had any joy in navigating around in the PT Reference Guide on their Mac? The PDF opens in Preview and VO reads and indicates chapter links but I can’t seem to make them work, I have tried using Adobe Reader with no joy too, If I use the Help tab in Pro Tools and click on the Reference Guide then VO just indicates an empty web page although my sighted wife says that there is text on the screen. I have done an OCR scan of the PDF file and able to open the file up in Text Edit, Pages, etc but the links in the document have obviously gone. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on a way of being able to access the Pro Tools Reference Guide so that the chapter links work? It’s just a bit frustrating at the moment as I am just starting out with PT and want to quickly use the Reference Guide to look up bits as I go. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Help with Pro Tools First and VoiceOver
Hi There everyone, Thanks so much for all the comments, suggestions and advice. You are all right that Pro Tools full version is best and that PT First is too much of a stripped down version to work with VoiceOver. It's a real shame as I don't need the music side of Pro Tools and unlikely that I am going to need more than 8 tracks for what I want to use PT for. For me at the moment paying out about £25 a month is not something I could afford however, I would be happy to pay for a one off price a stripped down version of PT if it fully worked with VoiceOver. I know there are other DAW out there which do what I want from PT but I want to use a control surface to scrub through the audio with a jog wheel and control the tracks of the mix with faders. I had hoped that PT First would have been the solution for me. I am going to have to think hard about getting some cash together for the full version of PT. This group is great and thanks again. Re: Help with Pro Tools First and VoiceOver
Hi Slau Many thanks for your emails. I have tried to find the PDF documentation regarding set up instructions for optimising Pro Tools for use with VoiceOver and this may be a Pro Tools First thing but on my Mac within Documents/Pro Tools First there does not seem to be a Documentation folder. PT First does seem to be crashing a lot but that might be due to it not being properly optimised. I may have to consider purchasing the full version of Pro Tools but looking at the system requirements for the full version it states that it needs 16GB of RAM and my MacBook Pro 13” 2016 model only has 8GB of RAM. If PT First keeps on crashing I may have to try contacting Avid support but I know from past experience they don’t seem to provide telephone support for PT First. Re: Help with Pro Tools First and VoiceOver
Hi Dammie That’s great and many thanks for your quick response and great tips! I will certainly give it all a go over the weekend. I have been googling around quite a lot over the last few days and noticed some good videos and one which listed a whole load of changes to the Mac and Pro Tools preferences and not sure if I really need to do what they were saying apart from un selecting Command and spacebar to stop it activating spotlight search so it does not conflict with the Pro Tools record short cut. As the video dates back a few years are there any recommended changes I need to do to make Pro Tools First, VoiceOver and my Mac work better? Are you saying that it would be best to download Flowtools now to make things easier and quicker? Where did you find out about the VoiceOver key stroke, was it by trial and error or is there a manual somewhere out there! Sorry for lots more questions! Best and thanks again. Help with Pro Tools First and VoiceOver
Hi, I have used many DAWS over the years for editing speech for radio features, interviews, packages, etc. Want to move to Pro Tools First, have installed it managed to import some audio but looking for any guides for getting started with Pro Tools (First) with VoiceOver, how do you get to start working with an audio track to edit it, how do you scrub through the audio to make fine edits, when adding more tracks to include in the package how do you do it, how do move from one track to another, etc. Sorry lots of questions but really looking for a guide for getting started with Pro Tools First with VoiceOver and using the keyboard to navigate around, scrub through audio, edit and mix. I know there are some good videos but most of them seem to be more for musicians and making music which is not want I want to use Pro Tools for. So any help, resources, links, would be greatly appreciated. Best and thanks Toby -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Pro Tools Accessibility" group.
