Just! when you think no one! can be stupider...
OK, here's a Dommer party of 1 reward for you to laugh your butt off over! I am trying to get ready and record some vocals this morning. So, I bring up PT, and create my session. I add a mono audio track on top of the mix I already have. I arm the track... I hear absolutely no audio through my monitor. OK, something's wrong, I say? So I start looking at the fader on the audio track, it's fine. The gain is up on my interface. The master volume is also up on the interface. I can hear output through my monitors from my keyboard, so I know it isn't something with PT not getting the audio signal. I tap on my mike with my hand, and while doing so, I use the little light preception I have to see if the meter is moving on the interface, and of course, it's not. I plug, and unplug the XLR cable going into my mixer, checking for a loose connection, and do the same on the end going into the actual microphone. All is good tight and snugged, and no cuts or tares in the cable. I check the audio track in PT, to see if the in/out paths are set correctly, and, of course they are. So, you can imagine, by now, I'm going, what the blue flying heck! So, I call a friend a mine who knows a lot about mixers and electronics in a whole. This guy is actually an electrician. I wanted to see if he may know a anything that would be making this happen. We do some more trouble shooting, reboot the macbook, yoddie yodda. Nothing works. All a sudden, he gasps! Wait a minute, Chris! Um? Is yur? phantom power on? I look down to see. Sure? sh**! R O F L! it was off! I hit the button, and, guess what! Boom! There went my mike at full blast and almost gave me a heart attack! I, feel! like, such? a moron! Has anyone ever done something r'r'r'real! stupid like that? Chris.

I hardly think you're alone here, we've all done that sort of thing. It's like those old Maytag washing machine commercials where the lonely repair man finally gets a call and rushes over, only to find that the customer didn't have the machine plugged in. Yup, its basically a right of passage...well a right of passage isn't ture either, because it's a mistake you'll probably make again sometime but maybe in a slightly diffferent way...I know I have! After a fright like that you'll probably remember to turn your volume down every time you try something different to get things working though! -- From: "Poppa Bear" Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 5:18 PM To: Subject: Re: Just! when you think no one! can be stupider... Re: Just! when you think no one! can be stupider...
Yes happend a few times to me as well and not only in a recording environment, believe me it's even worse at a live show with the band on stage, everybody looking at you, expecting something, you get your assistant engineer and techies to troubleshoot every possible cable and connection, then boom the little phantom button and everyone laughs. Another favourite when working on a analog desk is equalizing the heck out of a track thinking you're doing something, after a while wondering damm why is this EQ so uneffective and then realising the EQ button on the channel is switched out. You might think this only happens to rookies because they EQ and think they here changes but I've seen it happen to the best of the best most experienced sound guys and eventually after a few attempts you only realise something's wrong and the button is out.
Re: Just! when you think no one! can be stupider...
That's funny about the EQ, I have spent 15 minutes applying plugins to find out that I was on the wrong track channel and none of the plugins were even affecting the track I was targeting. - Original Message - From: Nickus de Vos To: ptaccess@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 2:04 PM Subject: Re: Just! when you think no one! can be stupider...
