Re: Avid S3 or C24 control surface?

2015-10-29 Thread Jed Barton
hey guys, so can you tell me a bit about the s3? I am going to be
getting protools, and this is my biggest deciding factor.
What i will be doing with protools, some radio production, and some
basic music mixing. In my past with digital editing, i've always found
it really useful to have a scrub wheel. Obviously i need a somewhat
good control surface, but can't afford 5 grand to get it. Any middle of
the road solutions that will cover a lot of the basics such as editing,
faiders and all that?

Will this s3 do the job?

Slau, I think you will be very pleased by what you see and hear about the S3

Hi Katie,

I know of no blind users with an s3 yet. To be certain, the C|24 is fully
supported and is very accessible but undoubtedly much further along in its
life cycle. It's clearly still supported and will probably be supported for
a few more years but I'd say that 5 years is perhaps pushing it a bit. I'm
not sure. In addition, the s3 is half the price but, as you pointed out,
doesn't necessarily have all of the same features that come in so handy with
the C|24. I'll be at AES this week and will have a chance to take a closer
look at the S3 and, since I have a C|24, might be able to compare/contrast
the two. I'll see if I can paint a fuller picture by next week.

I haven't emailed this list in a long time, but I have a question about

the C24 at the studio many times, so I'm very familiar with using that

I know Rick told me if I get the C24, I would have to purchase a separate

The S3 costs $5,000. The Artist series is considerably less expensive and you
might want to check that out. There's at least one person using it and loves it.

2015-10-29 Thread Sean A. Cummins
Hi Slau,

Yes, you are correct. I have integrated several of the SSL Nucleus for
clients, but the S3 is my newest recommendation for the systems I'm
integrating. The SSL's also utilize the EuCon protocol, so this is the
direction I am guiding my client to pursue for future development of the
Surface Reader.

The one think folks need to understand, is that the S3 is really strictly a
DAW control surface that can also be used on a local area network. This
meaning that it can be used in a digital audio/video over Ethernet editing
post production house.

There are limited audio ins and out on the S3, so the need for an I/O and
preamp will be necessary for those looking to do multi track recording at
one time. Though I personally choose to pick the I/O and preamps to my
liking, and don't want to go with "on board" preamps; there is, something to
be said for an all-in-one solution.

oh cool, do you have a model number for that? artist series, right?

Hi Jed,

The S3 costs $5,000. The Artist series is considerably less expensive and you
might want to check that out. There's at least one person using it and loves it.

hey guys, so can you tell me a bit about the s3? I am going to be getting

What i will be doing with protools, some radio production, and some basic music
mixing. In my past with digital editing, i've always found it really useful to
have a scrub wheel. Obviously i need a somewhat good control surface, but
can't afford 5 grand to get it. Any middle of the road solutions that will
cover a lot of the basics such as editing, faiders and all that?
Will this s3 do the job?

Hi Slau and Katie,

I have the S3, and the performance with Pro Tools 12 is very tight, and

which provides an incredible amount of options for controlling Pro Tools.
Coincidentally, this weekend, I am starting the training with a client on
his workstation my company had configured using the S3 and MC Transport with
Pro Tools 12.

For years I have been recommending and using several differing control
surfaces with VR clients that my company serve, and I firmly believe this is
the future for all DAW programs with regard to the use of EuCon protocol.
Hopefully, EuCon will provide a protocol that will allow for people such as
Tim Burgess, to refine his Surface Reader that can one day support a
comprehensive solution. This will enable us to work more directly with the
DAW software, and eliminate the loss of access when scripts, operating
systems and DAW software shifts direction. Standardizing a communication
platform between software and devices, will enable speech output to provide
clear and succinct verbalization that can even be customized by the
individual user.

Slau, I think you will be very pleased by what you see and hear about the S3
at AES. Talk with the Avid folks about EuCon, and where it's heading. And
by the way, Unbeknownst to most, EuCon has been implemented in most all of
the major DAW software's; even going back as far as Sonar Producer 8.

Take Care,

Best,

Slau

I haven't emailed this list in a long time, but I have a question about

control surfaces. I'm currently working at Rick Boggs' studio Audio Eyes
part-time as an audio engineer. We do postproduction work producing video
description. I'll be going full time by next year and will be getting my own
digital audio workstation so I can work remotely from home or at the studio.
I reopened my case with DOR in California, and they will be purchasing this
system for me. I was planning to get the C24 control surface since that's
what we have at the studio, and I'm really familiar with this board. But I
was browsing on Google a couple weeks ago and last night too. I found
information about another control surface made by Avid. I think it was
introduced earlier this year or last year. Its called the Avid S3 control
surface. Have any of you guys used this before, and do you know if this is
accessible with Voiceover? I've never seen the S3 control surface. I've used
the C24 at the studio many times, so I'm very familiar with using that
board.

I know Rick told me if I get the C24, I would have to purchase a separate

desk for the console. I know the S3 is a much smaller control surface
compared to the C24, but I wasn't sure which one would be the best option
for me to use with ProTools. Does the S3 come with its own desk, or
