Re: going to the mac world

2012-11-22 Thread Chris Norman
Hi,
For a kick off, do you mean iMac? If you really do have an IBM machine, which
you're looking to put some kind of Hacintosh thing on, I'm not even sure Pro
Tools will run.

Other than that, Pro Tools 9 is the best bet if you want to edit your own
plugins. If you don't mind just using presets, PT 10 is great, though neither
system works amazingly with 10.8, so you're probably best sticking with 10.7
Lion for your production machine.

In short, any plugin which is an RTAS plugin will work with VoiceOver, so if
you're buying extra plugins, ensure they can be ran as RTAS, not the new AAX
format, as the parameters of these fine new plugins aren't visible with
VoiceOver.

HTH,

Take care,
Chris Norman

As far as I know, you need at least ProTools 9.01 if you're going to use Lion

Re: going to the mac world

2012-11-22 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. A Hackintosh approach is not advisable for many reasons... You
don't get all of the voiceover functionality when booting from the OSX
dvd and this will leave you stuck if you need to run anything from the
dvd EG;if you need to reinstall the OS among other things.

Apple has tight control on all of the hardware in their machines. this
is one reason why OSX and pro tools is the industry standard in
commercial studios and academic environments etc. I'd bet money that
you will have issues going down the Hackintosh route...

Finally, you would not get any support from Apple or Avid as OSX is
only meant to be ran on an Apple macintosh computer.

Still, if you must do this, then any version of pro tools from 8.04
onwards will run under OSX 10.6 or 10.7. for now, there are some
issues with Voiceover in 10.8 Mountain Lion which prevent certain
things in pro tools from being accessible with Voiceover. This is
frustrating, but, there may be a fix in the works. Until one is
actually available, do not go with 10.8 Mountain Lion.

For now, you'd be in a much better spot even picking up an upgraded
older Macintosh that is OSX 10.6 friendly. A lot of studios still use
G5 Macs and they get the job done...

The new mac mini and lower end iMac are great choices as well and they
aren't very expensive.

Cameron.

plugins. If you don't mind just using presets, PT 10 is great, though
neither system works amazingly with 10.8, so you're probably best sticking
with 10.7 Lion for your production machine.

In short, any plugin which is an RTAS plugin will work with VoiceOver, so if
you're buying extra plugins, ensure they can be ran as RTAS, not the new AAX
format, as the parameters of these fine new plugins aren't visible with
VoiceOver.

HTH,

Take care,

Re: going to the mac world

2012-11-24 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. The new mac minis are fine for pro tools and garage band. You can
get one with a 2.3gHz quad core processor, four gigs of ram,
thunderbolt etc for $799. They also have a cheaper model with a 500 gb
hard drive and a dual core I5 processor for $599. Also, they both have
a built in SD card reader, yfi, ethernet, blutooth, USB 3.0 ports, and
a firewire port etc.

Of course you want to use a second hard drive for an audio drive, but,
that's the case with any audio computer...

The mac mini server version would be my top choice as it has two
internal 1tb drives, but, that is a thousand dollars. Once you get to
a grand, you're also in the ballpark to get an iMac or a mac book pro.

The mac minis are quiet, very lite and portable, and it's easy to add
up to sixteen gigs of ram to them. also, you don't need to have a
monitor hooked up to use one.

A mac book pro is something to consider, but, it really depends on
what sort of audio work you'll be doing...

An iMac would be my first suggestion if you can spend a little more,
or, if you can find a second hand one with good specs. If you were in
the US or Canada, I could easily find you a bunch of second hand macs
that would work for audio production. However, being that you're in
Egypt, all I can do is give you general suggestions...

Cameron.
