The Clarett series has an iOS app that was quite usable and Focusrite support
remotes into my system and help set up some stuff as well. I don’t know if
the red series of interfaces use the Focusrite control software or iOS app like
the scarlet and clarets range does. Probably a good question to direct to
Focusrite Support.

Re: recommendations for control surfaces and audio interfaces

2018-09-15 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Katie,

Not much has changed on the control surface front, although since last time,
the C24 has certainly entered end of life cycle, meaning that it will no longer
be sold. Historically,, end-of-life products tend to officially be supported
for for 5 years after the end of life but we've seen products still work with
the latest version of Pro Tools beyond that 5 year point. That said, I wouldn't
necessarily recommend the C24 at this point unless you can get it at a really
low price and, by that, I mean less than the S3. I have not personally used the
Dock but will make it a point to test it. To me, the S3 is the most promising
surface in conjunction with the dock for transport and scrub control. What
remains to be seen is whether the Dock will work without an iPad but in
conjunction with the S3. There's some doubt about that so I'll have to inquire.

On the interface front, I can't comment on the Focusrite accessibility as there
have been mixed reports about that as well. If you're using HD hardware, it's
not a problem at all because Pro Tools sees the Red as an Avid interface. It's
when you use it outside of HDX hardware that it's uncertain. There's no doubt
that you'll be able to use the interface for straight-forward basic
applications but, beyond Pro Tools, you might not have access to stand-alone
settings like sample conversion, soft limiting, buffer sizes, etc. outside of
the Pro Tools environment. Unless you're using other software, it probably
won't be an issue at all.

Hope that helps for now. Best,
Slau

Re: recommendations for control surfaces and audio interfaces

2018-09-14 Thread Steve Martin
I can’t speak to the C24 or surfaces in general since I have never used Pro
Tools with one, and haven’t used pro tools much in the last few years. However
I’d say go with the red 4 over the Omni, its more modern and has gotten some
great reviews. I owned a Clarrett once and its was very nice, and the red
series is supposed to be the next step up from those.

2018-09-14 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Steve. I think someone accidentally replied to my subject line yesterday.
Just wondering if you received my message? I know Avid discontinued selling the
C24 at the end of last year. I looked at Avid's end of life dates page and they
said the final date for selling this board was December 31. Are there any
control surfaces you would recommend now that are accessible with ProTools and
voiceover? I was thinking about getting the avid HD Omni audio interface, but I
read about the Focusrite Red4 Pre earlier this week. I think it's cheaper than
the Avid one and wasn't sure which interface would be the best option.
Hopefully other people can reply and chime in with control surface
recommendations as well.
Thanks.

Hi list members, I'd like to know what operating system and what version of pro
tools should work with the mac laptop that has 6 coars and also what size hard
drive should be used? i'm trying to get the best suggestions possible because
I have an old project mix also I'm looking for something that will support an I
7 processor. Is all of this possible considering that I need this to be
portable?

recommendations for control surfaces and audio interfaces

2018-09-13 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi Slau and everyone it’s Katie. I don’t know why, but Edgar’s name keeps
appearing when I tried typing in the PT access address.

Anyway, it’s been a while since I have emailed the list about control surfaces
and I would like to get some recommendations on which ones are accessible with
ProTools. I am still working at Rick’s studio, Audio Eyes in California. We do
postproduction work producing audio description projects. Since I don’t have a
workstation set up at home yet, I have been working at the studio. During the
past 4 months this year we have gotten extremely busy with producing more
projects for different clients, and there might not always be a workstation
available for me to use at the studio. So I will need a system to work on
projects from home. I’m planning to get a ProTools Ultimate system, I think
Avid formerly called this ProTools HD.

A few years ago, I was deciding on either getting the Avid S3 or the C24
control surface for my workstation. I know Avid discontinued selling the C24
last year, so I was wondering what your recommendations would be now for a good
accessible control surface? I heard from people on this list the Avid S3 and
Fader Port surfaces are accessible, but I am not familiar with these boards and
haven’t gotten my hands on them to test out. Has anyone used the iPad dock with
PT and is it accessible? I know the Artist Transport has been discontinued, so
I will need something that can help me edit audio quickly and do transport
functions. I'm looking for a control surface that has a jog/shuttle wheel for
editing audio efficiently, preferably connects via ethernet and has motorized
faders. I will be recording voiceovers, editing audio and mixing in stereo as
well as 5.1 surround. Are there other control surfaces that I haven’t listed
which are accessible?

Also, I was planning to get the Avid HD Omni for an audio interface, but I
recently went on Sweetwater to read about the Red4Pre from Focusrite. My boss
told me they had recently upgraded their audio interface from Avid to
FocusRite. Just wondering which interface would be a better option to have for
my system, the HD Omni or the Red4 Pre?
Thanks for your advice and any suggestions.
Katie
