Actualy, this is not much different to what Ruby gems are doing when the have a native part or native bindings. I build debs for passenger based upon the brightbox PPA dsc file. I refuse to compile by hand on production. I'm not saying its a good thing, but I've created an rpm for passenger, which compiles the apache modules in the post installation scripts. all of the required packages for building it are part of the rpm package requirements...
