[pydotorg-www] Wiki page deletions
Hi everyone, I've noticed that recently we had a couple of wiki page deletions. I'd like to remind everyone that deleting pages on the wiki will result in external (and internal) links to break, so it's usually better to keep the page, but add text to it, pointing the reader to the new location or alternative content. By deleting a page, you also delete the history and any other traces of the page showing how it came to be. Part of the wiki culture is to preserve such history, but this isn't possible when you delete a page. Example: https://wiki.python.org/moin/FiscalSponsorship was delete a few days ago. You can still see the content here: https://web.archive.org/web/20221001110336/https://wiki.python.org/moin/FiscalSponsorship There are references to the page, which have not been updated: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonSoftwareFoundation#PSF_Fiscal_Sponsorship My guess is that the PSF stopped accepting fiscal sponsorship requests (see https://www.python.org/psf/fiscal-sponsorees/) and that's why the page was removed, but this is not really the right way to go about this. Much better is to add a note to the wiki page. I'll fix the above and add a note now. Re: [pydotorg-www] Python on Android wiki page
To add to what Mats already mentioned: There are currently at least three efforts for getting better Python support on mobiles: - PyScript which runs Python in a browser, so you can use a web view to host it inside an application. This does run some data science code, but I'm not sure how far you can get with it. - BeeWare, which aims to support multiple platforms running Python with the same code, including mobiles. - Kivy, which has a similar goal to BeeWare, but is more focused on graphics heavy apps. I don't think any of these natively integrate into an existing Java app, though. Work on Jython 3 is progressing very slowly. You may want to help out here: https://github.com/jython/jython/tree/main On 17.08.2023 16:35, Dmitry Kazakov wrote: Thank you, Mats. If you do add Jython, perhaps include a note about its status. This is a well known implementation mentioned elsewhere on the Python wiki, but the project... how to put this politely - "isn't getting a lot of love". It's not "dead", that would be too harsh, releases are still being made. Most of the Python community considers Python 2 a dead language; Jython does not run the current Python language specification, called Python 3 (which has been out for 15 years now). There is a project in existence to make this happen, which includes a substantial revamp of Jython, but there's no public indication that it's making any real progress. The current, possibly outdated, comment inthe FAQ in Jython's own wiki (which is hosted by python.org <http://python.org>) might be instructive: https://wiki.python.org/jython/JythonFaq/GeneralInfo#Can_I_use_Jython_to_make_apps_for_mobile_phones.3F <https://wiki.python.org/jython/JythonFaq/GeneralInfo#Can_I_use_Jython_to_make_apps_for_mobile_phones.3F> The python wiki is also discouraging (remember, on wikis, somebody has to update information, and for statements of this type, it's hard to tell if up to date or not): "Although Android's primary programming language is Java, there is no known port of Jython to the platform. [pydotorg-www] Main conference listing: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonConferences
After moving the conference listings from the python.org page to the wiki, as discussed, I have now completed the initial round of conference additions and URL reviews on the wiki page: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonConferences If you find additional conferences / events, please add them to this page. We should also check the URLs every now and then, since conferences tend to go inactive sometimes, or change their main URLs. I'm not sure what to do about the pycon.org listing. For now, I have added a notice to the python.org page that it's just a subset of available conferences: https://www.python.org/community/workshops/ It may be good to add a link to the wiki page on pycon.org as well, as it's much easier keeping the wiki page up to date than pycon.org. If not, then I would > definitely be in favour of going wiki there. The wiki uses a different style than python.org <http://python.org>, but IMO that's fine, since it focuses on providing information, where styling is secondary - similar to the PEP or docs pages we have for Python. We may want to enhance the wiki layout a bit to be more mobile friendly, but that's a different topic. I'd keep the "workshops" page to not disrupt existing links, but have it redirect people to the wiki page for the complete listing. We can then also put more effort into adding most Python conferences to the wiki page. I'm not sure what to do about the pycon.org <http://pycon.org> page. It's listing is not well structured and much harder to edit (only works via PRs and there's no ML to discuss changes, only a tracker). Perhaps adding a link to the wiki page for the full listing would help, but it's not ideal. -- Marc-Andre Lemburg eGenix.com Professional Python Services directly from the Experts (#1, Apr 25 2023) >>> Python Projects, Coaching and Support ... https://www.egenix.com/ >>> Python Product Development ... https://consulting.egenix.com/ ________ ::: We implement business ideas - efficiently in both time and costs ::: eGenix.com Software, Skills and Services GmbH Pastor-Loeh-Str.48 D-40764 Langenfeld, Germany. Perhaps we ought to retire the "workshops" page on python.org, move everything over to the wiki and instead have the python.org page link or redirect to the wiki page. Thoughts ? Would that be a step backwards visually? If not, then I would definitely be in favour of going wiki there. The wiki uses a different style than python.org, but IMO that's fine, since it focuses on providing information, where styling is secondary - similar to the PEP or docs pages we have for Python. I'm not sure what to do about the pycon.org page. It's listing is not well structured and much harder to edit (only works via PRs and there's no ML to discuss changes, only a tracker). Perhaps adding a link to the wiki page for the full listing would help, but it's not ideal. -- Marc-Andre Lemburg eGenix.com Professional Python Services directly from the Experts (#1, Apr 25 2023) >>> Python Projects, Coaching and Support ...https://www.egenix.com/ >>> Python Product Development ...https://consulting.egenix.com/ ::: We implement business ideas - efficiently in both time and costs ::: eGenix.com Software, Skills and Services GmbH Pastor-Loeh-Str.48 D-40764 Langenfeld, Germany. Re: [pydotorg-www] Request for addition of "PyDelhi Conference" in events' list
The instructions may be older, but are not outdated :-) There are a few people on this list who can edit pages on python.org (using its custom CMS), e.g. I have editing rights. I can also help with adding events to the calendars, since I still am on that team as well (having started it many years ago). Now, whether the "workshops" page is the best resource for conference links is another question. Unfortunately, there are several such link collections and because they live on different platforms, none of them are fully up to date. Ideally, we should just have one platform for this. My take on this is to make editing such a list easy for more than just a few people, so the wiki page would be the natural choice: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonConferences Another such listings is the one on https://pycon.org/ (which lives in a Github repo), and there are several spread across various other sites on the net. Thoughts? I think we ought to move all Packt book entries to a separate sub-page, e.g. AdvancedBooks/Packt, and point there from the main page. The wiki is not meant to be a SEO resource and dumping their entire Python book catalog into the wiki not fulfilling the purpose of the pages we have. Given the number of books, it may even be better to simply put a single link to their catalog on the page, rather than list every single book. -- Marc-Andre Lemburg eGenix.com Professional Python Services directly from the Experts (#1, Apr 18 2022) >>> Python Projects, Coaching and Support ...https://www.egenix.com/ >>> Python Product Development ...https://consulting.egenix.com/ ::: We implement business ideas - efficiently in both time and costs ::: eGenix.com Software, Skills and Services GmbH Pastor-Loeh-Str.48 D-40764 Langenfeld, Germany. Re: [pydotorg-www] reference to optimizer.html?
Hi Skip, the https://github.com/python/pythondotorg repo is for the current version of the website. I have lost track of where the content of the legacy website is hosted. It may be coming from this subversion repo: https://svn.python.org/www/trunk/pydotorg/ The repo was not ported to GitHub, AFAIK. If so, we'd somehow need to get the change applied there. Not sure, whether that's possible anymore, though. I also don't know what we'd need to trigger to get any such change up on the legacy website. In the past, there was a cronjob taking care of this, but that's really long ago. Hi Gerard, thanks for the note. I'll try to get more information from our Windows expert on this: Steve Dower.
