Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-psc] Unscheduled 3.18.1 release?
hi Nyall thanks for rising this. indeed they are pretty serious issues. I'd be +1 for releasing sooner than planned but I d like to have Jürgen answer this definitively. I also agree about warning for LAS Files. Add the following to the list of serious issue: - raster URIs using /vsi{zip,curl,etc.}/ won't load anymore: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/41888 (fix PR open) +1 to have an early .1 release. [QGIS-Developer] Unscheduled 3.18.1 release?
So. 3.18.0 is unfortunately proving to be a bit of a dud, with numerous critical issues including: - georeferencer is broken: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/41770 (fixed now) - a crash in the layer properties for point cloud layers: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/41722 (fixed now) - Can't access rasters in geopackage through browser: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/41860 (fixed now) - Crash when exporting DXF files: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/41858 -- unfixed - A crash when opening the properties of a raster layer: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/41834 (possibly a plugin issue, but more feedback is needed as it may be a widespread non-plugin issue (this code was changed just prior to release)) I think the severity of the georefencer and DXF crashes alone should warrant a speedy .1 release, given that they completely break some core GIS functionality. (I think we should also consider raising a user-friendly warning message when a user tries to add a las or laz file and they don't have a pdal enabled build, as we are seeing lots of confusion about this situation too). What's everyone's thoughts? Should we cut an unscheduled 3.18.1 release sometime next week after the DXF and raster properties crashes are fixed? [QGIS-Developer] PIP for plugins - Request for comments (QGIS grants)
Dear List, I am planning to apply for the QGIS Grants with a proposal to support PIP dependencies for QGIS plugins. The goal is to solve the difficulty for a QGIS plugin to depend on an existing python library. This results in QGIS plugins missing a lot of the great features offered by the many existing python libraries, or in trouble for users when using some plugins. The proposal is described in more details in this QEP : https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/202 In two words : - pip dependencies could be declared by plugins (to be determined if in metadata.txt or in requirements.txt, if you have a preference please comment on the QEP) - upon installation, user would be asked if he/she wants to install them - dependencies would be installed in a per-profile virtual environment, allowing to keep profiles isolated - a new tab in the plugin manager would show the currently installed dependencies, and highlight potential conflicts if any. I'd love to hear your ideas/opinions/comments so I can improve the proposal before submitting it (ideally on the QEP directly). Hi Nyall, do you mean only WMS or do you mean all (tiled) services available in the qgswmsprovider.cpp? So actually disable Capability::Prefetch for the wmsprovider? https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/src/providers/wms/qgswmsprovider.cpp#L2018 Or were you only agreeing with WMS? Because the real world cases are the ones like OpenStreetMap (who is already 'fixed' by Ale), but also in The Netherland where we have/had 'free' WMST services for Aerials and Topo (and several other services), but because of the super heavy load of these free services, they start to go away from the 'free' and want you to pay for a number of requests. Besides this: (tile) resources do not come for free, they cost bandwidth/energy/computer power etc etc As said, I haven't checked WMTS precisely (I did for WMS) but try: https://geodata.nationaalgeoregister.nl/wmts?VERSION=1.0.0&request=GetCapabilities and open the layer 'opentopo'. For my mapcanvas of 1000x1000 pixels (theoretically 4x4=16 tiles of 256x256pixels, but say 6x6=36). If I zoom in I fire a >176 requests. I would be Ok to have no prefetching at all for services, just to save the earth a little :-) I agree that 'polluting' the interface with options is a good argument. An option then would be to make it a hidden/advanced setting, which I can disable (or others have to enable... how user/environmental friendly do we want to be).
