Re: [QGIS-Developer] Changelog Time for 3.22

2021-10-04 Thread Frank Sokolic

Hi changelog contributors,

I've been reading through the changelog entries, checking grammar and
readability, and noticed that many entries refer to PR. Given that the
target audience of the changelog is more than just developers /
contributors, would anybody be unhappy if I changed PR to something like
"feature" or "function"? So an entry that currently reads "This PR
allows users to ..." would change to "This feature allows users to ...".

Regards, Frank.

2020-05-25 Thread Frank Sokolic

Hi Tim,

I've had a look through the changelog and have allocated each entry to a
category. Authors might want to check that their entries are allocated
correctly as I might have classified some of them incorrectly. I've also
replaced "PR" with words like "update", "feature" or "change" and have
removed references to github and QEP where I came across them.

Hi Tim,

I think I prefer these images IN the export. Then at least the 'old' way
will just work.

If that is in place I can have a further look at using for example

https://github.com/sphinx-contrib/images

Or if that fails (as it does now with me), then I can have a look at
generating thumbnails myself and add some ::target to them to the real
image or so

I also tested current export, and besides the usual little hick-ups
(because of content of the items) there are some new bigger ones, of
which I created issues:

https://github.com/kartoza/prj.app/issues/1186
https://github.com/kartoza/prj.app/issues/1187
https://github.com/kartoza/prj.app/issues/1188

Ah great, thanks for filing those. @anita can you take a look through

@Frank last release you were wanting to help out with the changelog -

@Richard for now I think I will manually just move the images into the

While I like the live preview of option B, I find this option difficult
to use when georeferencing the raw image against a raster dataset such
as an aerial photograph. The top raster in the drawing order, e.g. the

GCPs. In this case I find the current dual window approach is better as
the images can be placed side-by-side for easier identification of GCPs.

Yeah this case when georeferencing aerial imagery on top of other
aerial imagery is a valid concern. This could be possibly addressed by
having a switch (with a keyboard shortcut) that would toggle opacity
of the georeferenced layer to 0% and 100% (or some other values).

Another option would be to have an action to open a new map canvas
dock widget containing just the georeferenced layer (with live warp as
well) that could be either docked on the side of QGIS main window or
even moved to a second display. Closing this map canvas dock widget
would make the georeferenced layer appear again in the main map
canvas...

What do you think? In this way, with single canvas by default and with
optional "pop out" georeferencing canvas we could probably address the
issue nicely.

I like the option of a switch and keyboard shortcut. I think that
programmatically it would be much easier to implement than having a dock
widget. It is currently possible to assign shortcuts to the *Show
Selected Layers* and *Hide Selected Layers* commands but these have to
be different key combinations. It would be nice to have the same
shortcut toggling the selected layer on/off.

practical to have the georeferenced image in a dock widget in the main
window - and all georeferencer related map tools included in the main
QGIS window as well. (Or maybe the other way around - to keep
georeferencer as a separate window, but allow the main map canvas to
be embedded in it?)

I would personally prefer the second option. I think a significant
amount of users doing regular georeferencing would have dual screen
setups (or large screens) and would appreciate having the a larger
georeferencer window then a dock would allow.

I have been thinking about this and what are the pros and cons of
having a separate window for georeferencing vs doing georeferencing in
main map canvas. Actually rather than discussing whether to have one
or two windows, the key bit to decide on is something else - what
would be the coordinate system of the georeferencer canvas:

A. image coordinates - that is what we have in QGIS georeferencer now:
the image gets loaded without any distortion and stays that way all
the time. Picking of map coordinates for GCPs has to be done in a
separate map canvas. (i.e. one click in "georeferencer canvas", and
one click in "reference map canvas")

B. map coordinates - that is what ArcGIS does. The image is placed at
some initial position in the map, picking of image coordinates and map
coordinates for GCPs is done in the same map canvas. (i.e. two clicks
in single map canvas)

The option B has the advantage that it is quite easy/intuitive to have
live preview of the image transformation as GCPs are being added. With
option A the live preview of the transform is not really possible (we

the images can be placed side-by-side for easier identification of GCPs.

So where I am hesitating is whether to stick to option A which is
probably familiar to QGIS users - or with option B that may provide
better UX thanks to the live update of the warped raster (or vector).
I guess we will need to choose one or the other - supporting both
options would be probably too confusing. I am trying to figure out
which way to take, because this will also have great impact on the
workflow on how GCPs would be picked on the map(s) using map tools...

Thanks for your thoughts :-)

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Get rid of 'Manage Layers Toolbar', or not?

2019-03-17 Thread Frank Sokolic

Hi Richard,

I wouldn't like the 'Manage Layers Toolbar' to be removed just yet. I
use the 'Spreadsheet layers' plugin a lot and this plugin places an icon
on the Manage Layers toolbar. This is very convenient as it means the
plugin can be accessed with one click. If the Manage Layers toolbar were
removed then users would have to access the plugin through the menu bar
(Layer > Add Layer > Add spreadsheet layer) which is slightly less
convenient.

Perhaps the authors of the plugin, Camptocamp, need to be involved in
this discussion?

Hi all,

Following on from this conversation:
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-developer/2017-July/049227.html

it seems we have issues in the qt5 builds under locales which use
commas as decimal separators. Under these locales entering a value
like "5,5" in a spin box (such as those used in the symbol layer
properties) , then moving focus away from the widget, will discard the
changes.

I know *nothing* about what's the expected behavior here, but a quick
google search leads me to believe that most software follow QGIS'
approach and require users to always use ".", regardless of the locale
(e.g. [1]). Is this correct?

It's a trivial change to make to get the spin boxes to accept the
local decimal separator, but this would prevent users entering "5.5"
in those locales.

Can someone from one of these affected regions let me know what the
correct behavior should be? I don't want to make the change if it
breaks entry of 5.5 and that's the standard used in those locales.

https://ux.stackexchange.com/questions/74369/is-a-decimal-comma-used-in-data-entry

Hi Nyall,

I'm in South Africa where the comma is the official decimal separator.
If I set my locale to South Africa ZAF (both on Ubuntu Linux and
Windows) then a comma is expected as the decimal separator. However, I
have met very few people in South Africa who actually use a comma, or
even know that it is our "official" decimal separator. Everyone uses a
decimal point.

This leads to problems in QGIS, however. I'm using QGIS Master on Ubuntu
17.04 set to locale ZAF and if, for example, I want to change a stroke
width in the Styling Dock then this is what happens:

- I initially see the default stroke width displayed as 0,26 Millimeter.

- If I change the value by using the spinner all is fine. One click up
and the value changes to 0,46.

- If I try type in a number such as 0,8 and push enter/tab the number is
automatically changed to Hairline.

- If, instead, I type in the number with a decimal point 0.8 the number
is accepted but the decimal point is automatically changed to a comma.

This is confusing, to say the least. The number has to be entered with a
point but is displayed with a comma. For me the ideal would be to use a
decimal point throughout and ditch the comma.

My feeling is that the standalone browser should be retired and not included in
version 3.0. I don't think it provides any functionality that isn't already

As an aside, how easy would it be to adapt the standalone browser code to serve

Subject: [Qgis-developer] Future of standalone browser?

Hi all,

Just wanted to raise the discussion about the future of the standalone
QGIS browser.

The current situation (as I see it)

- Ignoring a tiny change I made a couple of days ago (to make the
preview use a pan tool), the last commit to standalone browser
(besides general api fixes) was... adding a new icon in may 2015.

- The standalone browser is very limited. There's lots of
functionality available in the browser panel in the main app which
isn't available in the standalone browser, like the search filter and
everything in the right click context menus.

- The current state of the standalone browser is "schizophrenic" at
best. It's predominantly a read-only display of data, but with some
extra random functionality in a toolbar (add wms server (what about
wfs/wcs/etc?), create shapefile (what about spatialite/geopackage?),
set layer projection)

- The UI is very unpolished - eg there's a "header" header over the
browser tree (http://mappinggis.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/5.png)

I'm guessing, given this, that there's not a lot of demand for the
standalone browser. This may either be due to lack of interest in this
functionality in general, or else just a reflection of the current
limited functionality available in it.

So what should we do with the standalone browser in 3.0 and future? is
there a future here, or should we just drop this functionality and
save ourselves the maintenance burden? And if there IS interest in
keeping the browser around, is anyone able to step up and sponsor some
investment into making browser more useful and polished?

Hi Frank

I was notified about a similar problem yesterday. Are you able to tell
when the last "good" state of code was?

Just in case, I had similar troubles in an unrelated Qt app recently. In
that case I had the feeling that it was triggered by a browser (chrome)
running at the same time some expensive javascript operations.
This might give a possible lead or be just some random misinterpretation
from my side.

When I open the attribute table, I see that fields 1 2 have names
SALnum and SALnam, but the rest are called 'Field_3', 'Field_4' and so on.

When I edit record 1 of this CSV file to look like:
SALnum,SALnam,1p,2p,3p,4p,5p,6p,7p,8p,9p,10+p

The I get the correct field names (albeit 1p instead of just 1)

Is this an error, or is there some reason further down the line, that
attribute tables cannot have 'numeric' field names?

Re: [Qgis-developer] Bug in rendering Rasters in QGIS 2.4 2.6 and 2.8 in Windows

I can confirm this behaviour. I am getting it when displaying a
georeferenced jpg using QGIS 2.8.1 64 bit (standalone installer) running
on Windows 8.1.

When zooming in or out the raster image sometimes doesn't display. I've
tried it with OTF both on and off and the bug still occurs.

I've also tried changing the rendering behaviour in the Options
Rendering dialogue. The bug occurs irrespective of whether User render
caching and Render layers in parallel are on or off.

random that I was forced to recommend 2.2 to all the users who are supported
by my team.

It is not possible to use raster images for interpretation as the images do
not appear when we zooming or panning. I have placed a video where I have
compared the behaviour in 2.8 vs 2.2. A raster and a vector are shown. You
will be able to see that the raster disappears randomly and does not redraw
even if we pan or zoom. It reappears randomly.

I tested this in Macbook Pro with Qgis2.6 and I did not see this problem so
it might be only seen in windows systems.

I hope this will be looked into at the earliest.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Regarding having multiple layers in print composer QGIS

2015-03-20 Thread Frank Sokolic

Hi Nancy,

Instead of labelling the polygons with the values of a single field you
can use multiple fields by building an expression using the expression
builder. In the Layer Label Settings dialogue you'll see the button for
the expression builder next to the box where you choose the field.

If you have two fields, one called ID and the other NAME, then you can
build an expression like:

 ID  || ' ' ||  NAME

If you would like these to appear on different lines then you can set
the label to wrap on a character, e.g. an asterisk *, and then write
your expression as:

 ID  || '*' ||  NAME

You can also insert your own text into the labels like this:

'ID: ' || ID  || '*Name: ' ||  NAME

Hope that helps.

Frank.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Projection widget improvement

2011-11-19 Thread Frank Sokolic
Hi All,

I find that the internal projection ID is important when working with User
Defined Coordinate Systems. In these cases there is no Authority ID and being
able to see the internal projection ID is necessary when moving QGIS projects
between different computers. User defined coordinate systems are not always
defined in the same order on different computers, resulting in the same user
defined system having different IDs on different computers.

When loading projects QGIS seems to match up user defined systems by ID and not
the name, which causes problems when moving projects between computers. In
these cases it is important to see the IDs in order to match up the user
defined systems when opening a project on another computer.

Example: Computer 1 has a user defined system called Lo31 with an internal ID
of 1 and a system called Lo33 with an ID of 10001. Computer 2 also has user
defined systems of Lo31 and Lo33 but these have IDs of 10001 and 1,
respectively (because they have been defined in a different order to computer
1). If a project using Lo31 is moved from computer 1 to computer 2, QGIS on
computer 2 assigns the project a CRS of Lo33, which is wrong.

Frank.

Hi all.
I think the projection widget should be improved, by having the search
filtering the projections rather than moving to the next matching (as it
happens e.g. in the plugin list). Also, it would be good to have the
search working in both fields (people often overlook the search field
selector). Finally, the internal projection ID could be hidden (I do not
see any use of it for the user).
If agreed, it's a trivial change.
All the best.
