Thanks for these information.
As I need to review 2.5D render, I will also look at this improvement
and do a feedback.

Thanks a lot

Indexing a whole layer for editing seems a no-go. We should maybe have a
way to get the user to use the indexing tools only when zoomed in ?

Coming back to this old thread - the issue was reported in #12578 -
and it should be fixed now in master. There should not be a long pause
nor high memory usage for big layers anymore - indexing is done on a
reasonably small area (which may be still much larger than your
current extent - so it is not necessary to re-index after every
zoom/pan). Let me know if you still encounter some problems or have
some new problems due to the changes.

2015-08-14 Thread Rémi Bovard
Hello,

I was confronted to the same issue and was wondering why this message
appeared. Thanks to Denis, I now understand the reason.

I tried to disable snapping, save the project and restart QGIS, this
behaviour is still present when I want to insert a new feature. Can somebody
else confirm that?

Thanks.

You're right, I feel edition with snapping much smoother than old editing
session.

I am not experiencing such freeze. With a project with ~100 layers, with
10 having more than 10k features, I have something around 2 to 3 seconds.

I beleive this is reasonable.

Could we imagine to do the indexing in background ?
Indexing is started when an editing map tools (or I believe any snapping
operation) is enabled.
Since it is required on mouse events, it needs to freeze the app in the
mean time.

And maybe indexing only what is currently in the user's extent, if this
is not what is currently done ?
Would be an idea, although I am not sure this is really required. Nobody
complained very much yet about this.

Martin would have to answer for saying if it's feasible or not.

I made a new try but couldn't see any progress bar, the only thing is
the cursor in load mode and a message at the end in the bottom left

From what I read, you'll see the progress over several layers but not
