Re: [Qgis-user] Question

Thank you for replying.
I was working on a detailed map development of a certain state (Andhra
Pradesh)
in India. This would be useful in disaster management and would be
accessible by all.
Openstreetmap does not provide detailed features of the place that is why
wanted to check if someone has found a way to use google information.
Any leads in this regards are appreciated

I don't believe it's possible to get Google data. Which is one of the
reasons for the success of OSM.

For my curiosity, what Google data do you want that's not in OSM?

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4 macOS still doesn't install GRASS properly, ... 'sigh...'

2018-10-31 Per discussione Andreas Neumann

Hi Stace,

Sorry to hear about that. Can you remind me, when you tried to contact
me? I couldn't find any record of it.

Normally I am pretty responsive to such questions: even if we normally
don't do earmarked donations, we always try to help you find a developer
with the expertise to help fix issues.

We also have the QGIS grants program, where contributors can propose a
project that is funded from the general donations and sponsorships.
Improving installer and user experience on the MacOS platform could be
one such project.

Note that GRASS and QGIS are separate projects with their own, different
release schedules. It is normal that sometimes things break between this
too separate projects - not on purpose, but it happens. This is nothing
specific on the MacOS platform. It also happens on Windows and Linux.

About your general complaint that we tend to neglect the MacOS platform:
are you aware that we just recently did a fund raising initiative
targeted specifically to fixing issues on the MacOS platform? See
http://blog.qgis.org/2018/09/12/macosx-specific-bug-fixing-campaign/

About 30 people contributed a little more than 3000 € altogether. So
people do care about it - but to put in in perspective: one single ESRI
license probably costs more than what this campaign raised.
Nevertheless, it was nice to see that >30 people chipped in and it shows
that the QGIS.ORG project also cares about it. There are some nice
results from this initiative and we will soon blog about the results for
the campaign.

Greetings,

Andreas

I don't think anger and rage are in any way a way to change things.

Especially right after a release sprint with so much effort by so
much people.

Coming back to the real topic, MacOS really lacks funds to support
packaging. It is way more difficult to package and solve some
issues on MacOS. I have seen a lot of people working hard on
having it running correctly, and it is NOT easy.

If you have any fund or developpers available, please contribute
back.

Thanks

What operating system are you on and which installation method did you
use? It appears that your python installation is missing the requests
library. You will need to add this. Installation method will vary
depending the answer to my first question.

This is something we are working on. Please follow the emails from dev list:

We are hoping the write a QEP later this week and start the discussion with

If you are brave there is a link to an installer on the last email and you
can give it try. Your feedback is highly appreciated.

I don't think anger and rage are in any way a way to change things.

Especially right after a release sprint with so much effort by so much people.

Coming back to the real topic, MacOS really lacks funds to support packaging.
It is way more difficult to package and solve some issues on MacOS. I have seen
a lot of people working hard on having it running correctly, and it is NOT easy.
If you have any fund or developpers available, please contribute back.

Yes, I read the ReadMe and followed the instructions
Yes, I’ve added the ENV variables
Yes, I’ve scrubbed everything and done a clean install (several times)
Yes, I even tried the futile installation of the GRASS “required frameworks”
which seem to be the only solutions anyone is able to suggest on StackExchange.
Yes I tried installing GRASS on it’s own and pointing to it from the processing

Thanks again, Nyall.

Re. 'only look in geometry columns' - no, we're not using this setting, nor
have we ever. Is that true that pre-3.4 was using that setting? I would have
imagined this is the other way around? I will see if this fix addresses this
issue when it gets implemented.

Re. the schema display for dragging and dropping - still not a fan of this
feature - would prefer the QGIS browser window not be a DBA-type of GUI
(https://issues.qgis.org/issues/17719) but that's another issue altogether!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the clarification. Can you confirm whether you have the setting
"only look in the geometry_columns metadata table" switched on or off for your
connection?

If you're not using this setting, then it's possibly related to this fix
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/commit/e813fe880. Pre 3.4 QGIS was only looking in
the geometry columns table for the browser, and not respecting this setting.

That's intended -- for db connections we should be showing empty schemas in the
browser, as this allows users to drag and drop tables into these schemas to
initially populate them.

[Qgis-user] Shapefile geoprocessing dissolve

2018-10-31 Per discussione nwastra
Hi
I am very new to gis.
I have surface hydrology lines in a .gdb file some of which I want to add to
the OpenStreetMap.org .
In QGIS I select a manageable portion of it, copy features and paste as a new
vector layer and save as as shapefile.
The hydro lines are all in many small line segments and I want them joined for
each separately named watercourse, so I open the shapefile in QGIS > Select
Features by Value, in the box next to ‘Name' I select ‘Is not missing (not
null)’, and all the waterways with a name are selected, then I choose Vector >
Geoprocessing Tools > Dissolve, choose the selected features of the Input
layer, 'Name’ in Unique ID Fields, and save to a shapefile, and Run

This works fine and on opening the saved shapefile in QGIS, I can select any
stream and it has a name and the whole stream is selected instead of a small
section of the stream as at beginning.

But, when I open it in JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap editor) instead of the entire
stream being selected, only a small segment of the lines is selected which is
unexpected for me. I wish to use JOSM to merge individual steams into the OSM
as it preferred not to have to join all the segments in to one stream each time
for individual streams.

Am I missing step/s in the process? - maybe need to merge or join geometry too
at the dissolve?

Thanks
Nev

Re: [Qgis-user] Snapping points and lines in 3D

Hi,

Following your feedback I realize that the issue in its full extent is more
complicated, than I anticipated. However for a start a behaviour similar to the
snapping of nodes in linestrings would be far better than just ignoring the Z
value. You might argue that this isn't true snapping in 3D, but merely a
transfer of the Z value when points snap in the 2D plane. Nonetheless it is
what I and my users are looking for, and it would be a big improvement compared
to the current state of things!

Entering the Z value manually in the vertex editor is cumbersome, error prone
and not desirable at all! So if better work arounds exist, I'm all ears! :-)

Best regards,

Morten Storm

Hi,

much more than that in fact. The idea xould be to have interactive modifiers to
list all available features at a possible snapping location. Z snapping
tolerance would only be only here to help in not snapping a 2D point if the Z
value is too far away from the existing one (for instance).

The default Z value has been added as an answer to the fact that most providers
can't handle Null Z values, so that you can set it to if you want and
consider it is a no data information.

In the meantime, I realized that PostgGIS is totally able to store NaN values
for Z, M (even XY too). Shapefile definitely cannot.

Hi,

Do you mean something like Settings --> Options --> Digitizing -->
Default Z value?

This is the Z-related option I can remember for digitizing (not really
a snapping one though).

Hi Saber and Régis,

Thanks for your prompt replies! I am not trying to digitize in
3D view - but was merely hoping to snap in all 3 dimensions when doing ordinary
editing with snap to points containing this information. I understand that this
may be a bigger issue, than I originally anticipated - but I also think that I
(and the other users, I know) would prefer "unconditional" snapping to Z, if
the information is there and until the whole topic had been resolved.

Do you by any chance have a work around for this?

Best regards,

Morten Storm

Hi, It's not by chance, we have been working a lot to try to
make the digitizing maptools catch with the 3D API for geometries, because
before 2.18, it was just destroying Z and M values for all operations.

I think some use cases are still missing probably, and some are
not easy to solve by one default behavior, because choosing if you want to snap
Z value or not should be a user choice.

We have been discussing a lot about going towards some
interactive snapping widget to be able to choose which feature to grab, which
to snap to, use Z or not, use a Z snapping tolerance or not. It's a big topic!

Best regards

Hi Morten,

This is probably by chance that the line works! Have
you tried to move the point using the node tool?

Proper 3D digitizing from within the 3D map is in our
to-do list for future, but if you'd be interested in sponsoring the feature,
feel free to contact us.

Hi!
Try to open and save the project in 2.18 before 3.4. I think there are problems
to use too old versions of project files in 3.x versions

Hi,

I am working with a project that I started in QGIS 2.14, and I want to test
QGIS 3.4 with a copy from this project.

When I open the copy as is, I get a message that layers are defect, but when I
mark these layers and click "Apply", nothing happens, and when I click "OK", I
am asked that it is OK to go on with the layers being dropped from the project.
I seems that there is no other option.

Then I am left only with the grpups and subgroups, no layers.

What am I doing wrong?

Best,
Maria
