[Qgis-user] NoData in RGB Imagery

2022-01-13 Per discussione Richard McDonnell
Hi all,
I have a general GIS query and am hoping I can get some insight from the
community.
It relates to how we deal with pixels with no data in RGB Imagery. It seems to
be typical to produce RGB imagery as 8bit with pixel values between 0 and 255,
with either 0 or 255 being used as the NoDATA value. To me this is problematic,
as there can be valid pixels within your image with 0 or 255. To me the
solution is to use 16bit Imagery and to assign the NoDATA value to any value
outside of the 0 - 255 range.
I know in DEM's its usual to use - as your NoDATA value but my question is,
Is there a standardised way to deal with NoDATA in RGB?

I welcome any comments and suggestions.
Regards & Thanks in advance,

Richard.

Re: [Qgis-user] loading geologic symbol library

2022-01-13 Per discussione Bernd Vogelgesang

Hey Benoit,

now all is fine :) Can imagine that it's not so easy to keep everything
up to date .
E.g. the geological stuff from the Resource Sharing Plugin seems to be
mainly non-functional as well at the moment ...

Thanx a bunch!

Bernd

Hi Bernd,

You're right the xml's on the repo do point to non-existent folders.

I've added a FGDC folder to the repo with the correct folder
structure. Copy that folder (FGDC) into one of QGIS svg path folders
and you can then use the xml files to import the svg symbols.

Cheers,
Benoit

Hi Benoit,

sorry for the confusion. I specifically refer to your answer and
the linked project. There is a svg-folder and a folder with the
xml-files from the download.

Setting the path to the svg-folder and then importing the xml is
simply not successful.

As you refered to this project, I assumed that you successfully
imported those styles.

Bernd

Hi Bernd,

Thanks for your comments. It seems I've misread Byron's problem
and assumed that his library is wrapped up into an xml file!

In order to use the solution I've provided you need to have an xml
"library" file describing the .svg files.
Then you point *Settings -> Style Manager... -> Import/Export ->
Import Item(s)...*to the xml file not the svg files.

@Byron, open one of your svg files with a text editor. Does the
first line starts with "'?
If not you probably have downloaded html files embedding svg images!

Benoit

Hi Benoit,

I just tried to import the symbols from the page you mentioned
which leads to this repository:
https://github.com/BC-Consulting/FGDC-4-QGIS/

Now, even with all explanations given, the import seems not to
work properly.

no matter what path I add for the FDGC folder (just the .../FDGC
or the .../FDGC/svg path) , on import, it says, that

- the symbols are already there and gives the option to overwrite
or skip,

This is "normal" behaviour, so just say "overwrite"

- the option to add comma-separted tags (e.g. Geology) does not
work, and no tag at all is given

- all symbols are just question marks

Are those guidelines just precisely unprecise, or am I just to
dumb to understand whats asked from me?

Cheers

Bernd

I don't immediately grasp that, but it seems wrong to say that a
particular journal mode needs to be used to get the right behavior. As
I read the sqlite3 docs, the journal mode should only affect efficiency,

We turn WAL on only because of the second bullet of
https://www.sqlite.org/wal.html:

"WAL provides more concurrency as readers do not block writers and a
writer does not block readers. Reading and writing can proceed
concurrently."

I think it's a DBA-level concept.And perhaps it's reasonable to let

I don't immediately grasp that, but it seems wrong to say that a
particular journal mode needs to be used to get the right behavior. As
I read the sqlite3 docs, the journal mode should only affect efficiency,
not correctness, and sqlite3 should provide the same semantics
guarantees in both cases.

So I think this is evidence of a bug someplace in QGIS/GDAL/sqlite3, and
switching to WAL is a workaround, not a fix.

I don't think it's reasonable to always flip WAL on, because per the
docs WAL is only sound if there is no remote access, plus it breaks the
reads-do-not-write property. I realize qgis checks if *it* is accessing
locally, but it cannot know that nobody else will access the same
geogpackage file over a remote file system. Only the DBA can know that
this is not part of the larger operational config/plan.

The underlying big issue here is that sqlite3 sort of offers to let
people use databases without understanding them, and without having some
clue in a DBA role, like you'd expect with a postgis/postgresql setup.
But it seems that once there is any WAL, sqlite3 usage is not longer in
the "does not need to be understood" category. That's a lot of why I
favor "let the DBA turn on WAL if they want, and don't change it
programmatically by default'.

Re: [Qgis-user] loading geologic symbol library

2022-01-13 Per discussione Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi Benoit,

I just tried to import the symbols from the page you mentioned which
leads to this repository: https://github.com/BC-Consulting/FGDC-4-QGIS/

Now, even with all explanations given, the import seems not to work
properly.

no matter what path I add for the FDGC folder (just the .../FDGC or the
.../FDGC/svg path) , on import, it says, that

- the symbols are already there and gives the option to overwrite or skip,

- the option to add comma-separted tags (e.g. Geology) does not work,
and no tag at all is given

- all symbols are just question marks

Are those guidelines just precisely unprecise, or am I just to dumb to
understand whats asked from me?

Cheers

Bernd

[Qgis-user] Hstore in temporary layer?

2022-01-13 Per discussione Kai Borgolte
Hi all,

I wanted to paste some features from PostgreSQL as new temporary layer,
but QGIS complains "WARNINGObjekte einfügen : Konnte Feld tags
(hstore,QVariantMap) nicht anlegen". Is this not implemented?
