This is not implemented yet, see ticket #10
(http://www.geofrogger.net/trac/ticket/10).

I haven't looked into the topic of netCDF at all yet. Neither me nor Volker
have any experience with this format. Currently, I'm not planning to add
separate support. So it won't be supported unless netCDF layers behave like any
other vector layer.

Best wishes,
Anita

That should still be possible, if your GDAL/OGR has Oracle Spatial support
builtin.

Read only is fine for my purposes, but it's very disappointing about the SDK.

So, I guess I'm about to find out what I can mess up with a full install.

The GdalTools plugin may need to be enabled. Do this from the Plugins menu ->
Manage Plugins.

The GDAL framework in the standalone Qgis can use GDAL plugins (not Qgis
plugins) in the standard locations (for GDAL). I have an ECW plugin that's a
separate package. But I just realized that it will only install if it finds
the GDAL framework, so there's no simple way to use it with Qgis standalone.
You would have to install the standard Qgis plus the frameworks.

Note also that the ECW support on OS X is read-only. I couldn't figure out
some problems with my limited C++ skills, and ER/Leica is no help (and they
seem to have killed off Mac and *nix support with their latest SDK).

I have asked this before - but still have no joy.

I need to connect to spatial data that is stored in an Oracle database (SDO).
In QGIS 1.4 I could add a vector layer, select "Database" then select "Oracle".
In 1.5 this is no longer available. Any idea of how I can do this - if at all?

Hello,
a very nice plugin. Thanks for providing it!

I have two questions:

How do I use this with aggregated data:
e.g. a data set of monthly averages of rainfall created from 20 years of
data?
So my data set contains an average value for each month of the year but
no fixed date.

How does this work with netCDF?
QGIS had some problems with these 4D-ready data sets.

Not all providers support all editing operations. For example, OGR
library does not support deleting attributes. To check what operations
are working, use provider's capabilities() method:

print "delete supported?", provider.capabilities() &
QgsVectorDataProvider.DeleteAttributes

One more note: in the above code, you use layer's commitChanges()
method. This is not necessary (nor correct) here, here's the deal:
When calling provider's editing methods, the changes are immediately
written to the data store (file / database etc). On the other hand,
editing methods of QgsVectorLayer use a temporary buffer and the
workflow is as follows:
1. call vlayer.startEditing() ... otherwise the layer's editing
functions will fail
2. call layer's editing methods ... all changes are kept in the editing buffer
3. call vlayer.commitChanges() ... to push the pending changes to the provider
Alternatively instead of committing changes, you could do a rollback:
vlayer.rollback() to discard any changes.
Both commitChanges() and rollback() quit the editing mode, so you
would have to call startEditing() again.

[Qgis-user] ftools query

2010-10-07 Thread Erica Donnelly-Swift

Hi All,

I'm having difficulty loading ftools... I'm working on Mac OSX 10.5.8,
QGIS 1.4.0

I have two vector .shp files, one contains counties and the other
contains collision points.
I'm trying to link the collision points with the counties to create
one new shape file I need to have an attribute table that contains the
information from both maps as I will be exporting this data into R for
analysis. (e.g. I need an attribute table allowing the collisions to
correspond with county names). I have read on an older post that
ftools is required, however I'm having difficulty loading this plugin.

Plugins -> manage plugins and ftools is selected, however when I
scroll through my plugins drop-down menu, ftools is not present?

Is there any step I'm missing to install ftools?
(Aside: looking at fetch python plugins the status of ftools is
'installed')

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

[Qgis-user] satellite band manipulation

2010-10-07 Thread Brad Nesom
I am interested in applying the theory described in the linked article to a
satellite image.
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.140.5218&rep=rep1&type=pdf
My goal is to depict hot spots on the earth surface. My problem is I am not
very mathematically inclined and I don't program from sctratch well either.

I understand that I need to convert the values in the band I am interested
in (band 7). I am interested in band 7 because the values in th shortwave IR
I am interested in are sharp spikes running around 100DN higher than
anything else in the image. So they are visible in daytime on this band. I
am not sure about the values in band 7. What I need to convert from? I
believe I need to use Planck's radiation equation. The document I have
linked to goes way over my head. I have a good assortment of software at my
disposal to accomplish this once I understand what I need to do. Qgis may or
may not be the tool to do this with.
I appreciate any direction or help with this project.

2010-10-07 Thread Pierre Chevalier Géologue

Terry Schmitt claviota avec insistance:

...
I am using EnterpriseDB Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.4 with Oracle
compatibility. It's essentially Postgres under the hood and pretty
much any Postgres tool can utilize the advanced server. I'm using
PostGIS 1.5.1-3.
I'm logged in as a superuser.

It doesn't matter what options I select in the "Create a New PostGIS
connection" dialog. It always throws the same error.
utl_smtp happens to be a oracle compatibility "Package". In reality
it's a schema containing a bunch of functions plus a little extra
magic written by EnterpriseDB. There are quite a few of these schemas.
I thought that selecting "Only look in the geometry_columns table"
option would work, but it still errors out.
I'm pretty confident that QGIS could be made to work with EnterpriseDB
or maybe I'm missing something silly?
Anyone ever run across this before?

No. But I had sometimes similar problems when using a postgresql
database which went through some commercial products, or some GUIs. Some
names (tables, fields, schemas) sometimes contained uppercase letters
mixed with lowercase. This caused problems in some situations (in psql,
and also in qgis, if I remember well). I had to rename manually the
concerned names to lowercase, and it worked. Another solution was to
include the concerned names within double quotes.

I'm absolutely not sure if you are in this cas; but the fact that you
mentioned some third-party software rang a bell. You could check, in
psql (something as "neutral" as possible, if the schema "utl_smtp" isn't
"Utl_smtp" or "Utl_Smtp" or "uTL_sMtP" or anything similar...

Hope it helps

Timmie claviota:

If you have to prepare a map that contains data stretching over several UTM
zones (e.g. a large country), what projection do you chose for country-wide data
sets?

For such maps, I usually prefer non-projected systems: latitude -
longitude with WGS84 is my favourite. Your coordinates are in degrees,
but it does not matter much, with such a scale.
If your country is located close to a pole, it may look strange,
though... Which country are you thinking of?

I think splitting such data in smaller chunks for the respecive zones would not
be too practical.

Yes.
