Download and install psycopg2 2.4.2.

It is python package, not part of QGIS or QGIS plugins.

The ProfileFromLine plugin works quite well for this, but it requires
the python library Shapely-1.2. On windows the OSGeo installer at this
point installs an older version of Shapely, so the plugin won't run. To
get it to work have a look at this thread for some tips:
http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/Profile-Tool-td6745484.html

On Linux, you should be able to download the tarball, unpack it and run:
 python setup.py install
from inside the Shapely-1.2.x directory. And the Profile from Line
plugin will then install.

You can use the Query option from the Layer menu to determine which
points will be displayed, including their labels.

Is there a workaround for this?

Yes Win 7 comes in 64bit flavor. What was meant above is that there is
no pre-compiled QGIS for 64bit Windows, Which is something we really
ought to work on changing.

There are some options out there to buy without windows at all(That's
what I did). Nvidia has better closed source drivers for linux right
now. The open source drivers are not as good as what's been done for
ATI, but FOSS drivers lag behind new cards.

Enjoy,

Yes, but before that just statint the current CRS in which the
coordinates are provided would be more urgent.

Sorry by the typo error! yes, I mean the xml files with the metadata.

Also, our cartographic institute always mentions ISO 19115/19139 . Is
that compatible
with your 19115? As far (little) as I understand, 19139 is an
specification for 19115.

Thanks again for helping out with this nightmare of the metadata

Currently Metatools write bbox "as is" without any CRS conversion.
Maybe we should add new setting, something like
"Convert bbox into WGS84".

GDAL SQLite driver does not make the most valid Spatialite databases. Alessandro
Furieri (man behind Spatialite)wrote:
"The current version of the spatialite's OGR driver
has many severe issues.
Shortly said, you cannot safely use OGR to create a
SpatiaLite own DB, because this will simply produce
a broken (invalid, inconsistent) DB.
I've already developed a full patchset for OGR, and
I hope to be able to release the code to the GDAL
project ASAP"

While waiting for the patches there are two usable methods for making valid,
consistent DB:
1. Import shapefiles directly with Spatialite tools or with Spatialite-gui.
2. Use ogr2ogr first with options
   ogr2ogr -f "SQLite" -dsco SPATIALITE=yes -lco SPATIAL_INDEX=no temp.sqlite
source_data
3. Clean up the temporary spatialite database with Openlite utility by creating
a new empty database and copying the tables from the temp.sqlite into it.

Spatialite=yes option needs gdal 1.7.0 or higher
http://www.gdal.org/ogr/drv_sqlite.html

The troubles with Spatialite databases created by ogr2ogr are not very big. Some
foreign key constraints and triggers are not OK which makes it harder to make
properly working spatial views into database etc. For simple read-only access to
the tables the databases created with ogr2ogr are OK.

[Qgis-user] Problems with Metatools

2011-09-28 Thread Agustin Lobo
Hi!

I'm starting to use Metatools (thanks a lot for this very useful tool)
and find 2 problems:

1. In Apply Templates/Data Type, clicking on Manage gives the following error:
An error has occured while executing Python code:

[GCC 4.4.3]

2. The 2 boxes in Apply Templates (Extract Layer... and Generate
previre...) must be clicked every time.

3. When the Metadata of one geotif layer are created, the geographic
box does not seem to have taken the CRS into account:
Longitudes and Latitudes are given in UTM units. Not sure if the
program should convert to Geographic WGS84 or keep
the original CRS (or both), but in the last case the CRS should be
displayed as well as the coordinates.

4. Can the xls files be loaded as layers so that the user can explore
whatever layers are available for a given region?

Thanks!

After reading all the answers and re-projecting to 4326 from the

projection of my .tiff data, because all my files in WGS84 projects at
approximately the same coordinates (-92,35 as Brad said) but my raster
file of the same area is at (25,35), so if i want to project all files
at this CRS i have to "move" somehow my .tiff file at the above
coordinates (and not the opposite as i was trying so long), am i right
or wrong? Is there a way to change the coordinates that my tiff
projects? I tried "on the fly" and by specifying the 4326 CRS from the file's
properties but that
doesn't changed anything, 25,35 remains.

Thanks all for the answers, I know i am a bit trouble!

Hi,

launching QGIS 1.7.0 on SuSE Enterprice 11 the program crashes during
loading Python with Segmentation fault.

The same on OpenSuSE 11 works.

Here is the debugger-output (gdb):

[Qgis-user] RE: [Qgis-community-team] Problem changing a shapefile's coordinates

2011-09-28 Thread giannis Nj

After reading all the answers and re-projecting to 4326 from the
original .shp file (using save as..), i think that my problem is the
projection of my .tiff data, because all my files in WGS84 projects at
approximately the same coordinates (-92,35 as Brad said) but my raster
file of the same area is at (25,35), so if i want to project all files
at this CRS i have to "move" somehow my .tiff file at the above
coordinates (and not the opposite as i was trying so long), am i right
or wrong? Is there a way to change the coordinates that my tiff
projects? I tried "on the fly" and by specifying the 4326 CRS from the file's
properties but that
doesn't changed anything, 25,35 remains.

Thanks all for the answers, I know i am a bit trouble!

Re: [Qgis-user] File-based Mastermap

2011-09-28 Thread jonathanmoules
Thanks for the flurry of responses folks. There's an interesting variety
there.
SpatiaLite would probably be the optimal solution; FME does have a
reader/writer for it "SQLite Spatial(FDO)" plus "SQLite Non-spatial",
though I'm not clear if this is the same thing as "SpatiaLite". However,
it's not a format I'm familiar with (definitely going to have to look into
it though), and because I need simplicity first and foremost, I've used
Jason's "create spatial index" which worked great.

Thanks to all respondents,
Jonathan

You can use PostGIS. Just need to install it locally and import all your
data to localhost.

You can use Virtual Raster for 10k, 25k and 50k OS. And use zoom
dependency to turn the layers on and off on different zooms.

In QGIS, you can convert to all sorts of vector format supported by
OGR/GDAL as well.

Re: [Qgis-user] File-based Mastermap

2011-09-28 Thread Andreas Neumann

Perhaps you could also look into SpatiaLite.

It comes without the limitations of Shapefiles (column names, file
sizes) and is fast and a database without installation (file based).

Also you need to copy only one file instead of multiple ones.

SpatiaLite is not yet supported by FME (will be supported from FME 2013
on I heard) - but you can use ogr2ogr for file translations.

I believe the new DB-Manager Plugin from the last Google Summer of Code
can also assist in converting data from Postgis to SpatiaLite, but I am
not 100% sure.

Hello!

No, a database could well be a possibility :-)
Spatialite, which would have the advantage that you have just one file
for the data, and additionally the advantages of a database concerning
other (attribute) data...queries, views etc.

Thanks Andreas,

I think Win 7 has a 64bit version (will check though).

I would love to dual-boot win laptop with linux (and, hopefully, this does
not affect the dealer's and manufacture's warranty). Naturally, I would wipe
win, install linux and VMs :)

I would mainly make sure you have enough RAM and an OS that can benefit
of the additional RAM. I would recommend at least 4GB RAM, better 8.

Linux 64bit should be able to use the additional RAM, the Win32 QGIS
cannot use more than 2 or 3GB. As far as I know there is no 64bit
Windows version available.

If you can afford the SSD it certainly helps. I have a new Macbook Pro
with a SSD running on Ubuntu 64bit. It is very fast, but expensive.

I take that Ubuntu runs well on both Nvidia and ATI. My experience

I have an Asus, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 256MB, 115 GB SSD, 13" wide -
already 3 years old, only thing I've done is swap for the SSD
recently.

That's cool! I definitely wanna give a SSD a go.

Thanks mate for the pointers :)

SSD - Though it takes some care to set it up right and make sure you
have backups. Intels are the most reliable but most expensive. I'm
trying a Mushkin right now. OCZ while the "fastest" has the most drives
dying based on reviews.
RAM - 4Gb
Video - Discrete ATI or Nvidia 256 MB or more
Screen - Depends on how big of thing you want to lug around 15" wide is
pretty big.
Second Screen - Whatever you get a good deal on
iCore5 best bang for $
USB, USB, USB, USB ...
Opt for whatever the bigger battery is if you want battery life
64 bit

Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Apple - If you want long term quality buy the
business line not the consumer lines.

I have an Asus, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 256MB, 115 GB SSD, 13" wide - already 3
years old, only thing I've done is swap for the SSD recently.

Want more details email me off list..
FYI I'm running Ubuntu 64 bit with a windows 7 VM that runs Arc well
enough for me to teach with it.

[Qgis-user] Tips on buying a new laptop

2011-09-28 Thread percy langa
Heya,

So I've decided to register for a GIS Module, along with other modules as
part of a Bsc Hons Geography Degree.

The good news is that this is an opportunity to get a new laptop, a fresh
start :) The not-so-good news is that the GIS course is based on IDRISI
(well, I have never used IDRISI, and I am really liking QGIS at the moment).

So, I wanna get a feel on what laptop hardware are people running for GIS:

- SSD vs HDD
- RAM type and speed
- Video/Graphics
- Main Screen (15'', 17'', etc)
- Secondary Screen (20'', 22'', 24'', etc)
- Glossy vs Matte Screens
- Screen Resolutions
- Motherboard
- Processor
- Peripherals and Ports
- Battery packs

and, finally:

- OS or OSes
- 32bit vs 64bit

Besides GIS, this new laptop will do all the normal home tasks incl movie
playback. No games (well, maybe Angry Birds, Mario Brothers and
Classic Arcades).

I am not too perturbed about brands as, over the years, I have switched
between Lenovo, ACER, Samsung, HP and Apple. Lenovo topped the charts for
me. Dell would make an interesting case study :)

Many thanks,
Percy
