Re: [Qgis-user] clicking Project properties crashes qgis

To remove any QGIS configuration Windows users should:

1. delete .qgis directory
2. Deletion of the key from regestry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QuantumGIS\

[Qgis-user] How to display an arrow pointing at a certain bearing from a point file

2012-06-27 Thread Jeremy Hill
I have a number of point features which contain an attribute I call bearing
and another one called slope. Each point has a bearing between 0 to 359
degrees. And the slope is either +15 or -15, etc, such as +15% or -15%
depending on the steepest slope of the ground.

What I am wanting to do is display an arrow on the map with the arrow pointing
in the bearing direction. With a negative slope% pointing outward from the
point and a positive slope% pointing inward to the point.

I'm using this in a forestry context with cruise plots. I'm fairly certain that
ArcGIS can do this (As I've seen it on maps) but I'm hoping that QGIS can as
well.___

Re: [Qgis-user] clicking Project properties crashes qgis

2012-06-27 Thread Tomas_IV
I can confirm the crash here, after uninstalling QGIS 1.7.3 and installing
1.8.0 (on Windows 7). Not sure if I removed the 1.7.3 before or after
instalation of 1.8.0, I thought the latter case might be the cause of the
crashes.
The crash occurs even after opening QGIS with new empty project, when I
select the Project properties, or when I try to load a shapefile with
JTSK/Krovak CRS to the new project without attemting to set its properties.
It also occurs if I open new empty project, load any (other than krovak)
shapefile and then try to view its properties.
Anyway, I tried this: 1. uninstalled QGIS, 2. deleted .qgis folder, 3.
installed QGIS. Result: after selecting project properties of new empty
project, there is crash again.
I heard about removal of some krovak CRS definitions (i do not have
possibility to look what is missing in the definitions, because trying to
open them crashes QGIS), and seeing different behaviour when opening krovak
and other layers and also seeing that Jakub is a Czech name, this might be
related. But if it is, there must be other means than the .qgis folder, by
which QGIS remembers there was a missing CRS used before (registers?),
because after clean reinstall it crashes when nothing related to krovak was
done, just selected project properties...

Now I tried to run QGIS from commandline and voila, things started to work.
Even with subsequent starts by the program icon. I did delete the .qgis
folder, opened terminal (Start/Run../cmd) and pasted into the terminal the
commad i acquired by copying from the program icon properties. The command
was in my case:
C:\Program Files\Quantum GIS Lisboa\bin\nircmd.exe exec hide C:\Program
Files\Quantum GIS Lisboa\bin\nircmd.exe exec hide
Hope this helps also to you...

[Qgis-user] Isolate area of water supply network using existing valves

2012-06-27 Thread 欧阳乐岩

Hi all,

I have a water distribution network with valves. For any given
selection, I would like to find the valves that can be used to isolate
it from the rest of the network and extract the selected area. This is a
very standard feature for GIS aimed at water supply.

It is not a very complicated problem and after failing to find a tool
doing it, I started a plugin that can do it. However, before spending
too much time trying to do it cleanly and efficiently, is there a way to
do it already that I have overlooked, e.g. via a plugin, a Sextante
algorithm, etc. ?

This seems like in could be a quite general tool in network
manipulation, does this problem have a more general name that could help
me find resources ?

[Qgis-user] On format and coordinate systems transformation

2012-06-27 Thread Mats Elfström
Hi Group!

I will begin this post with a disclaimer. This is no advertisement, or
endorsed statement. I intend it as friendly advice to fellow professionals,
for the good of the industry and our reputation.

Many posts on this list come from users who struggle to move geodata
between software systems or projections and coordinate systems. Several
times a week or even per day, more or less tricky conversion problems are
aired. This is a good thing. It shows that more people are using more
geodata, and wants to combine data from various sources. This is one
important purpose of a GIS.

However, format conversion and coordinate transformation can be tricky
business. If performed improperly, or with inadequate tools, mistakes can
result in loss of information, or distorted or misplaced features. Such
errors may be apparent, but can also go unnoticed, and later reflect badly
on the person or institution that supplied the data.

While I appreciate that all data handling tips on this list are given in
good faith, I have seen those that are outright wrong, difficult or even
dangerous, and not in line with what I judge to be Good Practice of our
trade.

There is really only one professional and system independent tool for all
kinds of spatial data conversion, and that is FME from Safe Software. I
would recommend no other. Only FME can safely handle the multitude of
coordinate systems and the ever-evolving types and versions of file
formats. Add to that the ability to extract, validate and combine data from
different sources into a single workflow. The Workbench, where you
graphically build your workflow is one of the best GUI:s I know. You can
build very complicated workflows and save them for later use. For recurring
conversion tasks, this ensures that each data transfer is performed exactly
like before. Workbench files can be built by FME and GIS pros, and
distributed for the use of others who just needs a task done.

Quality does not come cheap, and I realize that the cost of FME can seem
prohibitive. However, if you take into account the time and effort that
people must use to try to tweak this tool here, or find that script there,
with perhaps unpredictable results; you may find that the money for an FME
license is well spent. On the other hand, consider the risk that lost or
distorted information leads to costly damage further on in the chain.

Whenever I attend a seminar or conference on GIS/GIT/mapping and surveying,
people mention FME as an everyday tool: “Oh, and then we of course have
some FME scripts to process the data.”

The support from Safe Software is excellent. They depend on that their
tools can be used, so problems and suggestions for improvement are dealt
with promptly and kindly. There is always a fresh beta build available to
try out the latest fixes or additions.

Visit www.safe.com to find out more, and note that any flavor of FME
Desktop can be downloaded for a free 14 day trial.

table creation was successful, but the table was not recognized, as a spatial
table and I was not able to draw geometries int it once loaded in QGIS.
Is this a bug? What is the best procedure to create a spatialite table?

[Qgis-user] rst conversion: problem with references

2012-06-27 Thread Larissa Junek
Hi all,

while the call for a reference works fine when I deal with figures, the
link to a section doesn't work.
For example in the plugins_gps.rst I defined:

... see section `defining-new-device`_ this is the call for the
reference
.. _`defining-new-device`: this is the reference

Can somebody help? What did I do wrong.

Kind regards,

2012-06-27 Thread jbogdani
Hello,
I'm reopening this topic, because I'm not succeeding in installing qgis in a
second Windows (Vista) machine.
During installation I get an error relative to crssync (CRSSYNC.exe stopped
working).
Once installed I get the The procedure entry point sqlite3_open_v2 could
not be located in the dynamic link library sqlite3.dll error!

Deleted everything, reinstalled, the same problem occurs. Renamed all
occurrences of sqlite.dll in my system did not solve the problem. Removed
Osgeo4w and installed the standalone version does not work at all. Same
message error during the installation, no error shown on qgis start, and
qgis does not start at all!

I've nstalled qgis 1.8 in several PC: both vista and 7. This is the first
time I can not get it work.
Master version 1.9 does open but crashes as soon as I try to open my project
file (based on spatialite vectors)!
Any help is appreciated! I need it work as soon as possible :(

[Qgis-user] Problem with adding a PostGIS query using Python

2012-06-27 Thread James Stott
I cannot seem to get this query to work. The python code I am using is:

db_conn = dbname=database' host=SERVER port=5432
user='postgres' password=''
id_field = gid
table=(SELECT * FROM \designations\.\table\ WHERE
ST_DWithin(ST_GeomFromText('POINT(451583 129144)',27700),
\table\.\geom\, 2000))
uri = %s key=%s table=%s (geom) sql= %
(db_conn,id_field,table,)
layer = QgsVectorLayer(uri, testlayer, postgres)
QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().addMapLayer(layer)

QGIS keeps telling me the following:

Unable to access the (SELECT relation. The error message from the
database was: ERROR: relation (SELECT does not exist LINE 1: SELECT *
FROM (SELECT LIMIT 1

It's almost as if something is automatically putting another SELECT
statement in front of my SELECT statement.

I can get this query to load using the DB manager plugin SQL window.

I have read this article and it still errors.

http://www.carsonfarmer.com/?p=713

Does anyone know why this doesn't work?

Using QGIS 1.8 on Windows 7 64bit, data is in a PostGIS 2.0 database.

Re: [Qgis-user] On format and coordinate systems transformation

2012-06-27 Thread Alex Mandel
On 06/27/2012 06:45 AM, Mats Elfström wrote:

 Best Regards, Mats.E

Thanks for the info I have heard great things about FME, but as a word
of caution I have also heard of errors the occur only in FME with
certain formats being unusable as the output (something related to
postgis if I'm remembering correctly).

So while I do think it's good for people to pay attention to this, do
not trust software just because you bought it (use that help you paid
for) or alternately because it's open source. In regards to
transformations, when it's critical data, find a way to verify your
results, possibly doing the same transformation using 2 different libs.

As I discovered helping someone the other day GDAL based apps have
issues with Oblique mercator projections (outstanding bug) and UDig does
the conversion correctly.

Thanks,
Alex

I know the docs are currently undergoing revision, but currently the

still say to click the Add 3rd party repositories button.

Last night I added the QGIS Contributed Repository to 1.8 to get a
plugin I used in 1.7.4 that is not (yet?) in Official, but I'm a
little unclear about whether the distinction between Official and
Contributed will be meaningful going forward.
IIUC, any plugin that satisfies some minimal requirements (no
malicious code, at least minimal documentation, etc.) will get
approved for Official. Is the idea that all plugins from Contributed
should migrate to Official (at the authors' initiation and timetable)
and Contributed will go away?

No, not on the main page, but on the download page:

 http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download

QGIS is available on Windows, MacOS X, Linux and Android. Binary packages
are provided for the current version. The current version is QGIS 1.7.4 and
was released on 19 February 2012.

 If someone could fix it...

[Qgis-user] too long field

2012-06-27 Thread Aitor Bastarrica Izaguirre

Dear QGIS users,
I have an issue with the location based attribute join (spatial join).
I have two shapefile, a point and a polygon layer. I would like to
compute a sum statistic (based on the points that are inside each
polygon). The problem is that the original fields are already 10
characters long, and when the program tries to add the SUM prefix, it
exceeds the 10 characters limit, and it shows an error dialog.

I'm working on 1.7.4 version.

Any suggestions?

Best regards,
Aitor Bastarrika

2012-06-27 Thread Christine
If you mean the length of the field name being already 10 characters long,
you might rename/abbreviate the field name using the Table Manager plugin.
Another way would be creating a new field with a shorter name and writing
the given values to the new field with the field calculator ...

I'm not a ubuntu nut, but watching the list I offer three thoughts.
1. Lots of programmes (QGIS included) are having issues with the default

2. Pick only one source for your .deb files.
3. One topic an email :)

[Qgis-user] Add a point on a layer using lat/long coordinates

2012-06-27 Thread Daniel Kranich

Hello,

Lets say I have a set of lat/long coordinates that i would like to add
as points to an existing layer in my map. How would i do that?? I saw
that the numerical vertex editor plugin will let me add x,y coordinates
but that has to be in reference to something and i don't know what the
reference is. It would be much handier to be able to just add the points
via lat/long coordinates.

Thanks for your help,

As long as you have Enable 'on the fly' CRS transformation checked
(File→Project Properties→Coordinate Reference System tab), layers in
different UTM zones should display in correct relationship to each
other. If you do this a lot, you probably want to set Enable 'on the
fly' reprojection by default in Settings→Options.

If you have on the fly enabled, and the zones still aren't displaying
correctly, please provide additional information about your data.

 deb http://qgis.org/debian precise main
 deb-src http://qgis.org/debian precise main
 deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu precise

You only need the last one, the first two conflict with the 3rd. So it's
either qgis.org or ubuntugis ppa not both.

Note that only ubuntugis will get you gdal 1.9.x+

Sadly the software center isn't really geared towards power users so it
can be somewhat confusing to use that to the installs. I recommend
either Synaptic or command line. The proper commands are listed on the
download page.
