[Qgis-user] How to display an arrow pointing at a certain bearing from a point file
I have a number of point features which contain an attribute I call bearing and another one called slope. Each point has a bearing between 0 to 359 degrees. And the slope is either +15 or -15, etc, such as +15% or -15% depending on the steepest slope of the ground. What I am wanting to do is display an arrow on the map with the arrow pointing in the bearing direction. With a negative slope% pointing outward from the point and a positive slope% pointing inward to the point. I'm using this in a forestry context with cruise plots. I'm fairly certain that ArcGIS can do this (As I've seen it on maps) but I'm hoping that QGIS can as well.___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Re: [Qgis-user] clicking Project properties crashes qgis
I can confirm the crash here, after uninstalling QGIS 1.7.3 and installing 1.8.0 (on Windows 7). Not sure if I removed the 1.7.3 before or after instalation of 1.8.0, I thought the latter case might be the cause of the crashes. The crash occurs even after opening QGIS with new empty project, when I select the Project properties, or when I try to load a shapefile with JTSK/Krovak CRS to the new project without attemting to set its properties. It also occurs if I open new empty project, load any (other than krovak) shapefile and then try to view its properties. Anyway, I tried this: 1. uninstalled QGIS, 2. deleted .qgis folder, 3. installed QGIS. Result: after selecting project properties of new empty project, there is crash again. I heard about removal of some krovak CRS definitions (i do not have possibility to look what is missing in the definitions, because trying to open them crashes QGIS), and seeing different behaviour when opening krovak and other layers and also seeing that Jakub is a Czech name, this might be related. But if it is, there must be other means than the .qgis folder, by which QGIS remembers there was a missing CRS used before (registers?), because after clean reinstall it crashes when nothing related to krovak was done, just selected project properties... Now I tried to run QGIS from commandline and voila, things started to work. Even with subsequent starts by the program icon. I did delete the .qgis folder, opened terminal (Start/Run../cmd) and pasted into the terminal the commad i acquired by copying from the program icon properties. The command was in my case: C:\Program Files\Quantum GIS Lisboa\bin\nircmd.exe exec hide C:\Program Files\Quantum GIS Lisboa\bin\nircmd.exe exec hide Hope this helps also to you... However, before spending too much time trying to do it cleanly and efficiently, is there a way to do it already that I have overlooked, e.g. via a plugin, a Sextante algorithm, etc. ? [Qgis-user] On format and coordinate systems transformation
Hi Group! I will begin this post with a disclaimer. This is no advertisement, or endorsed statement. I intend it as friendly advice to fellow professionals, for the good of the industry and our reputation. Many posts on this list come from users who struggle to move geodata between software systems or projections and coordinate systems. Several times a week or even per day, more or less tricky conversion problems are aired. This is a good thing. It shows that more people are using more geodata, and wants to combine data from various sources. This is one important purpose of a GIS. However, format conversion and coordinate transformation can be tricky business. If performed improperly, or with inadequate tools, mistakes can result in loss of information, or distorted or misplaced features. Such errors may be apparent, but can also go unnoticed, and later reflect badly on the person or institution that supplied the data. While I appreciate that all data handling tips on this list are given in good faith, I have seen those that are outright wrong, difficult or even dangerous, and not in line with what I judge to be Good Practice of our trade. There is really only one professional and system independent tool for all kinds of spatial data conversion, and that is FME from Safe Software. I would recommend no other. Only FME can safely handle the multitude of coordinate systems and the ever-evolving types and versions of file formats. Add to that the ability to extract, validate and combine data from different sources into a single workflow. The Workbench, where you graphically build your workflow is one of the best GUI:s I know. You can build very complicated workflows and save them for later use. For recurring conversion tasks, this ensures that each data transfer is performed exactly like before. Workbench files can be built by FME and GIS pros, and distributed for the use of others who just needs a task done. Quality does not come cheap, and I realize that the cost of FME can seem prohibitive. However, if you take into account the time and effort that people must use to try to tweak this tool here, or find that script there, with perhaps unpredictable results; you may find that the money for an FME license is well spent. On the other hand, consider the risk that lost or distorted information leads to costly damage further on in the chain. Whenever I attend a seminar or conference on GIS/GIT/mapping and surveying, people mention FME as an everyday tool: “Oh, and then we of course have some FME scripts to process the data.” The support from Safe Software is excellent. They depend on that their tools can be used, so problems and suggestions for improvement are dealt with promptly and kindly. There is always a fresh beta build available to try out the latest fixes or additions. Visit www.safe.com to find out more, and note that any flavor of FME Desktop can be downloaded for a free 14 day trial. Re: [Qgis-user] On format and coordinate systems transformation
On 06/27/2012 06:45 AM, Mats Elfström wrote: Hi Group! Best Regards, Mats.E Thanks for the info I have heard great things about FME, but as a word of caution I have also heard of errors the occur only in FME with certain formats being unusable as the output (something related to postgis if I'm remembering correctly). So while I do think it's good for people to pay attention to this, do not trust software just because you bought it (use that help you paid for) or alternately because it's open source. In regards to transformations, when it's critical data, find a way to verify your results, possibly doing the same transformation using 2 different libs. As I discovered helping someone the other day GDAL based apps have issues with Oblique mercator projections (outstanding bug) and UDig does the conversion correctly. I currently have the following in the 'sources.list'. deb http://qgis.org/debian precise main deb-src http://qgis.org/debian precise main deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu precise main You only need the last one, the first two conflict with the 3rd. So it's either qgis.org or ubuntugis ppa not both. Note that only ubuntugis will get you gdal 1.9.x+ Enjoy, Alex ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

I have 12.04 and used the software center to first uninstall 1.7.4 and then to install 1.8. Please what can I do to download the package files? Thanks for any help Jake Sadly the software center isn't really geared towards power users so it can be somewhat confusing to use that to the installs. I recommend either Synaptic or command line. The proper commands are listed on the download page. http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#262-With-updated-dependencies Enjoy, Alex PS: We can easily help you with this on IRC too ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
Re: [Qgis-user] Add a point on a layer using lat/long coordinates
you can create a table with lat/long coordinates, save it as csv, then you can use the csv import plugin and specify the correct csv (epsg 4326 or else) lt Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:01:47 -0800 From: Daniel Kranich dan...@nusalaska.com To: qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org Subject: [Qgis-user] Add a point on a layer using lat/long coordinates Message-ID: 4feb9eeb.1000...@nusalaska.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Hello, Lets say I have a set of lat/long coordinates that i would like to add as points to an existing layer in my map. How would i do that?? I saw that the numerical vertex editor plugin will let me add x,y coordinates but that has to be in reference to something and i don't know what the reference is. It would be much handier to be able to just add the points via lat/long coordinates.
