[Qgis-user] Google earth kml file not opening in Qgis

2012-07-27 Thread Harikumar Sivanandan
Sir,
I exported a kml file consisting of roads, paths and lines from My places
in Google maps. It is opening in Google Earth, but I am not able to open it
as a vector layer in QGIS.
However I am able to open a Google earth kml file consisting of only points
in QGIS. What should I do to open a kml file consisting of lines?
With regards
Harikumar

Re: [Qgis-user] Print Composer: Best Practices

2012-07-27 Thread Gordon Lane
Thanks to all who responded (and who may yet still). I'll try out the
various tricks.

I have used a variety of PDF printers but still get issues with color and
crispness (understanding that a autumn-crisp image will be a large file).

And I take back what I said about print composer being "useless" -- I just
didn't pay attention to how it was working. I saw the legend wasn't the
same in reloads, and assumed the rest was jacked up, too. Now I see it just
adds layers you might have excluded from the legend before. My bad!

[Qgis-user] showing google layers, downloading 1.8.0

2012-07-27 Thread john raskulinecz

Dear List, Just wanted to thank again those who offered help to me in the past
and to let all know that I got a Google satilite image to load in Qgis 1.8 with
the open layers pluggin. I first had to download the new Qgis version onto a
flash drive as win 7 64 bit (or maybe my anti virus or browser) would not let
it go to my hard drive.I'll be playing with it over the next few days but so
far I am very impressed. Kudos to the developer. thanks again from a very

Re: [Qgis-user] clipping shapefiles

2012-07-27 Thread Randal Hale
if you want to clip along a county there are several ways to do this. My
suggestion.

Select the county (I am assuming you have that as a layer in QGIS).
Go to Vector -> Geoprocessing tools -> Clip
Clip out the streets using the selected county.

That should give you a new streets layer.

Have you tried in QGIS to write the content of your real field to a new
integer (4) field using the attribute calculator ?
[Open attribute table > toggle editing > Open field calculator (right button
below attribute table, should be active) ]
Create a new field with Definition Integer 4 and give it a NewFieldName. In
the expression field write: "OldFieldName"

Did a test and it worked with a shapefile.

2012-07-27 Thread Tim Sutton
Hi

There is a Google Summer of Code project to make a native dedicated
touch screen interface to the QGIS library (i.e. with a totally
separate user interface). The current QGIS android offering works on
e.g. my HTC One X but is not really (usable other than for a quick
show off) - it is much more intended to run on a tablet computer.

[Qgis-user] Change the Field type (.dbf)

2012-07-27 Thread Sławomir Bienias

Hello,
I have a problem with my fields... in QGis.
I work with QGis 1.8 on Ubuntu 12.04.

I need to have Attribute Table with specific type of field - Integer
(4,0).
It is not table from SHP file, only DBF - it's additional table to
join with main table from SHP. It is huge table, so I filled it with
LibreOffice Calc. And when I save the table, type of my field is
changing itself - now is Float (6,2). And I can't change it. It
doesn't work, when I'm trying to change it in Calc. And in QGis I
didn't find any option to do that operation.

I tried to find the answer on Google, but I didn't find any way to
solve my problem.

Is there any way to change field type in DBF table in QGis? Or maybe
other application can do it?

[Qgis-user] qgis server problem with custom RS

2012-07-27 Thread andrea pacifici
Hi to everyone,

I'm trying to set-up a WMS server using Qgis-server. The WMS should
provide maps of planetary bodies, such as Mars, and this imply that
I'm using custom RS. But when I try to load one of such maps in Qgis
the program prompts an error saying that the requested map contains a
RS not available.
The same data and RS work OK both with Qgis desktop than with mapserver

Any Idea? many thanks

Is the GPS working properly in Nexus 7?

Have you use MyTracks to record gpx, kml?

I think the QML version i.e. QGIS mobile (android) would be great for
this device.

I have got QGIS working on my Nexus S and the screen size and resolution
are the limiting factor with using QGIS on Android – Nexus S has a 4
inch screen with a resolution of 800x480.

I would really recommend a phone with a big screen (the Samsung Note has
one of the biggest) or a tablet – the Nexus 7 can be had for £159 for
the 8GB version and £199 for the 16GB version. That has a 7 inch screen
and with a resolution of 1280 x 800.

I agree that Javascript is useful language for web mapping. However,
Java has nothing to do with Javascript.

Find a book / tutorial about Javascript and jQuery

I totally agree with Alex.

You probably don't need a Web geoserver / mapserver,

You can use free available map services (e.g. Mapbox, Cloudmade,
OpenStreetMap (OSM), etc.)

Leaflet is very good in creating web mapping using Mapbox, cloudmade,
OpenStreetMap.

Have a look at this example.

Oggetto: Re: [Qgis-user] Smartphone suggestions for QGIS Mobile

I thank you for all those informations, but those very good smartphones
are very expensives, but right now I'm planning to buy a cheaper one (at least
€200): I need a mobile and I just would like to have an introduction on Mobile
GIS...

Please forgive me if I've been not clear enough, but in reality I need
informations about the kind of display, something like "capacitive display" Vs
"resistive display": I would like to know if
"capacitive" displays can be used with enough precision considering its
peculiari stilus... Does someone can share its experiences to address me and
other users?___
