Hi António, I can confirm also on Windows 7 (italian localization): the
issue is triggered by the name of the shapefile(s), not by the layer name.

Hi Richard,
this is a common issue on Linux trying to unpack zip archives created on
Windows. [1]

Maybe the reported issue is Windows specific.

It also happens with an empty attribute table. Moreover, if you copy the
working provided shapefile adding a non ASCII char to the copied shapefile
files name, the copied shapefile will not work when exporting the layout to
GeoPDF  including vector feature information.
If you remove the non ASCII char from the not working shapefile file names,
then the issue will not happen.
So it should not be related to the dbf encoding.

Good morning,

My name is Vladut Constandoiu, I'm a university student from Trento, Italy
and I'm using QGis for my master thesis.
Yesterday I had a very unpleasant experience with QGis. I have a shapefile
that contains all of the different areas of the river's hydrological basin
on which I'm doing my project; every element has two attributes: type
(TIPO) and area (SUP). Somehow I managed to erase those attributes from the
attribute table and could not do undo (ctrl+z or anything else) since the
auto-save plug-in activated exatly 2 seconds after  my mistake and saved
the changes. The shapefile contains about 6900 elements, and they were all
sorted by use, while now they are just areas without any information.
Is there any way to recover a previous version of that shapefile so that I
don't have to spend uncountable hours putting all the attributes back in?
Here are three pictures of my work, previously and after the loss of
information.

If you made changes to the tables and saved them then there is for me no 
obvious way to recover the information to its previous state.

Unless you had a backup of your original data which is always a good 
thing to have.

Not necessarily a good idea. There could be many elements with the same
area.

If it's the previous DBF why is it necessary to "join" anything - the
record IDs in the shape data and DBF should still connect.

Hey Vladut:

If you succeed in recovering the previous *dbf* file, you can join it again
to the recent damaged shapefile, by the common field of area, provided your
previous field SUP (area) was actually the area of the geometry elements.


Before joining, recalculate and/or round the area fields, in order to fix
them to the same and appropriate number of decimals (and, if necessary,
convert them to string),  so that you can assure exact matches.

This is a great idea if she is on Windows.
Right click on the folder and select previous versions.
Then just selectively drag and drop files from that
restored folder.

Backups - backups.  At home I have no fewer than
6 backups around me.  Even on the road I have 2 - 3
backups with me at all times.

So maybe it is more a 'data'-encoding problem then a QGIS issue?
I tested by creating a new shapefile named "Todas as Parcelas Áreas" and that 
one works fine.
So it's not the filename, but probably the faulty encoding (of the attributes 
in the dbf)?

I think (others please correct me if I am wrong) that IF you create a new 
shapefile it is best to create it as utf-8 or utf-16?

'The layer tree' is the 'Legend' or the 'Layers panel' (often to the left of 
the map).
When you load a shapefile the 'name' of the layer you get is... the name of the 
shapefile. The issue looks like when you create a pdf it cannot hold characters 
with diacritical's (?) in layernames apparently?
What you did (renaming the shape) is more or less the same :-) You removed the 
diacriticals from the layernames...

Please create an issue if you can, preferebly with a small example dataset. Let 
us know if this is a problem, then we can do it.

Windows has a feature called previous versions. Locate the shape files on
explorer, look for the dbf file, right click, properties and see if you
have any previous versions that you can restore.

I'm sorry, you have no chanches to recover deleted attributes.

You need to populate attributes again.

However, in my mind, this could be not a impossible job.

SUP (area) attribute is a geometry dependant value, you could calculate
areas again with a simple string in field calculator.

TIPO (Type) attribute is the real problem, but since I suppose you
extracted it from some public data source, maybe you could use field
calculator again for extract data in minutes.

Don't worry, these are common experiences that would drive you to a more
prudent jobs management.

Also hope you will adopt another file format (.gpkg is great) and leave
shapefiles.

If you made changes to the tables and saved them then there is for me no 
obvious way to recover the information to its previous state.


Unless you had a backup of your original data which is always a good 
thing to have.
