Do you open projects and data sources from untrusted people? If so
then it can be a security risk if you are opening a malicious data
file. If you trust the files and data sources then the risks are
minimal, although of course those people could be hacked so there's
always some unavoidable risk.

There's no harm in making a copy of your projects, upgrading QGIS, and
testing them out. If they break and you can't fix it, you can install
the old version and restore the project from the copy you made.

I've only been using QGIS for a little over a year now, and kept
regularly up to date. I've never had a problem with upgrades and even
going backwards in versions. Different versions have different
features and bug fixes but so far the likelihood of breaking my projects
seems pretty low. Of course I still keep backups just in case, because
there are many other things that can go wrong as well (hardware failure,
ransomware, etc.)

When security problems are discovered in popular programs like QGIS,
they are typically recorded in an online vulnerability database. You
can search this for your favourite programs to see how many
vulnerabilities there are and how old they are, then do your own
research to find out what version they were fixed in. The search for
QGIS shows no security issues found so far:

  https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=qgis

It doesn't mean there aren't any security flaws, just that nobody has
found any yet.

Often security issues will be in an obscure part of a program that you
are unlikely to use, so even if there are issues, they may not affect
you anyway. You'll have to read the details listed on the issue to find
that out.

Cheers,
Adam.

This article by Bentley indicates that their software (and who knows, maybe
other software) expects shapefile characters to be encoded as ISO8859-1.
They recommend resaving the layer with a changed encoding.

You could try this.

https://communities.bentley.com/products/hydraulics___hydrology/w/hydraulics_and_hydrology__wiki/37273/characters-in-a-shapefile-do-not-appear-correctly-in-the-modelbuilder-preview

There's also this "encoding fixer plugin"

https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/shapefile_encoding_fixer/

Here are some other people struggling with the same problem

https://www.reddit.com/r/QGIS/comments/y15m2a/problem_with_german_characters_in_an_attribute/

Maybe some of this will help.

Chris,

Your suggestion makes sense. The opening line of the index.html code
established UTF-8 as the code and which is now the same as the code for
the Q-GIS layer. And yet, the problem persists. To make matters more
complicated, the map has all the accents when opened from by computer,
but looses them once uploaded.

Thanks,

Sounds like one part of your environment is using say ISO8859

For example your data (in shape files) may be ISO8859 but QGIS may be

But that also gives an sensible explanation - or didn't that also happen to you
when using the color picker?

Otherwise that warning would make sense: QGIS needs to "look" outside it's own
window if you want to pick a color from elsewhere and macOS warns you about
that "recording", because it cannot tell whether the application did that
deliberately or upon your request.

That "screen recording" is related to color picking and mac in some tickets.
Eg.

https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/48030
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/51592

So I guess that's ok. But I've never seen it as I don't use a Mac.

[Qgis-user] Risk of security vulnerability using older version of QGis

2024-02-27 Thread Max via QGIS-User
Dear QGis Developer Community,

because I really hope for expert advice on the topic I eventually sent my
request on this list.

As a private and amateur end-user of QGis I would really like to know if not
running the latest version of QGis is a (serious) security risk for my Computer?

I am still using QGis 3.22.14 Bialowieza on my Apple MacBook M1 (which is
running the latest version of mac OS).

Because of concerns regarding the bug-less performance and compatibility of my
old project files (albeit potentially unjustified) and the inconvenience
resulting from a missing built in Update feature of QGis, I have not installed
the latest version of the program yet.

As I am quite new to Mac computers and (as many people convinced me it is not
necessary) I am not using extra anti-virus software, I have serious concerns if
an older version of QGis could be a security risk for my computer.

What made me turn to you and eventually write this email, hoping for advice,
was a system notification that was displayed today while working with QGis. The
notification asked me if I would like to grant QGis access to screen and system
audio recording. As I am really not sure which features of QGis could have
cause the request for access to screen and audio data, I‘m now seriously
concerned about mal-ware.

I couldn’t find anything useful about my concerns but obviously this has also
happened to other QGis users
(https://www.reddit.com/r/QGIS/comments/s1be86/why_did_qgis_ask_to_record_my_screen/)

I would be very thankful for some expert advice if this notification is normal
for QGis to ask for or if this should be cause for concern.
I would also really appreciate some general information on if (an in case, how)
using an older version of QGis could be a security risks.

Thank you very much in advance and best wishes
Max

GeoTIFF is a rather complex file format. It may contain some metadata
information like elevation data, but this is optional. If Google does not
export this information with the GeoTIFF, you are probably out of luck.

GeoTIFF is an image format, like PNG or JPEG. There is no device
information in .png or .jpg files, so there is no device information in
TIFF either.

If you want device information you will need to find some way of
exporting it. If you selected GeoTIFF then you are only exporting the
picture without any device information.

I have not used GNP so cannot offer advice on how to do this, either.

Cheers,
Adam.

Please, dont spam the list with multiple requests. I see you posted the
question already in the GNP forums (but targeting argcis). GeoTIFF will
neve contain more data than the image. The "Geo" part of geotiff provides
location / projection information. But will not carry additional data such
as shown in the web ui. You'll have to see of GNP has any api that lets you
query by location but I very much doubt they'll export the "best device
info" for all points as its just dumping all the data they have.

[Qgis-user] How QGIS handles on-the-fly projection?

2024-02-27 Thread Ionut Ungurianu via QGIS-User
Hi!

I’m looking to understand in a more advanced way how QGIS handles on-the-fly
projection.
In my case I set the project crs in epsg:3857 and I have a raster layer in
epsg:4326. In this case what is happening with the layer?

I know that it’s based on PROJ, but I’m wondering what is actually happening in
the back-end, what is happening in the map canvas, how is the layer render, is
being resampled every time you pan the map or do zoom in/out ...

So, if someone can help with a detailed explanation, I would really appreciate
it.

Thanks in advance!

All the best!
