[Qgis-user] Python error upon loading and in every project

2021-10-10 Thread David Addy
I have not needed to consult the QGIS users Mailing List for some time, but
after changing my computer I had an issue with loading 3.16.11 to the new
machine. Upon opening an existing project QGIS omitted to display the
thumbnails of recent projects and flagged an issue with Python. If anyone
can throw any light on how to fix this I would be very grateful.

Re: [Qgis-user] Does QGIS3 freezes more often than QGIS2 ?

2020-11-27 Thread David Addy
I used to get a lot of similar freezes on QGIS 3.
It was traced to the browser window being full of files that I never would
use for QGIS.
So if your browser window within QGIS has a lot of irrelevant stuff, you
could try clicking on each one and selecting, "Hide from Browser" option.
This should ensure that QGIS is not wasting time looking through a lot of
directories that you would never be using with QGIS anyway.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.10 not responding

2020-03-15 Thread David Addy
I used to have this problem but this now seems to have gone away, when a
solution was suggested on this forum.
The solution was that the browser panel was full of discs and files that
had nothing to do with QGIS.
Right click in the QGIS browser and select "Hide from browser" everything
that you do not need for a QGIS project. I removed my "C" disc and all the
USB connections.
This should speed things up.
It is worth a try with no down side.

[Qgis-user] Scalebar issues on QGIS 3.10.2

2020-02-13 Thread David Addy
I am making maps using OSGB36 which is 27700 CRS. My issue comes when I use
the Print Layout option.
In one case the Print Layout simply did not draw a scalebar, but left a pair
of dotted lines on the layout. So I left it out.
In another case the scalebar was drawn but the scale of kilometres was
apparently ten times what I expected. Where I expected a box showing 10 and
20 km, it gave 100 and 200 km.
I use the Windows 10 pre-built package and except for this issue QGIS
3.10.2 latest version works very well for me. I also use the latest OS
transformation as recommended by the system, which I had to download. I
wonder if this transform, which is said to be accurate to 1 metre (compared
to the old transform of 2 to 4 metre accuracy) is causing this issue.
Anybody else run into this, or have any suggestions or comments?

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.10.1A Geotiff Coordinate Transform Problem

2020-01-20 Thread David Addy
I just downloaded and opened the new QGIS version 3.10.2 and clicked on
Help/About which gives a list of all the installed bits and pieces.
This release of Version 3.10.2 will still probably be no good for transforms
as it still apparently includes the buggy PROJ 6.2.1 and GDAL 3.0.2.
I thought the whole reason for delaying this point release was to include
PROJ 6.3.0, released on January 1st and the GDAL version 3.0.3, released
early last week, on 13th January.
QGIS is usually such a great program, but at the moment it cannot cope with
WGS84 transforms so it cannot be trusted for now.

2020-01-19 Thread David Addy
I can confirm that if you use the Windows 10 package, then the CRS procedures
are completely full of bugs on point release 3.10.1. I get terminal issues
with the transform from WGS84 to OSGB 36, the standard National Grid here in
the UK.
Try the next point release 3.10.2 due any day now, which should have updated
versions of PROJ (6.3.0) and GDAL (3.0.2).

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.2 & 3 still very slow to work in Windows 10

2020-01-16 Thread David Addy
Many thanks to Micha Silver -2.
I have found that hiding directories from the browser has apparently stopped
all my issues with " Qgis not responding" hangups. I have got all my QGIS
projects on one hard drive so I have hidden everything but that drive,
including hiding the C drive.
Windows seems to create a "drive" every time you plug in a USB device, so I
have hidden all these as well.
I must admit that I had not noticed that hiding some directories was
possible, but thanks to Micha this seems to have solved this issue, and
speeded up opening QGIS as well.

2019-11-10 Thread David Addy
Just to update this issue. I am still getting slow start ups and qgis not
responding freeze ups just as bad on QGIS 3.8.3.
Every version since 3.4.1 have given these problems.
I have gone through all the files from old versions that I could find and
deleted them.
I have tried new profiles, disabling plug ins and removing the browser
panel.
I have tried turning off my Kaspersky security software.
None of these changes have made any significant difference.
I realise that only a few of us experience these issues, but there must be
an answer somewhere.

Re: [Qgis-user] Loss of scale after clipping

2019-10-24 Thread David Addy
Hi Nick,
I thought you were onto something with that suggestion of incompatible CRS
settings.
The coastal file that I had clipped came from a MapInfo source and the CRS
was interpreted by QGIS as a custom CRS rather than as EPSG 27700. Although
the MapInfo CRS was meant to be the GB National Grid.
So I changed its CRS to 27700 and clipped it again.
This loaded up fine and I got the correct scale in the box at the bottom of
the map window.
Thinking all was well I saved the project and closed it.
However, when I came to open it again this morning the map looked correct
but the scale had reverted to 0:1.
Now I am completely baffled.

Oh Dear, I have just tried to follow the tip from Nicolas above about
reloading files into a new empty project.
This time this does not work.
I have just loaded a county outline and a coastal line with default styling
and the scale bar still says 0:1.
Now What?
Any ideas?
Regards to all.
NB QGIS 3 would be really magic without all this stuff.

Re: [Qgis-user] Loss of scale after clipping

2019-10-21 Thread David Addy
This scale problem has just raised its head again in a different context.
I have been experiencing the 40 second loading time which a few other people
have also reported, ever since 3.4.1, when this all started.
In addition I often get QGIS not responding messages most often when
clicking on "Project" tab to do a save or whatever. I have got used to
waiting 20 seconds for it to become responsive again.
I have carried on just accepting these delays, and the occasional crash when
closing.
Last night it crashed when closing and today I can open the map but the
scale bar shows the dreaded 0:1 and it is impossible to change it.
I am on W10 with version 3.8.3 of QGIS, which I always load using the
standalone installer.
I have tried uninstalling every earlier QGIS versions, disabling all my
plugins, using a different profile, and none of these has had any effect
upon the slow loading speed etc.
I think all these symptoms are linked in some way, and I blame it all on
QGIS 3.4.1. Has it left something lurking somewhere?

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.4 still giving delays and “not responding” issues on Windows 10

2019-01-30 Thread David Addy
I did love using QGIS until 3.4.1 came along. Ever since I have been plagued
by the “Not responding” message and very slow start up. (See my previous
posts “QGIS 3.4.3 becoming unusable for me on Windows 10,” and “QGIS 3.4.2
still very slow to work in Windows 10”)
However, when it came to 3.4.4 it seemed at first to be back to normal
operations.
After downloading I opened it and it came up fast, just as hoped. Click
Project/Open recent/select from list, and it loads quickly with no issues. I
could open the attribute table fast as you like, and the program is
responding well.
To close it I click Project/New Project and it clears away just as it
should.
I click Project/Open recent/and select a second project from the list. Once
again everything works as it should, and cleared by Project/New Project as
before.
Thinking that everything was working fine I repeated this procedure, and it
all worked until I want to move to a new project. This time, although I had
not amended the map, except for panning around and checking the styles etc,
when I clicked on Project/New project, I got the message Do you want to save
or discard the project.
I clicked on Discard, and QGIS seemed to pause. It was reluctant to close,
and also paused when I clicked on the X to close the whole window. This
Discard process seems to have caused all future operations to become
problematic.
After that, every time I try to use it, it was back to taking 30 seconds to
open a new QGIS window and everything slowed right down again, with Not
responding messages.
On my next project , after the long delay in opening, I assembled my layers
and loaded them, and added a style or two. This time I closed by
Project/Save as/newname, and attempted to close the project by clicking on
the X in the top right. I then got a Crash message. All comments welcome.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.3 becoming unusable for me on Windows 10

2019-01-09 Thread David Addy
Thanks for the advice fellas.
Unfortunately being an end user, I never usually delve into the guts of
QGIS.
Advice received is : "Can you try to start QGIS with the following options:

qgis --noversioncheck --noplugins --hide-browser "

I have discovered the option to 'Check version no on startup' and unchecked
it.
But how do I stop all the plug ins from Loading? I cannot find any 'disable
all plugins' button.
Neither can I see how to hide the browser.
Any advice on where to find these options would be welcome.
Sorry if this is very basic stuff but I have never had to worry about these
options in versions of 3.4.0 and earlier.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.3 becoming unusable for me on Windows 10

2019-01-08 Thread David Addy
Ever since release 3.4.1 QGIS has been a disaster for me, running on Windows
10.
After I upgraded to 3.4.2 I still had problems with everything running very
slowly. (See my post below -
QGIS 3.4.2 still very slow to work in Windows 10 by David Addy)

Now on 3.4.3 the same issues seem to be continuing, with the odd crash added
in for good measure.
Opening QGIS on Windows 10 always takes over half a minute before anything
happens apart from the outline box of the QGIS window full of blank space.
Once a project finally loads up any random operation gets the "QGIS not
responding" message.
I can scan a map without any problem, moving it around works fine, as does
zooming in and out. But if I want to amend the contents of the attribute
table or change a style in the Layer Properties I get “QGIS is not
responding”. After a long delay it may respond correctly.
This can result in further issues because I may try pressing buttons to get
a response. After long frustration it might decide to crash.
I use the stand -alone version of 64 bit Windows package, which loads with
QT 5.11.2.
I run a 16 gb computer with Intel i7 processor. It seems to make no
difference whether I have my Kaspersky Security Suite turned on or off.
Frustratingly, some other users apparently experience no problems with
Windows on QGIS.
Ubuntu users are ecstatic – they work lovely.
If you are on Windows 10 and are still having these sort of issues on QGIS
3.4.3 it would be very helpful if you could add a note to this thread so we
can gauge the numbers involved. Useful also if you can note whether you use
the standalone package, 64 or 32 bit, and the QT package installed.
Thanks very much.

Sorry to complain, but I just cannot bear to run any work at the moment.

Hi Nyall,
In answer to your query, all my files are held on my desktop PC, with specs
as follows:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K

SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB

I also run Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.

Unfortunately, although opening QGIS with a blank project had speeded up the
load process yesterday, today it is still taking half a minute to go from an
empty outline window to the normal QGIS screen. In the light of other
comments I tried unchecking the Processing plugin, but there was no
noticeable improvement. This is all very strange.

to a minute to open itself and load the project. Other saves and actions
like opening a layer attribute table were also very slow.
After changing my settings to open with a new project (ie a blank project)
QGIS was opening as normal. Then loading the old project also was as fast as
it should be.
However, after editing some polygons, when I come to save the changes I am
still getting a long pause when nothing happens, then I get "QGIS is not
responding", then it comes back to life again and finishes the save.
So changing the setting vastly improved startup, but seems to have not
solved the whole problem.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.2 still very slow to work in Windows 10

2018-12-15 Thread David Addy
Thanks to everybody, but to Anita and Nyall in particular, for your comments.
It is very helpful to know that my issues are just minor quirks rather than
a more serious flaw.
QGIS 3 is definitely a big leap forward and I can now plough onwards with
these reassurances.
I would rather avoid going to a VM at the moment as that will undoubtedly
saddle me with a few more issues.
My learning skills are not what they used to be, (age 70 this month) so
"keep it simple" is my motto.
Thanks again!!

2018-12-13 Thread David Addy
Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your comments. It all helps to encourage me.
I have now discovered that the User Manual (development version) emphasises
the fact that there are changes to the node tool in version 3, and how the
dragging of the old method is now replaced by two clicks. Anita's book does
not mention this, so I was still trying to move a node in the "old way".
Like you I do not want to go back to 2.18, and I believe in learning the new
workflows of version 3 ASAP.
So now I have edited my polygons, but when I come to save the changes I am
still getting a long pause when nothing happens, then I get "QGIS is not
responding", then it comes back to life again and finishes the save.
It must still be an issue with the latest QT 5.11.2, n'est ce pas?
I have had a look at the QT website and I note that there are a few users
complaining about unfixed bugs that go back for ages.

Thanks for all your comments. I think things were pretty good using 3.2, and
I had got used to using Version 3 with geopackage etc, and going back to
2.18 was rather painful for me. These hanging up problems for me really
started in 3.4.
I have just found that changing my Settings to make QGIS start up with a new
project, (rather than loading the last project worked on) seems to be a lot
faster to open this way.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.2 still very slow to work in Windows 10

2018-12-10 Thread David Addy
I have always loved QGIS and I have extolled its virtues to local historians
and archaeologists in my area.
I have had to keep quiet about it lately.
I was somewhat relieved to hear a comment on a recent video of the Oceania
meeting that QGIS 3.4.1 was a dud release as it caused Windows to crash at
random moments. I had thought that all the long pauses, messages of QGIS not
responding, and crashing when being closed down was some awful feature
unique to my computer. I had even tried reverting to 2.18 for a while.
However, after I upgraded to 3.4.2 I still had problems.
Opening QGIS on Windows 10 can take over half a minute before anything
happens apart from the outline box of the QGIS window full of blank space.
Once a project finally loads up any random operation can still get the "QGIS
not responding" message.
This can result in further issues because I try pressing buttons to get a
response.
I even bought Anita's 4th edition of "Learn QGIS" to see if I was doing
something radically wrong. It did highlight a few wrinkles until I got to
page 55 when I discovered instructions on the edit node tool. This tool I
had used OK in the past, but it now baffles me totally. I cannot get it to
do what the book says.
I am now losing my confidence in 3.4.2 and can only hope that the next point
release will produce improvements.
It would really help if known major issues like this could be posted here,
perhaps as a sticky which stays at the top, to let users know that they are
not alone with an issue.
Sorry to complain.

2018-05-25 Thread David Addy
I have upgraded to 3.0.3 and tried to clip another file. Oh Joy! It worked.
However I was a bit disconcerted by the GDAL readout at the bottom of the
box which described output to a temp file even though I had specified a new
filename and location. However, the new file name was actually applied.
Here is the dialogue box. You can see that the GDAL commands no longer
contain all the double slashes of previous.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3 clipping raster with a polygon - problem

2018-05-24 Thread David Addy
Hi Nyall,
Thanks very much for looking at this.
The two versions are as follows:

From QGIS 2.18.16 I get:
gdalwarp -q -cutline "D:/My Pictures/QGIS Projects/Payne
calibration/payne_clipper.shp" -tr 0.639640252898 0.639640252898 -of GTiff
"D:/My Pictures/QGIS Projects/Payne calibration/payne_modified.tif" "D:/My
Pictures/QGIS Projects/Payne calibration/p_clipped_Q2A.tif"

From QGIS 3.0.2 I get :
gdalwarp -ot Float32 -of GTiff -cutline path_to_data_file -crop_to_cutline
-dstnodata 0.0 "D:\\My Pictures\\QGIS Projects\\Payne
calibration\\payne_modified.tif"
C:/Users/DJAddy/AppData/Local/Temp/processing_fd479b6503d44fbcb53887e62e4cf315/f36463c35cc34f29b240d30ad811d6fd/OUTPUT.tif

The output file in Q3 is a temp file as I forgot to browse to the same name
as above. "Payne modified" is my calibrated input file, and "payneclipper"
is my polygon clipping mask. The algorithms look quite different but I do
not know enough to know what is wrong.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3 clipping raster with a polygon - problem

2018-05-23 Thread David Addy
I have had another go with another dataset.
I have tried both these algorithms in QGIS 3.0.2:
1. Gdal ->" Raster extraction" -> "Clip raster by mask layer"
2. Saga -> "Vector <-> raster" -> "Clip raster with polygon"
Both give an error message.
In the case of GDAL it is :"GDAL command output:
ERROR 6: SetColorTable() only supported for Byte or UInt16 bands in TIFF
format."
I must be completely misunderstanding both these processes.
By reverting to QGIS 2.18.16 the GDAL algorithm works quite happily on the
same geotiff using the same shp file polygon to clip it..
In Q3 I do not understand why the output file entry box is labelled
Clipped(mask) and the box contains (save to temporary file)
Are there some other entries I need to make it work?

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3 clipping raster with a polygon - problem

2018-05-20 Thread David Addy
I have always been able to clip a raster using the mask made by drawing a
polygon around the required area in QGIS 2. However, in QGIS 3 the process
does not work the same way. I cannot figure out how to make a new output
file, and whatever I try results in no comprehensible output.
I have just successfully made a clipped geotiff using 2.18.16, but it would
be better to be able to do it just as easily in Q3.
Can anyone explain what is going on with Raster-Extract-Clipper in Q3?

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3 initial settings from QGIS 2

2018-02-28 Thread David Addy
I was pleased to download QGIS3 last night, and I clicked on the option to
include my existing settings from QGIS2.
However, when opening Q3 it seemed to be in the full naked default
situation. There were no "Recent Projects" and my local CRS was not set to
OSGB 36. The CRS is easily corrected of course, but is there any way to get
back "Recent Projects" and whatever else I had previously set up in QGIS 2?
Any advice welcome.
Best wishes to all, and I can't wait to get into Q3 properly.

[Qgis-user] Plea for help with monochrome maps for publication

2016-11-11 Thread David Addy
Most of us prepare our maps using colours for different outlines or different
colour shades of fill for polygons. However, there are still occasions where
maps produced for publication in books or magazines will end up as shades of
grey to save the cost of colour printing. This is certainly the case for
most of the local history texts for which I am often asked to make maps.
This can result in greys which are fairly indistinguishable from each other,
and traditionally this issue was approached by adding hatchings to the
‘colour’. This could end up as looking a mess and/or failing to adequately
highlight an area of highest activity in distribution maps.
Has anybody got any experience of, or advice for, successfully solving the
problem of making monochrome maps look more attractive and useful?

Re: [Qgis-user] Bug in Map Composer?

2016-07-22 Thread David Addy
This sounds just like an issue I had some time ago with scaled visibilities.
In order for the map in the main screen to fit into the specified paper size
in the Map Composer you want to see exactly the same extent as on the main
display.
But, of course, Map Composer has to fit it all into the specified paper
size.
Thus it changes the scale to fit on to the paper. Say from 1:10,000 to
1:12,000.
This means that visible layers or styles may suddenly disappear if the
visibility threshold is crossed.
You need to take this into account, and if necessary, just change the scale
at which your layer or style appears or disappears.
It seems to me that this is not a bug, but a necessary way to get your map
on to paper.
I hope this helps,
Best wishes

I see that Alexandre cannot reproduce this issue.
However, I am now using QGIS 2.12.3 and for me, on Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit,

The issue of 'IS NOT NULL' still produces the reverse incorrect results when

Re: [Qgis-user] GDAL/OGR 2.0 in OSGeo4W

This is good news indeed for all UK local authorities who use MapInfo. Will
we now be able to use the extra commands of “TAB_APPROX_GEOTRANSFORM YES”
for all those slightly dodgy tab with tiff files created over the years?
Although we can use QGIS to convert these into Geotiffs, it is much more
user friendly to be able to read existing MapInfo tiffs with tabs without
such a need for a conversion.
Bo Victor put in an enhancement request for this feature a year ago.

Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions and ideas.
I have tried deleting the "no filter" rule, as suggested, but it makes no

I have also tried both the 'Add rule' buttons and the 'Amend rule ' button

I have used the 'Amend Rule' on the "no filter" line so as to eliminate the

[Qgis-user] Rule based styling issue

2015-10-01 Thread David Addy
I have a query about the use of Rule based styles.
I have a layer of parishes within a county area, which is styled with a
transparent fill. Below it I have a copy layer of the same data.
In both layers the attribute table has a column headed WAPENTAKE, which
holds string data of 25 characters wide. Some of the fields contain a
wapentake name, and the remainder contain NULL.
I want the copy layer to display a certain style when the wapentake contains
a name, but nothing when the column wapentake contains NULL.

Now comes the problem. If I set the copy layer to a rule based style so that
it will display a coloured shading where there is data in the field
WAPENTAKE, I expect to use the filter of "WAPENTAKE" IS NOT NULL.
This works correctly if I double click on the filter section in the Style
window, and manually edit the filter to this expression.
If instead I open the ellepsis button (...) in order to use the Expression
builder to build the same expression, the result is the reverse of what I
want. IE those with NULL content now show the selected style, and those
that have names in the column show no style.
Can anybody shed light on this issue please? What I am I doing wrong?

(I am using QGIS 2.8.3 under Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit)

[Qgis-user] Problem styling OS Mastermap

2014-02-14 Thread David Addy
I have been trying to load and view the sample of OS Mastermap provided on
the OS website.
Although I can load it successfully into QGIS 2.0.1, under Windows 7 Pro, I
cannot get any of the published styles to work.
I have tried the OS provided style, and the Warwickshire County Council
styles from GIThub. I have also tried converting the .gml/.gz files into
.shp using the OS converter experimental plugin, and applying the
Warwickshire styles again.
At each time the initial files load into the QGIS Mapview pane. I then try
loading the style files, and these appear properly in the Map Legend pane,
but the Mapview pane goes completely blank, with a white background. However
the cursor is still displaying the correct coordinates in the status bar,
despite the blank map.
Unchecking all but one of the layers has no effect, and changing the layer
order also has no effect.
Can anyone please suggest where I am going wrong?

[Qgis-user] Problem correctly reading Mapinfo TIF and TAB files into QGIS

2013-12-27 Thread David Addy
In this area of the UK, a number of local authorities use Mapinfo for their
Archaeology and Record Office services. This often involves reading
historical maps in order to compare with current conditions on the ground.
All such maps are calibrated within Mapinfo, and are usually in the form of
.TIF files accompanied by a .TAB file giving the georeferencing data. As
these departments are constantly under budgetary pressure there are many
applications where the use of QGIS could result in considerable cost
savings. However, it is necessary that existing maps should be easily read
by QGIS and correctly located,
without a cumbersome file conversion process.
An example of such maps is the 1880s First Series 1:2500 scale county
Ordnance Survey maps for Suffolk. At this scale it takes a large number of
tiles to cover a whole county. In a sample dozen of such maps around Bury St
Edmunds, only four were correctly located by QGIS. My mapping friend Nick
Hopton has kindly addressed this problem to the GDAL forum, using two sample
tiles, one of which works in QGIS and the other does not. The discussion on
this is reproduced below, and appears to come down to the size of the error
found by GDAL in its attempted transformation. AS this error seems to be
acceptable within Mapinfo, I do not quite understand why it cannot work
equally well within QGIS.
Obviously this must be a critical issue for all Mapinfo users who would like
to adopt QGIS, but find that this problem causes their evaluations to fail
at the first hurdle. Like myself, these users are not experts in the
technical details of map projections, nor the problems of making pre-1936
maps fit within today's UK Ordnance Survey OSGB36 Grid References.
However, we need to know whether anyone knows how to persuade QGIS/GDAL to
locate these tiles in the correct place please?

PROBLEM PREVIOUSLY ADDRESSED TO GDAL FORUM:

A friend, a relative newcomer to GIS, is having problems loading some of the
TIFs created with Mapinfo into QGIS. Each TIF has a TAB file and in some
cases the TAB file is interpreted correctly and in other cases the TAB file
is (apparently) not recognised.
I think this might be a problem with Gdal rather than a problem with QGIS.
Taking just two of the TIFs, the output from gdalinfo when run on
33044061.TIF indicates that things are working as they should. However, when
gdalinfo is run on 33044071.TIF the spatial data in its TAB file is not
recognised. See the listings below.

The strange thing is that all of the TIFs can successfully be converted from
TIF to GeoTIFF using gdalwarp. (But it is important to my friend that he
should be able to open Mapinfo raster images directly.)

Any ideas?

Regards,
Nick.
