[Qgis-user] Atlas wont export a table when there are too few records

2016-09-20 Thread James Stott
Hi,

I have a composer and I use the atlas functionality to create PDFs. I have
point features, and these are contained within different zones. I use atlas
to create a map of each zone.

The layout is 2 pages, the first page is the map, the 2nd page is a table,
made up of 5 frames so I have space for around 250 features in the table.

The table displays correctly when I preview the composers in QGIS, but when
I try to export to PDF, it refuses to export some of the pages with the
tables on (about 5 out of 20 zones). It seems like the pages it wont export
are where there is under a certain number of points within the atlas
feature.

I can get around this if I make the frames smaller in height, but then I
cant get all the features in the table for some of my zones.

Is anyone else getting this problem? I cant share my actual data, and I
dont have time at the moment to see if this happens with other random data.
I can try to recreate next week, but just wondered if anyone else is
struggling with this problem too.

James

[Qgis-user] Create a polygon of a certain area

2012-11-06 Thread James Stott
Hi all,

Does anyone know of a method to quickly create a polygon (square or
circle) that is of a given size (I want a polygon of say 12 hectares)
and the plugin or whatever works out the length the sides of the square
need to be to make the polygon 12 hectares)?

Many thanks,

James

Copy and paste styles between layers is a cool thing - I often save a
subset of a larger shape file and like to adapt the symbology from the
major shape file to the subset and copy paste is very easy.

But to make the paste procedure work I have to do this after pasting:
* Open layer properties
* Clicking the Apply button

Anybody else experience this?

Not a big issue but probably an easy thing to fix in next version?

[Qgis-user] Customisation Menu

2012-09-24 Thread James Stott
Hi all,

There is a user on GIS stackexchange who wants to be able to remove all
of the menus. I suggested they use the Settings Customisation dialog
to do this.

They have noticed that there is not the option to remove the following
menus:

Vector
Database
Web

I have also noticed that Analysis cannot be selected from the
customisation dialog too.

Is it able to turn this menus off somehow through the gui?

That would be great if you could release it if you manage to work
something out.

It must be a lot easier to get the point styles sorted as SVG files or
just a QGIS styles. I may try and create the point symbol ones in QGIS
anyway without using the SVGs for them.

Hi James,

Yes, that's the general consensus I've had from the off-list replies so
far. However, having now played around with some generously supplied
symbols, I'm not convinced QGIS could symbolise them neatly anyway
without tweaking the SVG itself (i.e. there's no way to specify distance
between symbols for instance).

I'm going to see if I can come up with something anyway and release it
back to the community to augment Lutra's releases (I'm using different
columns).

Thanks though,

Jonathan

Hi List,

I'm trying to symbolise Ordnance Survey MasterMap. The OS are nice
enough to provide a single SVG file (here:
https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/xml/resource/OSMasterMapStyles.svg)
with most/all of their symbology in.

My question is simple: How do I use these symbols in QGIS?

I've found SVG fill, which is the one I'm trying to use (i.e., with
nonconiferousTreesAndConiferousTreesPattern) and while it does allow
me to specify the SVG file, that seems to be all I can do. QGIS seems to
assume that the entire contents of the file should be used for styling,
while the file has multiple stylings in.

I'm guessing mutliple geometries in a single file is valid SVG (it
passes the WGC validator), so is this something QGIS can handle, or will
I need to source split files?

Thanks,

Jonathan

 James,

I'm using suds in my plugin on windows 7 64bits.

The problem as you mention it, is how to include it in your plugin.
For my self I didn't bother because I made a setup.exe that install
suds and the plugin where they need to be.

I suppose you can copy it in your plugin dir and do something like:
 from my_plugin import suds
 suds.blabla

 It should work.

[Qgis-user] Problem with adding a PostGIS query using Python

2012-06-27 Thread James Stott
I cannot seem to get this query to work. The python code I am using is:

db_conn = dbname=database' host=SERVER port=5432
user='postgres' password=''
id_field = gid
table=(SELECT * FROM \designations\.\table\ WHERE
ST_DWithin(ST_GeomFromText('POINT(451583 129144)',27700),
\table\.\geom\, 2000))
uri = %s key=%s table=%s (geom) sql= %
(db_conn,id_field,table,)
layer = QgsVectorLayer(uri, testlayer, postgres)
QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().addMapLayer(layer)

QGIS keeps telling me the following:

Unable to access the (SELECT relation. The error message from the
database was: ERROR: relation (SELECT does not exist LINE 1: SELECT *
FROM (SELECT LIMIT 1

It's almost as if something is automatically putting another SELECT
statement in front of my SELECT statement.

I can get this query to load using the DB manager plugin SQL window.

I have read this article and it still errors.

http://www.carsonfarmer.com/?p=713

Does anyone know why this doesn't work?

Using QGIS 1.8 on Windows 7 64bit, data is in a PostGIS 2.0 database.

[Qgis-user] Updating composer label text

2012-06-21 Thread James Stott
I am writing a plugin that replaces the text of a composer label based
on its itemID.

When I try to change the text of the label using:

item.setText(Hello World)

The label changes on the composer but the text in the Item Properties
panel for the label doesn't, it stays as what it was originally.

If I call item.displayText() before and after I change the label text
this returns the correct information.

How do I get the text to change in the Item Properties panel? Using qgis
1.8.

You can still do that by selecting singleband gray, and choose the default
 contrast enhancement in the options.

This just turns the raster into 1 gray colour: 127, 127, 127

can you share a bit sample of your raster?

Technically I don’t think I supposed to share the data as it is Ordnance Survey

I have compared the project file code for both the layer that works and
the layer that doesn't and I have found differences in the

works - it only exists for the layer that I copied the style for.
Removing it makes the layer show on the map.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Query Layer / Rule Based Rendering Problem

I have created a query in the DB Manager SQL Window (data is in a
PostGIS database). The query is then added to the map as a layer.

I copy the style from another layer (rule based style), paste it to my
query layer and the polygons disappear from the map and QGIS gives a
nextFeature() without select() error. This also happens if I apply a qml
style file to the layer.

If I change the styles back to Single Symbol they do not come back. I
can see the records in the Attribute table, and I can select them and
zoom to them on the map, I just cannot see them.

I have to re-add the query layer using the DB Manager SQL window again.

It only seems to be the polygon layers that cause problems at the
moment.

Does anyone know the cause of this?

[Qgis-user] Save as... CSV Error

2012-05-25 Thread James Stott
Before I file a bug report, just wanted to check whether others have
experienced this.

Steps to reproduce

1) Save a layer to csv using right click menu Save As.. or Layer menu
Save As...
2) Open this csv
3) Save another csv

When I try and save the 2nd csv, QGIS errors with the following message:

Export to vector file failed.
Error: creation of data source failed (OGR error:Failed to open
C:/Users/username/Desktop/tmp\LMA_Ramsar.csv, No error.)

The CSV file listed in the error is the csv that I have previously saved
and then opened. If I close this csv QGIS does not error.

[Qgis-user] Raster Layers obscuring other layers using master

2012-05-03 Thread James Stott
Hi all,

Is anyone else getting strange behaviour with Raster Layers?

I have had a few instances this morning where raster layers added to a
project do not show vector data or other raster data above them. However
the labels from the vector layers are drawing above the raster layer.

In my current project, the vrt I have added of tifs is working fine, but
the tif file I have added does not.

I am using QGIS master.

Someone can test if this issue affects also the code freezed for 1.8?
If yes please file a ticket and -as it is a regression- tag it as

RE: [Qgis-user] PostGIS query running in 1.7.4 but not 1.9

2012-04-27 Thread James Stott
Hi Salvatore,

I think that has just appeared from my editing the table names for including
the query in this email.

DB manager will execute the query and give me the results in the Result
section, it just won't add it to the map in 1.9. It will add it to the map in
1.7.4. If I save the project in 1.7.4 with the query in it, it will not open in
1.9.

I think I have worked it out. The query returns the same polygon multiple
times, and as such the gid column isn’t unique for each record. I guess I just
need to only return each polygon once for QGIS to be able to use the query
layer.

[Qgis-user] Saved styles and legends

2012-03-21 Thread James Stott
Hi all,

I have a categorised and a rule based style set up for a dataset. I
would like to apply these to another dataset but my 2nd dataset does not
contain all of the things that are in the first dataset.

Is it possible to only show the items that appear in a dataset in the
legend on a composer when you have applied saved style to the dataset?
Or do I have to go through and manually delete them all (I can select
show feature count on the layer so I know which items I do not need).

I would like to keep the other styles applied to the layer just in case
some of the other types are added to the map, just not to show them on
the legend on the composer.

[Qgis-user] Plugin to add a layer for each unique value in a column

2012-03-15 Thread James Stott
I would like to add a layer for each unique value of a text column in a
table.

For example, if I have a column called type, and the values in it were
tree, stone and plant I would like to add a layer for each type. So in
this example I would have 3 layers.

I know there is a plugin called Shapefile Splitter that splits out to a
shapefile for each unique value, but I just want it to split to layers
in QGIS.

Thanks for the reply. This is the approach I am using at the moment.

I was hoping to find a tool that did it in a more automated fashion, as my data
would require me to add the layer 20 times, and query each of these 20 layers.

RE: [Qgis-user] Plugin to add a layer for each unique value in acolumn

2012-03-15 Thread James Stott
Hi Nathan/Andreas,

I would happily use another method to deal with this but I haven’t managed to
come up with one.

My layer has site boundaries (20 of them) on it. I also have a layer with
buffers for my sites in it. I have a buffer per site (20 sites) and these are
from a PostGIS view as these alter whenever I change the site boundary. I would
like to then add each site boundary and each buffer onto a map as a separate
layer because:

1) I add the site boundary and the buffer to a group, then the users can then
turn each one on and off as needed when looking at the project file in QGIS.

2) For map production (using composers) I have a composer per site. I lock the
layers in the composer map item and then jpg all my maps at the end. To do this
I need to have each buffer on a separate layer as otherwise it would show the
other sites as they are quite close together.

The only way I can think to do this at the moment is to add each layer 20
times, and then query it by each individual site.

RE: [Qgis-user] Plugin to add a layer for each unique value in acolumn

2012-03-15 Thread James Stott
I may have a look at seeing if I can use the shapefile splitter plugin and
change it so it adds the layers as queries to the QGIS map canvas rather than
saving out shapefiles.

How would you add a selection of an existing layer as a new layer to the map
using python(without saving the selection to a file and then adding that files
to the map)? The spatial query plugin seems to do this but I cannot find the
code to see how it does it.

Ok - so it seems like a reporting / map production problem.

I am not sure if the EasyPrint or Atlas Plugin can help. EasyPrint
allows to print each feature on a separate map. But it sounds like for
your problem easy print would have to be extended to allow for maps per
filter or using a group attribute.

I am not sure if there is an out of the box solution for your problem
 with QGIS.

For my own similar projects I set up a printing process using Apache
FOP with XSL-FO and then use QGIS-server to print the map extents. I
understand that this would be overkill/too much work to setup for you.

[Qgis-user] Custom Projection for EPSG 27700 when opening shp and TAB files from other software

2012-03-14 Thread James Stott
I just wanted to check that this was working ok (using QGIS 1.9 Master).
I am a little confused by the different results I get from different
data.

The definition of a layer in QGIS using OSGB 1936 / British National
Grid (27700) is:

+proj=tmerc +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-2 +k=0.9996012717 +x_0=40 +y_0=-10
+ellps=airy +towgs84=446.448,-125.157,542.06,0.15,0.247,0.842,-20.489
+units=m +no_defs

I have data in MapInfo TAB files that are created in software other than
QGIS. When I open these they come in with the following custom
projection defined which is different from EPSG 27700 and as such not
recognised as it:

+proj=tmerc +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-2 +k=0.9996012717 +x_0=40 +y_0=-10
+ellps=airy +towgs84=375,-111,431,-0,-0,-0,0 +units=m +no_defs

I have data in a shapefile format not created by QGIS. When loaded into
QGIS these have the projection defined as a custom projection as shown
below which seems to match the EPSG 27700 definition but does not get
recognised as 27700:

+proj=tmerc +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-2 +k=0.9996012716 +x_0=40 +y_0=-10
+ellps=airy
+towgs84=446.448,-125.157,542.06,0.1502,0.247,0.8421,-20.4894 +units=m
+no_defs

Is this the correct behaviour and are all the custom projections giving
me the correct results?

James

crazy with epsg:3763 and others projected CRSs. Seems fine with WGS85.

Cheers

My point is I think something has gone strange with EPSG 27700 in QGIS
at the moment. It works fine on 1.7.1 and not on the OSGeo4W
1.8.0-120. It never used to set the units to degrees – it should be
 metres.

I think that QGIS is getting the default units wrong for 27700. The
coordinate system definition states that the units should be m.

I am also reporting this behaviour on my windows computer at home
(completely separate to the computers we have the issue on at work)
and a computer using Ubuntu 11.10. And on a windows machine on
 (1.8.0-78) it works fine.

I have also noticed a change in the behaviour of Save As... When
exporting to MapInfo MIF. Previously QGIS was getting the export wrong
and using BNG with WGS84, now it is exporting it to BNG with OSGB36
 (which is correct).

 so did you understand why?

lat lon is not an equidistant coordinate system. It is an angular
measure. The graticules merge closer togehter the further north they
 go.

When you overlay data projected to ll onto a flat surface the lengths
east west at the top are shorter than the lengths east west at the
 bottom.

that is what is changing the scale because without zooming the scale
of the objects would change by panning the map north and south.

Nothng about the scale is changing except the distance measured
 across. No coordinate values.

I am thinking rather than that it is just the fact that when you use
degrees, moving in the map would give you a different scale.

Because every time you move north or south you have changed the length
 of the x distance.

If you pan left and right (very carefully) do you see the scale not
 change?

I am using QGIS-Trunk under ubuntu 10.04. The canvas projection is set
to 27700 and Layer unit to metre.

The scale seems to be fine and not affected by panning.

1:2934133484 and so on. Distance measures seem unaffected. It seems to
be being caused by the units of the project being set to degrees. I
have saved a project and the units are set to degrees. If I open an
old project up it opens at the correct scale. In my old project files
it is set to metres. (see examples below). It seems I have to make
sure Enable on the fly projection is unticked in the project
properties, and then manually set the Layer units to metres in the
 general tab.

I was also having problems a while ago with exporting to MapInfo but I
have just tried this and it works. See links below for details. It is
including the 79 not the 104 now.

 Hi all,

I am having problems with scales on v1.8 (7297b23) from OSGeo4W.

If I open an existing project everything is fine.

If I open data in a fresh QGIS session it is reporting strange scales.
It doesn’t matter what source the data is. For example, I open a
dataset and it reports 1:784735546. It seems to report correct
distances. If I pan the scale changes.

I am using EPSG 27700 (British National Grid).

Does anyone have any idea what can be causing this?

feature allows to import/copy any vector layer QGis can load between
different datasources, i.e. PostGIS/SpatiaLite databases and OGR files.
It's available through the QgsVectorLayerImport class and it has just been
 merged in master branch.
See [1] for an example of use.
Faunalia is committed to support the development of this tool, and other DB
plugin developers are welcome to join and merge their work, it this makes
sense, to reduce confusion for users.
 Enjoy.
