 Google Groups works very well for the MapInfo forum, MapInfo-L, and
 the FME forum FME Talk. I am a member of both. Every participant can

 The closure is a done deal I suppose but I think it will be harmful
 to QGIS. Forum users are now being pointed to Stack Exchange but many
 of them will, I believe, take one look at Stack Exchange and run a
 mile. The Stack Exchange GIS FAQ makes it quite clear that SE is
 intended for ...cartographers, database administrators, geographers,
 programmers, and anyone interested in or using GIS professionally.

 I don't fit into any one of these categories, nor I think would many
 of the people who used to post on the forum. They tended to be
 newcomers to QGIS, or people who make maps and use GIS as just a part
 of their job, or as part of a recreational activity, or any
 combination of the three. Some of them will be young and engaged in
 things like school projects. It would be nice to think that these
 people will shift to SE, but I can't see this happening. But we'll
 soon be able to tell, if things work as hoped a lot of newby-type
 questions should soon start appearing on SE. It will be interesting
 to see the responses.

[Qgis-user] DTclassifier is released

2011-07-27 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Hi all,

To follow up on our demonstration in Lisbon.

We are happy to release our new plugin for streamlined remote sensing
dataclassificationinQGIS[0].  Initially the plugin was
developed to provide easy to use tool to monitor forest cover
change, but it can be used to classify any type of targets.

Main features:
- all-in-one, with this plugin only QGIS is needed for all steps of
classification;
- decision trees, the plugin is using computer vision library OpenCV to
implement modern classification algorithm typically not available in
other software packages (both OS and proprietory);
- performance, another nice feature of OpenCV is that it is
very fast;
- multiple input rasters and multiple training layers;

Description, examples and sample data:
EN: http://gis-lab.info/qa/dtclassifier-eng.html
RU: http://gis-lab.info/qa/dtclassifier.html

Right now the windows binaries and source code are available.

[Qgis-user] CSWclient is available

2010-10-18 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Hi all,

we're pleased to announce availability of CSWclient plugin from
GIS-Lab repo. CSWclient is a tool that makes easier work with Catalogue
Services. It allows to browse through and access non-spatial and
spatial data. CSWclient is inspired by proof-of-concept qgCSW plugin.

Some more functions:
- server management functionality (add new, edit or delete existing servers
from list);
- ability to save and load servers from exchange file;
- user-friendly displaying server and record metadata
- search by keywords (single keyword or comma-separated list);
- grabbing Bbox from map canvas or enter it by hand;
- option to setup number of records to return;
- user-friendly displaying for search results;
- navigation through search results (first, last, prev, next);
- Open URL button for records with downloadableData type (If there
is an URL in record metadata user can open this URL in the default browser)
- Add to WMS list button for records with liveData type. If there
is an URL in record metadata user can try to add this URL to the QGIS WMS
servers list.
- OWSLib included in plugin sources, so there is no dependencies;

CSWclient plugin is at the experimental stage and all kinds of comments are
welcome.

Re: [Qgis-user] RE: Shapefile structure viewer and editor plugin

2010-08-26 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Benoit,

thanks for very useful plugin, I've started developing something like
this sometime ago, glad I didn't go very far! My idea was to replicate
Arcview GIS 'shape properties' tool that I missed a lot. Let me give
several comment to consider adding to your plugin to make it even
more useful (IMHO of course):

1. Please consider working (or showing) only selected feature(s). It is not of
much
use if there are many polygons with many vertexes, you have to scroll
updown a lot to find needed feature. I can still see that seeing
everythig is useful when you're working with empty layer (adding
features), but a switch 'show only selected feature(s)' would these
both suggestions.
2. Is it possible to shrink row height? May be its Windows, but mine
are extra inflated occupying valuable space. Check this screenshot [1] (first
two rows I shrank
manually)
3. It would be really nice if node selected in the table would
highlight in map canvas, thus allowing us to track were are they
exactly.
4. I think 'close' button and little graphic on the left are
unnecessary. I'd add current layer name and its type right in the window
title.
5. It would be nice to able to delete a node(s) as well.
6. Please consider moving 'start|stop editing' functionality to QGIS
itself, so that you'd have to start and stop editing in QGIS, I think
it will be more straightforward.

Thanks again,
Maxim

 Thanks for this Benoit; it is fantastic.
 We often need to extract the coordinates (and attributes) from a
 point shapefile, and put them in a spreadsheet. This was one of

 gives me a much quicker and more straightforward way of doing it.
 Have you considered displaying the CRS at the top?

 2010/8/24 Benoit de Cabissole ben...@exigesa.com

   Hello List,

  I've created a simple plugin that allows to view the structure of a
  shapefile (X-, Y-coords alongside its attributes) and while at
 it I've also
  added the capability to edit the geometry and attributes and
 save back to
  the shapefile.

  A corollary is that if you want to add a point by typing its
 coords you can
  do it with the plugin (as André aka ALT SHN has suggested). You can even
  create a new shapefile in QGIS and use the plugin to type in coords and
  attributes or paste them from the clipboard.

  Points, lines and polygons shapefiles can be manipulated.

  BUT, I feel it is a quite dangerous plugin to release in a public repo
  because of the potential damages bad edits can do on a shapefile!

  I would thus be very grateful if the most intrepid amongst you
 could test
  it and give comments on its usefulness...

  The plugin is available at the address below:
  http://www.bc-consult.com/free/bccshpv.html

  Cheers,
  Benoit

Hi all,

Just to answer myself. After I figured out the logic of splitGeometry
(with help of Marco and Martin), I've made a small plugin (JoinLines),
which does exactly that, physically combines 2 lines into one.

Currently it can handle both intersecting and snapped lines with any
direction of the nodes (i.e. to and from intersection point and mixed). It does
not however take care of the attributes currently, so use at your own risk.

Repo: GIS-Lab
Plugin: JoinLines

Re: [Qgis-user] CRS for a start

2010-03-21 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Hi

I agree that some improvements can be made, but I'd suggest to make
some of the suggested ones configurable through Settings.

MN a) set the projection for a project file/working environment from the
MN first loaded layer if it has the projection information
Yes, if such behavior is wanted by QGIS user and certain checkbox is
on in Settings. I would avoid making this decision for the user
automatically. So default - off.

MN b) prompt for projection information if the layer does not have it
No. This will slow down work for those who just want to see the data
or make some quick edits. Again, this can be configurable in a)
fasion.

MN c) inform in a popup window when the projection of next loaded layers
MN do not match the projection already set in the working environment
MN (when reprojection on the fly is not ticked)
+1

MN Now, as I personally use metric reference systems (2180, 2176, 2177),
MN every time I open a layer, I have to set the proper CRS.
Why don't you create a prj file then?

MN I mean in QGIS I can open now a holiday photo, go to layer properties
MN and get an impresion from it's metadata, that it is already
MN georeferenced:
MN Layer Spatial Reference System:
MN +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defs
MN which is of course not true. But we have to think about novice GIS
MN users who might either go dizzy or get bad habits.
I agree, the layer properties should not use this as default if prj is
missing or should clearly indicate somehow that this is a guessed CRS,
not necessarily a real one.

[Qgis-user] new georeferencer

2010-01-25 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Hi all,

Let me announce availability of significantly improved
Georeferencer. There are lots of new stuff in it, among the main features:

1. GCP table with errors
2. Completely new interface
3. Raster properties configuration

Let me thank Juergen, he made possible reuse of QGIS dialogs from
plugins and Manuel Massing, whose portion of code we've used.

We welcome you to test it if you use OSGeo4W QGIS under Windows or able to
compile
from svn. We'd like to hear about bugs. Please note, we are not
planning to add big features from now, however we can add them to TODO.

[Qgis-user] announcing RasterCalc

2010-01-16 Thread Maxim Dubinin
Hi all,

we've been working hard on several QGIS things these days and first one
more or less ready to show is a new python plugin RasterCalc. It is
based on Barry's RasterLang idea, but it is using more straighforward
formula mechanism (LISP is hard), familiar calculator interface and
some more goodies.

Please give it a go and we'd like to have feedback. Please note, that
few functions are yet locked, but we plan to unlock them if the basic
logic is working ok.

Don't forget to turn on experimental plugins in your plugin installer.
Have fun.

a little announcement, we've made a new version of our plugin. It
gives QGIS several tools for interacting with Google Earth. You can
quickly send a feature or the whole layer to GE keeping current layer
symbology or override it with your own one. Unique values and single
symbol legends are supported.

More info: http://gis-lab.info/qa/qgis2google-eng.html

It is tested and working under Windows/OSGeo4W/trunk and source code is
available
for linux hackers.
