Hi Borys, 2010/6/11 Borys Jurgiel borysia...@aster.pl: @Borys: it might be related to #2491, but in this case transparency works. I am in this good situation, that on my maps no data is white, so setting transparency do them no harm. Unless you have white pixels within the data area :p But of course I do; since I cope mostly with topo maps - it is useful to have transparency for white pixels @Błażej: you can also edit black areas with any non-gis-related raster tool, set them white and then open in QGIS and set transparency. Just an old trick ;) It's not a solution, it's heresy ;)) Nodata means nodata and nothing else. For formats not supporting nodata (like geoTIFF) there are two workarounds and both should work. ok :) it just worked for me and mapinfo years ago but I cannot recall if these were geotiffs or tiffs One of them is adding the alpha channel and setting it to 0, the second is to choose any non used value as the representative of nodata. If Błażej's files have 0 value used for both nodata and some data, I suppose there is also the alpha channel used and it should be handled by qgis. But it isn't and we could fix it. Looks like a good start for you to work with cpp issues. Just set up the compile environment in the end :p no idea if that's qgis or gdal issue though... Hi Otto et al., 2010/5/31 Otto Dassau otto.das...@gmx.de: Dear Milena, Wroclaw sounds very nice - thanks a lot for your offer! If nobody votes against it, we could make that fix - I think? The only problem I see at the moment is the date. Begining of July or even August (school vacations) is too close I think, because we need to organize funding, holiday, flights etc. Then comes the FOSS4G, 6.-9. September in Barcelona and most people are probably broke after that for a while :). So I guess end october / beginning november as in Vienna is most likely. Yes, we are aware the date we proposed is close, and not our usual hackfest time. We were trying to put it as far in time from Barcelona as possible, also when the venue (and the nice grill place there) is accessible. @Paweł: What other dates can we propose? Re: [Qgis-user] ESRIs ArcGIS lyr-files
Hi, 2010/4/15 Carson Farmer carson.far...@gmail.com: Is there any tool to convert ESRIs lyr-files readable in QGIS? Or do ArcGIS have any other format-system that you can use in QGIS? For instance shp-files can get very stranges coulors or symbols if you open them in QGIS. That's simply because shapefiles don't store symbology themselves. If you want your layers to look like they do in ArcGIS, you have to adjust the symbology of your layers (you can also create a style for for your layers so that they always look the same when you load them). This stuff is all available in the QGIS manual here: http://qgis.org/en/documentation/manuals.html Carson I hope that I live these days, when every GIS can generate and read SLD so we could move not only the data but also the *cartography* :) Milena -- Milena Nowotarska http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Milena_Nowotarska http://quantum-gis.pl/ ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
[Qgis-user] CRS for a start
Hi All, I guess that many users work not only with WGS84 projection (which is set by default in QGIS) so I would like to discuss with you a change in QGIS behaviour on loading a layer. In my opinion it would be good if QGIS: a) set the projection for a project file/working environment from the first loaded layer if it has the projection information b) prompt for projection information if the layer does not have it c) inform in a popup window when the projection of next loaded layers do not match the projection already set in the working environment (when reprojection on the fly is not ticked) Now, as I personally use metric reference systems (2180, 2176, 2177), every time I open a layer, I have to set the proper CRS and, on the other tab change units from degrees to meters. If I forget to do that, I will get strange scale and strange measurement output. At least the change form geographic to metric projection should force the change of units. Otherwise we won't be able to say that QGIS is user friendly ;) What in your opinion should be the most expected behaviour in a good GIS system? I mean in QGIS I can open now a holiday photo, go to layer properties and get an impresion from it's metadata, that it is already georeferenced: Layer Spatial Reference System: +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defs which is of course not true. But we have to think about novice GIS users who might either go dizzy or get bad habits. Re: [Qgis-user] CRS for a start
Hi Maxim, 2010/3/21 Maxim Dubinin s...@gis-lab.info: Hi I agree that some improvements can be made, but I'd suggest to make some of the suggested ones configurable through Settings. MN a) set the projection for a project file/working environment from the MN first loaded layer if it has the projection information Yes, if such behavior is wanted by QGIS user and certain checkbox is on in Settings. I would avoid making this decision for the user automatically. So default - off. +1 and ticked once should stay default for further use MN b) prompt for projection information if the layer does not have it No. This will slow down work for those who just want to see the data or make some quick edits. Again, this can be configurable in a) fasion. MN c) inform in a popup window when the projection of next loaded layers MN do not match the projection already set in the working environment MN (when reprojection on the fly is not ticked) +1 MN Now, as I personally use metric reference systems (2180, 2176, 2177), MN every time I open a layer, I have to set the proper CRS. Why don't you create a prj file then? I do have prj for these layers, but layer prj do not affect QGIS environment in any way now. Milena MN I mean in QGIS I can open now a holiday photo, go to layer properties MN and get an impresion from it's metadata, that it is already MN georeferenced: MN Layer Spatial Reference System: MN +proj=longlat +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +no_defs MN which is of course not true. But we have to think about novice GIS MN users who might either go dizzy or get bad habits. I agree, the layer properties should not use this as default if prj is missing or should clearly indicate somehow that this is a guessed CRS, not necessarily a real one. Ctrl+Shift+something As a windows user I need to remind you (developers) that combination Ctrl+Shift is a little bit dangerous cause it changes the keyboard settings (at least in Poland), so instead of x users will get z and might go dizzy. But we really need them :) adding a layer or doing other common tasks;) The same with other 'one-finger' applications, as kmail, where I'm writing from. I understand Mac users are irritated having to adjust the shortcuts to run Grass console, but now many (maybe more) other users, as me, will have do the same in order to get an convenient environment :) I believe we should either implement shortcuts profiles or at least ask users for a voting (both are infeasible before the release). The main problem is that if we drop the one-finger shortcuts and update the documentation now, reverting this change in the future will look strange ;) So for me doing it just before the release is not a good idea... Anyone else is interested? :) B. I would just say that having a default setup that breaks functionality for a key component of qgis (grass interaction) on one of the supported OS's is a bad idea. Better to let people change the shortcuts to their preference while providing all functionality to all users. I use Mac too, but still adjusting QGIS to one platform shouldn't make inconvenience to users of other platform. Before we think of other shortcut combination, having in mind short release of Daphnis and documentation issues, I would opt for reverting short shortcuts for now.
