Re: [Qgis-user] Bug reporting - data confidentiality?

2017-03-27 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey Jonathan,

The QGIS bug tracker is a public resoure. Anything that is posted there
anyone can see, download, and use.. If you need to keep data confidential
I would not post it it in ticket itself.

If a devleoper shows interests in your ticket they may ask you for the data
priviatly if you need to keep it confidential.

There are however vervioius data scrumbbing methods you can use to fudge
the data depending on what you are keeping confidential.

That means it will only request what you see in the map.

Hmm are you sure we don't do this already?

I suspect we do. Each provider can handle the sorting, giving to it by
QgsFeatureRequest, and hand the results back to the caller. I thought the
attribute table was already implemented this way.

Re: [Qgis-user] My first weekend with QGIS.

2017-01-21 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey John,

First thanks for the feedback. Glad to see your first experience wasn't too
bad despite the issues that you run into.

You are right that this is best sent to the dev list as that is where we
all hang out, the user email is mainly for end users who may or may not be
involved in the development. I will forward this to the dev list for more
feedback for you.

Splitting this up into features/bugs and into the right categories is
definitely the right way to go forward but as you said sometimes it's best
to just get it out first. To make these actionable I suggest you turn them
into tickets whenever you have the chance.

Also be aware of the iceberg issue here and that small things might be
massive under the hood which can explain why things are the way they are.
Good news is that we are getting stronger as a dev team, Qt5 is really
good, so things are getting much better as we evolve.

With that said here is some feedback on your feedback (removed some just
because I don't think I need to comment on everything, we can do that on
the tickets.):

> * Pixelated app-icon.

Known issues. Should be a ticket and a PR that will hopefully resolve it
for 3.0 and backported.

* Tool icons don’t show keyboard shortcuts on hover (tooltips).

however,

* Tooltips are too slow for beginning users.

So it just needs some thought

This should be fixed in 3.0 as Alex did some recent changes there.

This might be a Qt thing as we use it for handling shortcuts. But unsure

3.0 will have shortcut search. Export would be easy enough to add I suspect.

Works for me on Windows. Left will move up one and close children. Up arrow
just moves up.
This is default Qt tree widgets most of the time.

Styling is all handling by Qt and is based on OS. We can override it with
theming but that also
has mixed results. Just needs more digging.

Handled by Qt for now.

See Qt comment for now.

I have thought about this before. It's easy to do just need to work out a
good
workflow for the shortcuts that makes sense. I have thought about
Ctrl+1,2,3,4 etc but
unsure

Might be a Qt issue? Also at times if you don't parent a window correctly
you can
get strange results.

Might also be a Qt thing as some things are not exposed to use to changed.
However there
has been work to have out own wrapper to underlying OS APIs in order to
access things Qt doesn't wrap.
Might be solvable but unsure.

Ramon, do you want to make a ticket and report any place that you find that

If we have it all in a single ticket it's a bit easier to track and knock

Re: [Qgis-user] Using aggregates functions to count intersected features from another layer

2016-10-19 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Maybe using a virtual layer query via DB Manager will work. You have full
SQL join support. Speed isn't always the best but gives you the full power
of SQL which is the correct way to do this IMO.

E.g SELECT LayerA.id, COUNT(*) FROM layerA
JOIN layerB ON ST_WithIn(layerA.geometry, layerB.geometry)
GROUP BY layerA.type

Although you can't do an update but you can make a new layer with the new
counts.

Hey Simon,

There is a add point button at the top of the toolbar in the georeferncer.
You shouldn't have to enter points by hand ever really.

It will even snap to layers in the canvas

Hey Chris,

I have confirmed this for the dialog based editor. If you use the style
dock to edit the rule (F7 or the paint brush icon on the layers panel) it
doesn't happen.

Report it as a bug and assign to me please.

What is in {QGIS Install folder}\apps\qgis\python\plugins

e.g C:\OSGeo4W\apps\qgis\python\plugins

Is there a processing folder in there?

What is in .qgis2\python\plugins?

Yeah. I think Apple is doing something on this front, but that is the

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS releases announced too early IMHO

2016-03-02 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hi,

It would be ideal however packages are maintained by different people due
to the complexity of said task. Windows and major linux distros are done
by Jurgen our release manager, hence why they come out right on time. I
suspect in the future we will have build bots for each platform but at this
point OS X is still the outliner and requires some domain knowledge for
packaging only a few have.

They normally don't take long to be made so just hold tight.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 2.14 LTR

2016-02-29 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hi,

Just so people are aware of the process. The count down on the website
doesn't always mean the packages will be ready on release date, that is
only the date/time that the code will be unfroozen and packages will begin
being made. Some packages can take longer then others before they are up
on the website, OS X for example. There is no "official" release until
the banner is changed on qgis.org and announcement is made on the mailing
lists/twitter, etc.

Packages are being made and will be up on the website when ready, best
advice is to keep an eye there. You can normally get the builds from
OSGeo4W if using Windows, however until the packages are out that isn't an
official version even if on version 2.14, last minute changes might still
need to happen.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS Server sometimes not sending commits to postgis

2016-01-26 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hi,

I'm not sure relying on the QGIS cache to hold your features for you while
you work offline is a great idea, and IMO is only going to give you pain in
the long run. Better to download the features into something like sqlite
or shapefile using OGR and then create a sync type process to push back up
after the days work.

Just working on cached WFS features also leaves you with no data if QGIS
crashes or computer shuts down.

There is command line args you can use. --optionspath and --settingspath
which will let you set a folder to write and Save settings to. This is
what I use when I want a clean QGIS start each time.

Bob,

QGIS has had buffer options on the labels for a while now. Just add a
buffer with the colour you want for the outline is all you need. No need
to copy the data or anything like that.

For some reason that setting is null when the plugin asks for it but not in
the options which I'm not sure why. This is a external plugin so the author
will need that handle that case.

Here are some workarounds for now.

Run this:

from PyQt4.QtCore import *
QSettings().setValue('locale/userLocale', 'en_AU')

You need to import the module and then use the settings class.

Or you can put the attached file into .qgis2\python\plugins\editablegeocsv
folder. I have patched this file so it should work.

Re: [Qgis-user] Editable GeoCSV

2015-10-04 Thread Nathan Woodrow
That is the error.

The plugin has this line:

locale = QSettings().value('locale/userLocale')[0:2]

which is crashing because it gets NULL and then tries to slice it and fails.

Try this:

QSettings().setValue('locale/userLocale', 'en_AU')

I'm not sure why it is returning NULL but that should fix it.

Hey,

I think we really should just stick to what we are already doing. Run
though all the names like Andreas said, even if we lock in the release
names now. There isn't going to be any harm in that. If we run out of HF
place names another cool idea might be to use the place names of core
developers home towns, that would give us at least 30+ by the time that

Re: [Qgis-user] QGis server project files stored in DB?

2015-08-12 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey Lars,

It has been a long time goal of mine to add this as a core feature, in fact
that is why I renamed the File menu to Project a few versions back, but I
have never quite got there yet. In theory I don't think it would be too
hard but just time and effort really.

For a current solution you could always just dump them from the db to the
disk at intervals or something like that. Bit of Python or bash scripting
would do it pretty easy.

At the bottom of that dock there is a interface selection tool. Change it
to advanced interface.

Note: There is ongoing discussion on the dev mailing list on how we can
improve this.

Re: [Qgis-user] How to convert ECW using open source packages into something else?

2015-08-03 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Mainly because on windows the package is all standalone and ECW is included
in that package. So you just install and it should just work out of the
box. I have had working ECW support since 1.8 or before, only a small time
at 2.0 where we (us developers) got a bit confused with the WCW licence but
that was cleared up by ERDAS and it's worked out of the box ever since.
The same should be for Linux but I suspect the package systems add some
complication to that.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS instalation and uninstallation issues

2015-07-17 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey,

How about we solve the issues in the software? This is a bug if you can't
get it to work right. Dropping the standalone doesn't solve this issue and
the standalone is used by people that need to do offline installs as it
contains a all in one package ready to go. QGIS shares settings over
versions that includes things like path to GRASS and SAGA. I suspect this
is the cause of the issue, if you have 32bit and 64bit installed it's
pointing to the same GRASS install.

Good thing your IT is wrong then hey :P

I also suspect network if the files are large it will pull the whole thing
over the network before it can open it. GML also isn't the most efficient
format in the world so take that into consideration.

What other layers are in the project? If you have lots of network layers
it will try and read them when you load the new layer in order to refresh
the map, remember each pan is going to read the files to get the data.

We will need a bit more info on the project and files to help more.

Hey Burghardt,

As a workaround for now it's pretty easy to read the xml file and replace
the layer ids using Python. QGIS doesn't care about the format of the id
as long as it's a strings so you could replace them all with a GUID if you
wanted.

Double quote is a field reference, single quote is a string. Functions
normally take a string for a field name, if you use "fieldname" that means
value of fieldname.

You don't need to use the attribute function to get the current feature
fields, just use the field name:

'output_'||  "name"

"id" ||  "name"

Re: [Qgis-user] Fwd: QGIS crash on loading projects

2015-01-28 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Ok give this a go.

In the install folder for QGIS there is a file called OSGeo4w.bat. Run that
and type:

qgis --optionspath "C:\temp\qgis" --configpath "C:\temp\qgis"

Both those options take a folder path and will save the settings there.
These will create a new user home and settings location in temp\qgis. This
is good for seeing if there is a busted setting in your registry for QGIS.

Run that command and see if it still crashes.

 Hi,

Personally this is what I would do.

I would install Qgis 2.6.1 using the OSGEO install.

I followed these steps. My install was already done via osge064w and
 uninstalling was a little tricky.
I removed the directories and the registry entries.

I then reinstalled QGIS via the express installer.

QGIS wouldn't start giving an error about jvm.dll missing from my
 computer.

I manually selected the java install via the advanced option, jvm is
installed and in a subfolder in C:\osgeo4w64

I suspect it's a path problem, working on this.

I would make sure that all mapped drive are properly remapped with the
proper passwords, I would install the open layer plugin and wms or other
data servers. Make sure the symbols are reinstalled if you had new ones and
also make sure the .svg symbol images are well mapped.

If the problem persists, I would repurge Qgis, install and older
 version and try again.

Finally, i would then start looking at the project files with a text
editor to try to understand the problem. I is likely the crash is cause by
a layer that cannot be opened and that this layer depends on a plugin like
openlayer, a mapped drive, wms servers... That would be my guess.

Most of my projects are on a network drive and I've managed to get a

 Is this behaviour logged anywhere?

Re: [Qgis-user] py2exe for windows, import qgis.core anf qgis.gui

2014-12-10 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey Robert,

It can be done. I have done it with my Roam project, you can find the
setup.py logic here https://github.com/DMS-Aus/Roam/blob/master/setup.py

The three main things are:
   1) Make sure you have a batch file that does path setup and call it
before running: python setup.py py2exe. You can see an example at
https://github.com/DMS-Aus/Roam/blob/master/scripts/setenv.bat I run this
is all my sub scripts when building, etc. Basically call setenv.bat call
python setup.py py2exe

   2) You need to copy things like qgis provider plugins and resources into
the package, you can see that being done here:
https://github.com/DMS-Aus/Roam/blob/master/setup.py#L82 (ignore the mess
there)

   3) You will need to do some path setup before you call QgsApplication or
else things will not load correctly:
https://github.com/DMS-Aus/Roam/blob/master/src/roam/environ.py#L107

The Roam code might not be a good example as there is a lot of other things
in there but you should be able to make your way though it to work it out.

Hey,

>Yes I know what you are saying however this is the path that works as I
too have to live with firewalls and restricted access due to security
settings ( I have to run as administrator just to save updates to projects)

You should always have access to .qgis2 in your user home as qgis wouldn't
load right without access there. If you have to manual install still
install into there.

You can still do what you want of course but I just don't recommend that as
advice to people because .qgis2 is the right place.

No. Never put them there. That is the install folder for qgis and all user
plugins should live in .qgis2\python\plugins in your user folder, or else
they won't show up when you upgrade to a new version.

Hey Loïc,

Just to make you aware there is a pull request to merge chances that would
bring some more advanced drawing tools into core. Not the same as your
plugin but still pretty handy.

There is also a QEP (QGIS Enhancement Proposal) to discuss the integration of
such features. It would be really good to get your thoughts on that. You
can read it and and comment here:
https://github.com/3nids/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/blob/cadtools/QEP-CAD-tools.rst
We will be fleshing it out a bit more soon, adding pictures etc.

Re: [Qgis-user] Future change in the Python support?

2014-10-27 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hey Ricardo,

Currently there is no hard plan to move to Python 3. I suspect when we
move to Qt5 we will move. Like Andrea has said this is not a simple change
as it will require a update of plugins, however it will not bad a hard or
bad update. I don't think it would be very hard for people to upgrade when
we do.

My advice is to learn both. They are not that different and you will be
able to swap the two easy enough. If you only want to learn one then 2.7
is fine, when 3.0 comes as a update you will be able to switch pretty easy.

Nathan

Use the --configpath and --settings path command line options to split the

Re: [Qgis-user] Get layer-id by layer (not by acive layer)

2014-10-13 Thread Nathan Woodrow
layer.id() returns the id

http://qgis.org/api/classQgsMapLayer.html#a710f27dec806d3bcd5ae14701c2e6fd7

layer.name() returns the name

http://qgis.org/api/classQgsMapLayer.html#aff7fb3990b6c736fbe41643666b027e5

If you have a layerid and you want to look up the layer object for it you
can use:

QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().mapLayers[layerid]

if you have a name and would like the layers objects:

maplayers = QgsMapLayersRegistry.instance().mapLayersByName(name)

Hey Walter.

Try this:

maplayers = QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().mapLayers()

maplayers will be a dict of layerid-layer object
