[Qgis-user] Tips on buying a new laptop

2011-09-28 Thread percy langa
Heya,

So I've decided to register for a GIS Module, along with other modules as
part of a Bsc Hons Geography Degree.

The good news is that this is an opportunity to get a new laptop, a fresh
start :) The not-so-good news is that the GIS course is based on IDRISI
(well, I have never used IDRISI, and I am really liking QGIS at the moment).

So, I wanna get a feel on what laptop hardware are people running for GIS:

- SSD vs HDD
- RAM type and speed
- Video/Graphics
- Main Screen (15'', 17'', etc)
- Secondary Screen (20'', 22'', 24'', etc)
- Glossy vs Matte Screens
- Screen Resolutions
- Motherboard
- Processor
- Peripherals and Ports
- Battery packs

and, finally:

- OS or OSes
- 32bit vs 64bit

Besides GIS, this new laptop will do all the normal home tasks incl movie
playback. No games (well, maybe Angry Birds, Mario Brothers and
Classic Arcades).

I am not too perturbed about brands as, over the years, I have switched
between Lenovo, ACER, Samsung, HP and Apple. Lenovo topped the charts for
me. Dell would make an interesting case study :)

Many thanks,

bit heavy to read. Rather something like:

 - please disable html mode in your mail client
 - please post inline, inserting your comments after each point in the
 original poster's message
 - please clip away extraneous / irrelevant content from the thread as
 the conversation goes on
 - please don't email posters offlist unless specifically invited to do so
 - please refrain from using expletives and making inflammatory comments
 - if you disagree with someone, please provide a considered and
logical response explaining why a different approach should be taken

Maybe we can add a link at the bottom of each message using mailman

Re: [Qgis-user] KML to GoogleEarth

Well said Matt. My understanding is CRS could use a lot of improvement.

Cheers!

On Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 12:16 PM, Matt Boyd mattsli...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi Walter,
I'm not sure what your understanding of qgis is but it deals with
pretty much every projection you can throw at it and the project
projection/CRS shouldn't really cause any issues if all the
projections are set correctly and the translations are working.

Project CRS: the projection you'll see displayed on the map on the screen.

Layer/item CRS: with on the fly reprojection enabled you can load a
file with pretty much any projection and QGIS will reproject the data
as required, it won't change the projection of the file you've loaded
the and if you want to reproject it permanently you'll need to go the
save as route and tell it what projection you want it to save the
new file in. When you create a new vector layer you have the option to
create it in the project or any other CRS.

eg: You're able to load a file with CRS A into a project with CRS
B then load another file with CRS C and save the file that's CRS
 A as CRS D.

The disadvantage to the flexibility of all of this is that
occasionally QGIS won't find the CRS or the projection file or you'll
get confused as to which CRS the file/layer your working in.

The point to what I'm saying is that you shouldn't need to create a
new project or worry too much about the default CRS if what you want
to do is reproject the vector files so they're compatible with GE. You
do need to know what the CRS of the in and out files are though.

If you're able to send me through a small file as an example to show
what you want to do I can have a look.

 Regards
 Matt

Works for me Qgis 1.6 CRS: WGS84, EPSG:4326, 3452

Also try saving to GPS exchange format, then open in google earth.

layers for a mapping project and so I'd now like to download the latest QGIS
release at home for when I telework from there. But, of course, the site
seems to be down (since last evening). I didn't see a site status on any of
the sites I visited and so I thought I'd ask here.

Is there a mirror download site?

 Thanks!

[Qgis-user] QGIS 1.7 (Print Composer) stability issues (Win XP)

2011-07-19 Thread percy langa
Hey all,

My experience with 1.7 has been good and really bad.

I really like the new features, especially the ability to switch between Old
and New Symbology. The trouble started with Print Composer. First, it was
Legend issues (a white band appears at the top of the Legend, extending to
the top of the Composer). After a bit of troubleshooting (I switched off all
the layers in Map View and switched them on again, one at the time), the
Legend was almost working again (but really slow). The 'white band' would
only be present if certain layers were added to the Map View.

Secondly, and the most critical issue, is that QGIS crashes when I save the
Print Composer as an Image (tiff). 'Save as PDF' works fine.

So, after a few crashes yesterday, I re-installed 1.6 and I am happy again.

Funny thing is, a few months back, before 1.7 stable was announced, I had
both 1.6 and qgis-dev working fine. Hopefully I'll spend a bit more time
troubleshooting the 1.7 issues.

Machine: Win XP, Service Pack 3

Cheers and keep up the great work,

Percy

 Hi

Yesterday I added a 'tip of the day' type dialog that appears when
QGIS starts. You have probably have seen a similar feature in other
applications. And no, before you ask, we are not going to implement a
'Mr. Paperclip' function next :-). Right now the tip list is rather
basic so I would like to invite everyone to submit your favourite
little tips for QGIS. Here are some guidelines:

 - The tip should have a short title
 - The tip content should be short - one or two paragraphs
 - Simple HTML formatting can be used for the tip, including links, lists
 etc.
 - Tips should be broadly useful and perhaps reveal functionality that
 users may have otherwise overlooked.

 Here is an example submission:

Title: Quick access to project properties
Content: You can quickly access the project properties dialog by
clicking on the icon in the bottom right corner of the window in the
 status bar area.

If you are a developer, you can add tips directly to
src/app/qgstipfactory.cpp - it should be self explanatory what to do
when you look at the source.

Hi, Percy.  If your map unit is in meters (m) but want your scale bar to
display kilometers (km), one way to do this in Composer would be to set some
parameters in the Scale bar dialogue (under the Item tab when you have
 the scale bar selected).

Assume that you want your scale bar to show one kilometer only.  You can set
the Segment size (map units) to be 1000, and the Map units per bar unit
to be 1000 as well.  Set 1 Right segments and 0 Left segments.  That
should give you a scale bar with one tick equivalent to 1 kilometer in
 length.

Finally, set the Unit label to Kilometer or km or something like that.

I hope it works for you!
