Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and geopackages in sharepoint environement

2022-08-11 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf via Qgis-user
Hi,
we use Sharepoint extensively. Here my 2 comments:

  1. Even when a Project is entirely on Sharepoint with all i.e. GPKG, you can
work with it without restrictions (except speed)
  2. Due to the filesize of some ressources as for example Geopackages you run
risk, that Sharepoint files get out of sync. Specifically when Team works on
the project.

Therefore my recommendation: Move project to local drive, work with it and,
when finished, move back to sharepoint dir.

Cheers
Wolfgang

Hi,

We use Google Drive on Macs for shapefile and GeoPackages. The first thing we
always tell our users is to set the files to Available Offline, so all
reads/writes are local before being synced up to the cloud. That reduces
issues, but all the obvious ones around file corruption and overwriting still
apply. As mentioned, GDAL/QGIS did use to always write the lockfile inside
whenever anyone opened a geopackage, which would cause the file to sync back to
the cloud and flood your bandwidth, which is a real pain. That has changed, but
it doesn't solve the multiple-users overwriting issue though. My long-term
solution was going to be building a proper geospatial infrastructure with
MerginMaps and PostGIS so people 'check-out' the geopackages they needed, then
merged them back in. Sadly we've just been sold to an ESRI-using company, so
that will never happen, however they do use Sharepoint so maybe I'll find out
if that's any better than Drive in my near future.

Cheers!

John.

Re: [Qgis-user] Offline background map for large regions

2022-07-11 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf via Qgis-user
Hi you might think about a local Maptile Server running on a VM on your PC.
That's what I have for meetings, where I am offline. However for disk space
reason I limited the Map to Germany and it's still very slow. The VM is
internally networked with the PC so it like a local "internet" connection.

Betreff: [Qgis-user] Offline background map for large regions

Hello!

First I have to say that I'm a qgis beginner and I'm not very much into the
concepts about functions and design behind QGIS, and GIS in general.
So please apologize for any strange question...

Currently I have an older core i7 with 8 GB RAM running QGIS Desktop
3.10 on Linux Mint 20.3, which I know is already obsolete but it's in the
repositories of this most recent Linux Mint LTS version, and I need a stable
system that does not break due to a library update etc.

I want to visualize data points, that I collect "on the road" over large
distances, on the fly. So far so good everything works very fine, opening the
data log file in a text layer with surveillance of log changes. Except having
an offline background map for orientation. There is not always internet
connection, and also it would be quite expensive to continuously download the
tiles from a server over LTE.

Up to now I tried using shapefiles from geofabrik.de, but even importing a
small town takes minutes.

Also the plugins for downloading xyz tiles will not work, as I need whole
europe offline available in the best case, at least a whole country.

Then I imported a .osm file in a spatialite database but there are thousands of
attributes I have to chose from, not knowing which ones, and also I cannot
import more than a small region due to the insane time it takes.

The last thing I tried was a download of Germany vector tiles from
maptiler.com, about 3,5 GB. When I drag and drop it into QGIS, it loads for
hours without coming to an end, there is no information about what the software
is doing (progress bar) or a button to stop the import, so I finally killed the
QGIS process.

I was also looking for GeoPackage maps, as they seemed to have an index and
mbtiles not (which may be what causes the described problems), but did not find
any resources on the net except from a site that provides the whole planet
earth (which is way too much for me).

Yesterday I tried to setup a QGIS Server to set up a WMTS service on the same
machine, but I failed on finding out how to make map data available on the
server (I have to provide a QGIS project file but as I already wrote, I was not
even able to import a simple all-germany map).

So, finally, there must be something I'm missing or I don't understand.
If you have a smartphone or a Garmin GPS, you can easily download a map for
whole germany that is about 2 GB, that can be imported in a few seconds, then
accessed very performant by slow processors with tiny available memory. I also
don't see why it should be necessary to go via a WMTS Server (http) to provide
map data in a way QGIS can them handle with performance - how is the server
getting its high performance, and why QGIS can't do it on it's own? Or can it -
how??

Any hints about how I can get large area offline maps into QGIS are highly
appreciated - thank you very much in advance!

Andreas

Re: [Qgis-user] [SPAM] Re: Own processing scripts doesn't load into processing toolbox since QGIS update to 3.22.8.

2022-06-29 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf via Qgis-user
Thanks Andrea,
you won't believe it. I ran setup to figure out the versions for you in my mail
below. When I clicked the finish button something was unexpectedly installed. I
just realized, that I see now all my scripts back in qgis. So it's possible,
that Fiona was updated. I use normally the norbit.de mirror, as it's the
fastest from here.

However I found now another effect, that produces the following:
"2022-06-29T18:05:19 CRITICALKonnte Layer
ogr:dbname='C:/Users/WMeinolf/WmLocal/LocalTempDir\220620 Check Alg6.1.gpkg'
table="Hauspunkte-Test" (geom) nicht erzeugen: OGR-Treiber für '' nicht
gefunden (OGR-Fehler: )"

It seems to happen, of the qgs filename contains a . When I rename "220620
Check Alg6.1.qgs" to "220620 Check Alg61.qgs", the error is gone. But this
needs some further tects on my side. I had in the past some similar issues with
German Special characters (äöüß) in filename or path

Anyway, I am more than happy, that it seems to work again. Thanks for your
help!!

Cheers and enjoy the evening
Wolfgang

I found some older cases in the web where this was caused due to different

Has anyone else observed such effect? If not I tend to open a case.

Hi Chris et al. here's a video showing the steps I'm following -- can

someone pinpoint what I'm doing wrong?

https://vimeo.com/669657507/e84405ce12
Hi Doug,
If I understand correctly your "issue" looking at the video, there is probably
a misunderstanding about how csv / vector layers / reprojection work.

A GIS vector layer stores information about the features geometries (the
coordinates of each point or vertex) and the features alphanumeric attributes
(the fields and their values).

A csv file stores alphanumeric attributes.

When you import the csv file in QGIS , since some fields contain values
representing the coordinates of a point, it becomes a vector layer in which
the features geometries are created, on importing, from the values (the
coordinates) contained in such fields and the features attributes are the same
attributes stored in the csv file.

Reprojecting a vector layer from a CRS to another one only changes the features
geometries and not the features attributes.

Exporting a vector layer (with default options) to a csv file only saves its
alphanumeric attributes.

Does this make sense to you?

Do you need to transform the coordinates values relative to a CRS stored in the
EAST and NORTH fields of your csv file to the coordinates values relative to
another CRS and update your EAST and NORTH fields or add new fields with the
new values and save it as another csv file?

There various ways to obtain the some result.

For example:
- you can select the GEOMETRY: AS_XY layer option in order to add X an Y fields
to the exported CSV in which the coordinates values are stored relative to the
CRS set in the CRT option.
- or you can reproject the layer (Processing tool: "Reproject layer") and than
use the Field Calculator to add new field or updated the EAST and NORTH fields
with the new coordinates of the points and then save the layer to a CSV file
with the default options.
- or you can use the Processing tool "Add X/Y fields to layer" to add X and Y
fields with the coordinates values relative to the desired CRS and then save
the layer to a CSV file with the default options.

Regards.

[Qgis-user] Installations issues Geopandas / Fiona libraries

2022-01-18 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Hi,
we developed some processing scripts, which use additional Python libraries,
one of them is geopandas, which needs Fiona as prerequisite. Now we installed a
fresh pc from scratch and found, that our scripts show errors (or don't even
appear in the processing tool box). Investigations came to the result, that
geopandas and Fiona are obviously installed but can't be imported into QGIS.

As we installed the last pc late November, everything was ok. All installations
are done with latest OSGeo4W installers.

Here my question:

Did anyone observed similar issues, possibly with other librarys or has anyone
a solution, how to fix that.

Thanks an best regards from Bavaria

[Qgis-user] Changing Scripts folder location programmatically

MODEL_FOLDER)

Now: I tried to modify the value using

Hi,
I gave up to import DWG directly. I always convert them with ODA File Converter

for the import. In this case I drag the DXF into qgis and filter the
required Layers manually. In this case unfortunately the symbology is gone. All
DWG are customer provided, I have no ACAD available.

Hi,

The GDAL/ORG library works with Open Design Alliance Teigha library. They have
a support for R13-15, R2004, R2007, R2010, R2013 and R2018 but since Autocad is
a closed format, then all of this is basically the result of reversed
engineering. DXF is an open format so that is easier to deal with.

I believe that the drag and drop functions for DWG and DXF uses the libopencad
drivers (and that is limited to r2000 or ACAD1015)) (at least in QGIS 3.20) so
if you did drag and drop a correct file format, then the DWG worked.

It's my personal experience that anything past R15 (2000) will be buggy in QGIS
but you can also open those files using the project > import/export > import
layer from DWG/DXF. For some reasons, some DWG files cannot be dragged and
dropped but can be imported via the project import function. This has the
advantage of keeping the Autocad styling. I guess this function probably uses
the Open Design Alliance Teigha library and not the libopencad drivers as it
will open files that I cannot drag and drop??? Looks like those functions are
not available via the python API nor the Processing toolbox either:(

Anyways, when that fails (about 50% of the time on very big files), I save the
DWG to DXF and that either fixes the file or makes it more compatible with the
driver. IMHO, Exporting dwg to shp file is the only real interesting feature
of AutoCAD Map3D. The last version I regularily worked with has probably
2013-15 so maybe they have updated the product since.

Anyway, when I tried the simple drag and drop into QGIS 3.22 it never worked.
Always an error message about invalid data, even after I used DWG Trueview to
convert it to the oldest possible versions (97/98 and 2000). I did manage to

That DXF could be drug (I hate the word “dragged” – seems along the lines of
“runned”) into QGIS and appeared OK. Export to a shapefile and then do some
affine adjustment magic and things can be worked with.

Is there a reason that a DWG can’t be dropped into QGIS 3.22 but a DXF can?
Are there some DWG versions that just don’t work? I thought I got a DWG to
appear OK in 3.16, but maybe I just imagined it and used a DXF before too. . . .

I have no deep technical insight into dwg or dxf, but I am pretty sure that

One of the reasons, CAD-"data" is produced with a local reference system

[Qgis-user] Downgrade with OSGeo4W Installer Windows 10

2021-11-18 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Hi, since I upgraded Sunday night to 3.22.0-4 (or was it -3), I encounter
serious problems with existing and new projects. Upgrade to currently 3.22.0-4
was not helpful. I installed from scratch various times with and without new
profiles. Working a lot with processing scripts also using plugins like i.e.
QUICKOSM. Also I have the feeling, that the current release does not detect CRS
in existing GPKG Layers. To open these worked like a charm until Sunday night
with the older release.

Is there any process to downgrade using OSGeo4W Installer to an older Release
than just the previous one? I don't like to start with stand alone installers.

Thanks for any comment and recommendation.

Best Regards
Wolfgang

[Qgis-user] Access attributes of temp "layer" before loading into qgis

2021-09-14 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Hi,
In my scripts I work intensively with processing algs. In the script the
processing algs “OUTPUT” is set to QgsProcessing.TEMPORARY_OUTPUT. The result
is written to i.e. outputs [ResultFirststAlg]. When I like to feed the result
in the next alg inside the same script, I set “INPUT” of the following alg to
outputs [ResultFirststAlg] [OUTPUT]. So far so good.

Now, I like to change some attributes in the Layer, which is at outputs
[ResultFirststAlg] [OUTPUT]. I can do this with the field calculator, however
the results are then stored in a new layer, i.e. outputs [FieldCalc] [OUTPUT].

Currently I load the layer into qgis by using loadlayer alg at the end of the
first script. Then I start a new script, which address the layer via Layer =
QgsProject.instance().mapLayersByName(‘Loaded Layer from first script’),
calculate the index by LayerIndex = Layer [0] or the Name for algs as LayerName
= LayerIndex.name().

Now, when I consolidate the scripts, I cannot select by layername, as the
loadlayer seems to be processed at the end of the script.

Is there any way, to modify attribute values directly in the initial layer at
outputs [ResultFirststAlg] [OUTPUT]?

Thanks in advance
Wolfgang

Sure. Explode and snap the network, check for duplicates, merge the lines and
split with lines with itself. For FTTH approach (should this be relatesd to
your previous question) I would not recommend to design anything based on
centerlined of roads. For a professional FTTH planning you need to plan nest
routes on both sindes of the road. Like here:

In the same road network, there are also some streets with single lines such as

Is it possible to convert the entire road network such that we have only single
lines and not double lines such as above. Since the road network is huge, it
may not be possible to select manually each segment and run the tools. Is there
an automated tool that can do this for the entire network?

2021-07-01 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Hi,
I get good results with following processing alg workflow:

  *   Explode objects with explodelines
  * Check and remove duplicates with deleteduplicategeometries
  * Remove remaining empty objects with removenullgeometries
  * Merge all into single feature with dissolve
  * Split in most simple features with splitwithlines, use dissolved layer as
input and lines for splitwithlines
  * Finally I apply createspatialindex To accelerate the following steps.

I use this as “cleaning” step in my FTTH scripts to clean layers before I
calculate $length and to use resulting line layer as “road”-network to connect
points with lines.

Hi,

Multipart to single part will only split multipart object if they exist. In
your case, you have no multipart objects. What you appear to have is multiple
line on top of each other. (Overlapping lines. That is probably because you
did a all-to all shortest path analysis. Therefore, you have multiple paths
overlapping others.

Re: [Qgis-user] Qgis low CPU and Memory load

2021-04-16 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Thanks for the excellent feedback and hints. First of all, my QGIS qork is
mainly with vector layers. Therefore unfortunately the OpenCL capabilities
don’t help. To my understanding this is mainly for accelerating heavy raster
calculations. Secondly and as already mentioned, my most urgent need is to
accelerate the execution of GRASS v.net.steiner and v.clean as part of my
toolbox processing scripts for a number of given route networks in separate
areas.

However, on you feedback I searched a bit and found, that obviously since
QGIS3 some parallelization seems to be supported. In the developers coockbook
here:
https://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/docs/pyqgis_developer_cookbook/tasks.html#task-from-a-processing-algorithm
I found some promising info including the link to here:
https://www.opengis.ch/2018/06/22/threads-in-pyqgis3/. I will spend some time
to modify my loop through my separate network areas to try, to start python
jobs from inside the loop, which are then collected at the end.

Thanks again for your good ideas and have a good weekend

Hi,

You can also activate the OpenCL option. Some algorithms have been optimized
(I believe it’s still experimental). If you have a compatible OpenCL video
card, it will run these on the card. If not, it can probably run on compatible
CPUs.

https://www.itopen.it/opencl-acceleration-now-available-in-qgis/

I find it’s worth testing equivalent algorithms from different sources in the
Processing plugin is worth the trouble. Some Saga algorithm are faster.
Merging vector lines, for example, could take a long time using the QGIS
algorithm (talking hours) and was much faster (a few minutes) using the Saga
version of the tool. I also found that some algorithms are much faster to
handle when the files are not open beforehand in the layer manager. For
example, the Processing plugin can sometimes grab the needed files directly on
the hard drive rather than picking one that is already open in the layer
manager. Looking at the processor, memory and disk usage can also help identify
bottle necks in the hardware.

[Qgis-user] Qgis low CPU and Memory load

2021-04-15 Thread Wolfgang Meinolf
Dear Community,
I use Qgis quite a while under win10 and ubuntu (via Oracle VM Box). My FTTH
scripts include GRASS i.e. v.net.steiner algorithm, which are quite CPU and
memory intensive. However I never observed more than 30% CPU and never more
than appx 4GB mem usage. My Hardware is Intel I7, 32GB Ram and 1000TB SSD. At
same time I don't observe any other activities i.e. on network. I installed
OsGEO4W the 64bit Version. I'. currently on 3.18.1

I have however the impression to use a 32bit version.

I would appreciate any hint, how I can increase the CPU and MEM Load, to
accelerate my scripts, which run usually quite a while. What do I wrong?

Thanks in advance and best regards from Bavaria.
