After that you take those information and put them on a
map following the Nicolas's steps.

search with the terms .. QGIS geocoding .. returned plenty of leads. As always
there are multiple ways this can be done so don't be afraid to try the
geocoding from a few different services especially if the address locations are
in rural areas. Some systems work best in cities, others in lesser known areas.

this is a subjects by itself, mixing open data, crowdsourcing, big data,
research data, etc.
It's not only a sort of webography, but also asks for an accurate evaluation of
viability for a given project.
Anyway, here is the Free GIS Datasets (Categorised List):
http://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/
Expecially noteworthy for Italy, as you surely already know, is the Portale
cartografico nazionale (http://www.pcn.minambiente.it) and the data of the
geoportals of italian regions (see here:
http://www.centrointerregionale-gis.it/, a table a little after half-page –
it's a long page).
Still about Italy and open data, GFOSS used to collect references here
http://gfoss.it/drupal/geodati, and the dedicated
http://www.opengeodata.it/ site (related initiatives, few specific
references) among others show the results of italian efforts towards open data.
Beware, as sometimes happen, open data means not-live-anymore-data or at least
not-necessary-up-to-the-declared-date (formally accurate metadata usually hide
vague and fussy reference to the date of survey).
Don't underestimate OSM expecially for local development projects. It's
becoming much better than official cartography because of the difference
between remote sensing (and photogrammetry) and direct survey.

This for my two (Euro)cents...

My question would not be in any way critical but open to discussion.
Probably everyone will have its objectives and certainly will need different
information but there are basic information that are common to all (may be
trivial, but beginning I did not know where to download the shapefiles, there
are several sites but I personally do not know of many , in particular for
Italy).
The community is crucial and often I turned with great success and I thank all
those who patiently respond by providing their valuable time.
Thank Anita, I'll read your book!

Well

I guess there is no optimal use of QGIS. Everyone has other
priorities and everyone is using QGIS in other ways.
So unless you are not writing a book for your own usecase I guess
there will never be THE book for you.
Information about howto use and optimal workflows for different things
will always be cluttered in different books or in the net.

The Documentation is there and (I hope) it covers all of the core
functionality of QGIS. The way you assemble this functionality is
completely in your hand.

Speking specifically from where to download shapefiles - There is a
lot of open data available .. too much to for one book. And for some
information you will find literally NO open data (unfortunately).
There is no golden way for that. (Beside that - downloading data is
very country specific).

Sorry to say that.

But there is light.. If you have any specific question - just ask here
on the mailing list and I am sure you will get some answers (for your
book :) )

kind regards
Werner

Is there a way to put them all?

then you probably have 2 Shapes with different coordinate systems - kml is
always wgs84 (epsg:4326).
You have to enable 'on-the-fly' CRS transformation, then it should fit
together.

If you need a background map, try the OpenLayers Plugin. Ther you have the
choice between Google, OSM, Apple and some other basemaps.

Hi Marilena:

In Google Earth, you must save your place as kml file.

In QGIS you can open directly this KML. If you want edit it, then save this KML
file as a new SHP file.

Good luck

I will try.

That's weird. Could you please create a test case, ideally with a very small

with only one small shapefile, before and after moving it with the plugin?
Thanks.

The data type cannot be qstrings. They will need to be integer data types for
them to be available in the graduated drop down selection. Use the field
calculator to convert them.

Watch this video example about converting - http://www.youtube.com/watch?

 Dear Marillena,

you can open speadsheet data (xls, xlsx) with open vector data, you must
select all files in the dialog to see speadsheet files.
You can join the speadsheet to the shapefile joinning them. In the
shapefile properties dialog look for join tab.

 Best regards,
 Zoltan

 Hi,
yes the file is a csv (which has numeric values).
Check the csv properties within QGIS - Fields Tab: See if your fields
are really interpreted as integer/real values and NOT string!
Cause when this is string, the values can't show up for classification.

When you use 2.0 (at least), you might have better luck importing the
csv through Layers - Add delimited text file instead of drag-and-drop
into the ToC.
There QGIS tries to guess the field type.

This might fail as well, cause your original excel sheet might have
wrong data. A very popular bug are spaces in front or behind your numbers.
You should search and delete them there.

There is also the possibility to create an affiliated csvt-file (see
http://anitagraser.com/2011/03/07/how-to-specify-data-types-of-csv-columns-
for-use-in-qgis/),
in which you define the field type for the csv. But this is a very
tiresome work when you have lots of fields.

So, lots of speculations from my side. But we'll see ...

Cheers
Bernd

The layer to add this csv is a shapefile (its table of attributes contains
 cod, name, lenghts of municipalities).
I joined them and infact the table of attributes shows the name of
 municipalities, lenghts...and corresponding values.
I saved it (ESRI Shapefile) and when I select the Style to graduate the
values, the column shows only the cod. of municipalities, shape leng and
area.
 Can you help me?

 Hi,

 1.
adding a csv is not the same like loading a shape. So you can't edit it.
Loading as dbf should give you write permissions (OpenOffice/Libre Office
still offer dbf support, while new Excel versions don't)

 2.
I assume you joined the csv to an existing layer? In QGIS 2.0, the joined
columns are presented for classification, in 1.8 you will (i think) have
to make the join permanent by saving the joined layer to a new one. Then,
all attributes are editable as well.

 Hope I answered your questions
