Yes Win 7 comes in 64bit flavor. What was meant above is that there is
no pre-compiled QGIS for 64bit Windows, Which is something we really
ought to work on changing.

There are some options out there to buy without windows at all(That's
what I did). Nvidia has better closed source drivers for linux right
now. The open source drivers are not as good as what's been done for
ATI, but FOSS drivers lag behind new cards.

Enjoy,
Alex

Thanks Andreas,

I think Win 7 has a 64bit version (will check though).

I would love to dual-boot win laptop with linux (and, hopefully, this does
not affect the dealer's and manufacture's warranty). Naturally, I would wipe
win, install linux and VMs :)

Cheers!

I would mainly make sure you have enough RAM and an OS that can benefit
of the additional RAM. I would recommend at least 4GB RAM, better 8.

Linux 64bit should be able to use the additional RAM, the Win32 QGIS
cannot use more than 2 or 3GB. As far as I know there is no 64bit
Windows version available.

If you can afford the SSD it certainly helps. I have a new Macbook Pro
with a SSD running on Ubuntu 64bit. It is very fast, but expensive.

I take that Ubuntu runs well on both Nvidia and ATI. My experience
with Ubuntu PPC 9.04 and 10.04 on Apple's Powerbook G4 nvidia chips

I have an Asus, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 256MB, 115 GB SSD, 13" wide -
already 3 years old, only thing I've done is swap for the SSD
recently.

That's cool! I definitely wanna give a SSD a go.

Thanks mate for the pointers :)

SSD - Though it takes some care to set it up right and make sure you
have backups. Intels are the most reliable but most expensive. I'm
trying a Mushkin right now. OCZ while the "fastest" has the most drives
dying based on reviews.
RAM - 4Gb
Video - Discrete ATI or Nvidia 256 MB or more
Screen - Depends on how big of thing you want to lug around 15" wide is
pretty big.
Second Screen - Whatever you get a good deal on
iCore5 best bang for $
USB, USB, USB, USB ...
Opt for whatever the bigger battery is if you want battery life
64 bit

Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Apple - If you want long term quality buy the
business line not the consumer lines.

I have an Asus, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 256MB, 115 GB SSD, 13" wide - already 3
years old, only thing I've done is swap for the SSD recently.

Want more details email me off list..
FYI I'm running Ubuntu 64 bit with a windows 7 VM that runs Arc well
enough for me to teach with it.
