you just made me nervous ...
I can't speak for ECW cause i never had to use that, but MrSid is still  
available in osgeo4w-setup as gdal-mrsid. Just updated it again. MrSid  
works on Windows!

Really sad.
Is the problem with Mrsid the only reason why you have had to take the
VirtualBox solution?
Crashes of debian-nightly master are to be expected, though.
So, we should all understand that the only way to use Mrsid on linux
qgis is and will be
that the user compiles gdal with that support?

Justin,
I also have a copy of Geo_DSDK-7.0.0.2167 but I get the following error after
sudo gdal-mrsid-build $HOME/Geo_DSDK-7.0.0.2167
configure: error: libgeotiff is required to build GDAL MrSID driver

while libgeotiff is actually installed.
This error has been reported a long time ago:
http://trac.osgeo.org/ubuntugis/ticket/21

How where you able to go around this problem?
