Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS for commercial usage

2014-02-06 Thread Alex Mandel
Did we add a ban on selling to the license? GPL normally just indicates
that if you sell or distribute a variant you must include source code.

But yes I agree, there are no restrictions on the usage of QGIS in any
setting.

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS for commercial usage

2014-02-06 Thread Bo Victor Thomsen

A slight modification -

QGIS is licensed under the GPL license. That means, that all derived
works of QGIS has to have the same GPL license. This includes QGIS
plugins made by yourself.

There is nothing that stops you from developing _and_ selling a QGIS
plugin as long you adhere to the GPL license.

The GPL license essentially states, that if you deliver (sell or give
away) som kind of GPL licensed software the source code _has to_ be
included. And the recipient has the _right_ to modify the software ,
give or sell it to a third party without any kind of compensation to the
original developer. But the derived piece of software has to retain the
GPL license so the third party has the same rights as the second party
(This sounds like a line from a Marx Brothers movie ;-)

probably it's better explain that, usually you sell/hire your work on
creating plugin or your work on customization.

so as explained in this and other messages... you can use it in your
commercial infrastructure...

would be fine to finance development or bugfix or documentation if you have
advantages using a free sw as qgis... it's good for your company and it's
good for all (competitors too)

And Giovanni is too polite to suggest that, if you find it useful for
commercial work, a small donation to the QGIS project
(http://www.qgis.org/en/site/about/sponsorship.html) to support its ongoing
development would be much appreciated!

2014-02-06 Thread Brent Wood
Hi,

The QGIS licence (and the licences of other software it uses, such as GDAL,
PROJ.4, QT, etc) fully enable commercial use of the software.

You are free to sell the software, sell products you create with the software,
or sell services you provide using the software. There are no restrictions on
any such use.

The main difference in an Open Source licence from more restrictive ones is
that if you do sell (provide in any way) the software, you must provide access
to the source code as well as the compiled application.

You may be interested to know that ESRI has included the same GDAL libraries as
QGIS in its commercial GIS products - no problems there.

I'm responsible for a custom version of QGIS which is used by several
consultants in the same way you propose.
(http://www.niwa.co.nz/software/quantum-map) This version is developed by QGIS
developers - and is one approach they generate income from their work on QGIS.
