Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS install fail on Ubuntu 12.04

2013-03-19 Thread Lee
Gang,

I was able to use the process linked by Alex to downgrade to Precise
stable, rather than precise proposed. However, after following those
directions I received a series of errors related to CUPS. After some
searching, I used the following process:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1856911 to fix those errors. Once
everything worked, I installed qgis from the terminal. Everything now
appears to be working.

Thank you.

My suspicion, and likely no fault of your own, precise-proposed repos are
turned on. The hint is that qt of this version (4:4.8.1-0ubuntu4.2) is only
 in precise-proposed.

So to unstick the system you're going to have rollback all packages that
came from proposed, and stick to precise-security and precise-updates. Not
proposed or backports. If you do that then you should be able to get it all
 working as expected.

Longer explanantion, QGIS is built against the main ubuntu repos, not the
proposed repo which can shift versions unexpectedly. Your other option here
is to compile it yourself against whatever versions you have, but even that
might not work if qt is too new and doesn't work with the python you have.

 This link demonstrates the concept:

Yes, this is a follow.up to the missing python package.

 Try this:
 Open Ubuntu software center
 Edit - Software package sources
 Other Software tab
There should be two entries for ubuntugis-unstable (and nothing from
 ubuntugis-stable)
 close the window

click on AllSoftware, and enter qt4 in the search field
You should have installed python-qt4 4.9.1-2ubuntu1
If not, you should do it manually.

click on the dropdown box next to All Software, and select
ubuntugis-unstable. You should have QGIS, and a note that 177 files are
hidden. Click on that link. You should get a list of all packages from
ubuntugis, including python-qgis. Clicking on that, you should get
information on the version python-qgis 1.8.0-1~precise3, and if it is
 installed or not.

[Qgis-user] QGIS install fail on Ubuntu 12.04

2013-03-18 Thread Lee
I had QGIS working on 12.04 this morning. Unfortunately, I did not have the
option to fetch python plugins. I played around with a few different
things trying to get it to work to no success. After some reading, it
appeared I needed the python-qgis package. I tried to install this package,
but missing dependencies prevented installation.

Instead, I completely purged qgis and attempted to reinstall through
terminal as outlined here:
http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#26-Ubuntu.

At this time, I'm receiving the following errors.

Sounds like you have conflicting 3rd repositories enabled. Double check
what repos you have besides the default ubuntu. Make sure you're not
using Backports for the whole system.

Update, then try again.

is better to uninstall QGIS from your machine. Try to install by the Ubuntu

No dice. Plus, I'd think that sudo qgis might solve that issue, but it
doesn't.

In either case, near the bottom of the second link is this statement:
OP said they couldn't install 90% of plugins - I found, after upgrade to
Ubuntu 12.04, that only the core plugins (C++?) were available, to get all
the python plug-ins as well, you need to install the package python-qgis as
well.

This is what I attempted before this whole odyssey began. sudo apt-get
install python-qgis. Unfortunately, this generates the following unmet
dependency errors:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python-qgis : Depends: python-qt4 (= 4.1.0) but it is not going to be

I just tried to install plugins, got the error message, did the sudo

Ubuntu 12.04, that only the core plugins (C++?) were available, to get all
the python plug-ins as well, you need to install the package python-qgis as
well.

This is what I attempted before this whole odyssey began. sudo apt-get
install python-qgis. Unfortunately, this generates the following unmet
dependency errors:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python-qgis : Depends: python-qt4 (= 4.1.0) but it is not going to be

Looks like the python-qgis is to be installed from the wrong place. And
python-qt4 seems somehow wrong also.

In general, the error messages are generated upon launch of QGIS. I cannot
even get to a point where I have the option of installing plugins. There is
no option to fetch python plugins.

Unfortunately the permission change has produced no change in results.

Yes, this is a follow.up to the missing python package.

Try this:
Open Ubuntu software center
Edit - Software package sources
Other Software tab
There should be two entries for ubuntugis-unstable (and nothing from
ubuntugis-stable)

close the window

click on AllSoftware, and enter qt4 in the search field
You should have installed python-qt4 4.9.1-2ubuntu1
If not, you should do it manually.

click on the dropdown box next to All Software, and select
ubuntugis-unstable. You should have QGIS, and a note that 177 files are
hidden. Click on that link. You should get a list of all packages from
ubuntugis, including python-qgis. Clicking on that, you should get
information on the version python-qgis 1.8.0-1~precise3, and if it is
installed or not.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS install fail on Ubuntu 12.04

2013-03-18 Thread Alex Mandel

You need to take several steps back.

My suspicion, and likely no fault of your own, precise-proposed repos
are turned on. The hint is that qt of this version (4:4.8.1-0ubuntu4.2)
is only in precise-proposed.

So to unstick the system you're going to have rollback all packages that
came from proposed, and stick to precise-security and precise-updates.
Not proposed or backports. If you do that then you should be able to get
it all working as expected.

Longer explanantion, QGIS is built against the main ubuntu repos, not
the proposed repo which can shift versions unexpectedly. Your other
option here is to compile it yourself against whatever versions you
have, but even that might not work if qt is too new and doesn't work
with the python you have.

This link demonstrates the concept:

Good Luck,
Alex
