Hello Nicolas,

Thanks for those instructions, likely will save me considerable
time. Your instructions seem quite straightforward but just curious
why you would not skip the express desktop install and go straight to
the advanced install directly?

Thanks again…

The Osgeo4w installer makes this easy for you.

They are not numbers. Logic is found here:

 2. Will osgeo4w install an LTR?

I believe the express install will only install the latest stable
3.x version (select Express Desktop Install. The Express Web-GIS
install option is for a web server). The Advance Osgeo will add
options.

a) Select "Advanced Install"
b) Select "Install from the Internet"
c) Select the Root Directory (C:\OSGeo4W64 is suggested. I would
not change it. If you do, make sure you have no space " "or funny
character like in "c:\José Qgis installation"). This is where the
program file will be placed.
d) Select Install for "All Users" and "Create icon on Desktop" and
"Start Menu".
e) Local Package Directory will be offered.
"C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp" . Don't need to change it.
That is where the installation files will be downloaded.

f) Select the Internet Connection. Default is "Direct Connection".
g)Choose a Download site. Default is http:/download.osgeo.org.
h) Look at the final screen shot I sent you. I you select
"desktop", you will see current version number (if installed) and
the new version number. Select "qgis: QGIS Desktop" for 3x or
"qgis: qgis-ltr-full." for 2.x. Or both. Other packages will be
selected for you (like Saga, Grass.) Do not deselect them. You
will also need to accept all licences during the install and you
will probably be asked to add extra packages along the way. Accept
them.

For me, the normal procedure on a new computer is to start with an
Express Desktop Install. Then, I do an "advance Install" to add
extra packages or different versions of QGIS.

I appear to be back in business.

Therefore your Qgis 2.10 is probably at fault and a update will more
likely give you a more stable environment with better and newer
features. Remember that opening a Qgis project from a higher version
to a Lower version can lead to problems so make sure you add the Qgis
version in the name of the file.

However, this version still bogs down upon loading the various layers
but does not fail after the delay. There are about 100 layers,
mostly vector.

Things have probably improved since... that is why and upgrade is
justified.

Anyway, not sure if this is particularly helpful but is my current
thinking on the upgrading process.

The Windows version of Qgis allows you to run multiple
versions on your computer side by side. I personally haven't
used the Windows version for several years so I can't be
sure if you will have any issues running 3.0 alongside your
current version. I run many of the editions I have in
virtual machines. If your PC has 8 GB or more of memory, or
if you have access to another computer that can run Linux,
then you can try it out in a Linux virtual machine or
physical computer environment without disturbing your
current installation.

I can't answer all your questions but it is informative to point out
that the software is constantly under development.

The most common reason to run multiple versions is to run a development
version alongside a stable version. I used to run development masters
alongside the stable version on Windows.

The fact is of running a later version is that not only is it supported,
but many issues are fixed and improved.

Version 2.18 is still supported and very likely you would not notice any
issues changing from an older 2.x version. However it will be dropped
shortly because 3.2 is due to be released in a week or two. This is why
it is imperative you should actually migrate to 3.0 as soon as possible.

Whether we like it or not the progression of software and operating
system development is a fact and as the version of Windows you are now
running is unsupported by Microsoft it would be highly advisable to look
at some sort of migration path to a currently supported operating system
as well as software since eventually Qgis support for Windows 7 will be
dropped. Apart from that the older versions of Windows are vulnerable to
security hacks since MS will stop producing security updates for them.

If a new computer running Windows is a bit too much to buy, a new PC
running Linux is quite capable, or even an older computer running the
latest 18.04 release of Xubuntu is quite capable of running Qgis well.
The Linux community unlike MS actively develops versions of the platform
for low resource environments unlike MS and you are not locked into the
Windows hardware upgrade cycle as new versions of Windows all demand
higher hardware specs. By comparison, most major distros of Linux have
just transitioned to 64 bit only, which in practice means computers not
more than 12 years old.

All these things give me pause and discourage me from wading in to
something that may have a lengthy learning curve and an unpredictable
outcome.  In this case, the devil you know definitely seems to be a

In that regard, I discovered that at some point I had installed 2.8.1
and, remarkably, it would load my ostensibly corrupt configuration
file.  I appear to be back in business.

However, this version still bogs down upon loading the various layers
but does not fail after the delay.  There are about 100 layers, mostly
vector.

Anyway, not sure if this is particularly helpful but is my current
thinking on the upgrading process.

I am happily running 2.18.20, 3.0.3 and 3.1 (nightly builds) side by side on
Windows 10. 2.x and 3.x store their user settings and plugins in different
locations so there are no conflicts.

The Windows version of Qgis allows you to run multiple versions on your
computer side by side. I personally haven't used the Windows version for
several years so I can't be sure if you will have any issues running 3.0
alongside your current version. I run many of the editions I have in virtual
machines. If your PC has 8 GB or more of memory, or if you have access to
another computer that can run Linux, then you can try it out in a Linux virtual
machine or physical computer environment without disturbing your current
installation.

I can load an older project file and then add newer layers to it and
reconfigure them, Etc. This is very tedious but will amount to a recovery. It
is better than starting from scratch for sure. But will the same problem
reoccur?

I have contemplated migrating to version 3 but I'm always leery of upgrades of
anything as they often bring problems with them. In this list I notice many
references to installation issues and things not running. 2.10 is a devil I
know.

can I expect any difficulties installing 3.0 +?

Hello Phil,

I would say less than 50 layers mostly shapefiles. I was hoping to be able
to tweak the project file but that appears to be out of the question except
possibly by a programmer.

Not sure what can be done next, waiting for expert ideas...

When you say “loads many layers”…how many are we talking about – 20, 50, 250?
Shape files, WMS, Raster, Vector? Unknown Exception I suspect is hard to
diagnose, especially now on QGIS 2.10 and Windows 7 which are both pretty old.
