>From what I gather, it's an issue with the hotine mercator projection. All of Michigan's state-sponsored data is provided in what is known as the "Michigan georef", which is based on a hotine mercator. If you search, you will find several individuals in various geographic locations that are having similar issues. I have found several tickets already opened, and several threads attempting to resolve the issue, but there has yet to be an internal solution of which I am aware. For the time being, uDIG works quite well to convert michigan georef to a usable CRS. -- all the best, Lee Mueller Registered Forester #46043 On Mon, Mar 12, 2012 at 2:59 AM, Paolo Cavallini wrote: > Il 12/03/2012 05:01, Lee ha scritto: > > > productive than QGIS. Re: [Qgis-user] qgis vs grass
Jake, I have used QGIS extensively for inventory, management planning, timber sales, and similar forestry work. I think you will find it can do everything you need it to. While ArcMap is traditionally used in our business, the low (free) cost of QGIS presses it far past that of the commercial products. In regards to Forestry, I have yet to find an application where GRASS would be more productive than QGIS. There are, however, times I have had to use another free program called uDIG to handle various Coordinate Reference System conversions that QGIS seems to have trouble with. That said, I think these oddities are isolated to a small number of specific geographic areas. In regards to Acres. There are options where you can turn your default units to "feet". While this will not show information in "acres", it will give it to you in sq ft or sq miles, either of which can easily be converted for those of us familiar with the standard parcel/property land measurements. I also encourage you to use the "open-layers" plugin. This will give you several options for automatically incorporating aerial photography. However, I have found that sometimes the "positioning" is a little off. So use it with caution if you're attempting to outline stands or forest property. I find myself using the regularly available 1998 ortho photos when precision is critical. The forestry tool-kit, is being developed more for certification and tropical applications than traditional forest management in the sense you and I practice. If there is the interest, I would be willing to work with other individuals to develop a plugin more tailored to on-the-ground resource managers. I think this is something currently lacking from the open-source community that would more greatly enhance QGIS' adoption within our field. -- all the best, Lee Mueller Registered Forester #46043 On Sat, Mar 10, 2012 at 8:48 PM, Jake Maier wrote: > Alister, deleting a field worked like a charm with Table Manager, (python > plugin) > Jake > > -Original Message- > From: Alister Hood [mailto:alister.h...@synergine.com] > Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2012 8:45 PM > To: qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org > Cc: j...@jmforestry.com > Subject: RE: [Qgis-user] qgis vs grass > > > Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2012 19:26:26 -0500 > > From: "Jake Maier" > > Subject: RE: [Qgis-user] qgis vs grass > > To: "'Noli Sicad'" > > Cc: qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org > > Message-ID: <006301ccff1d$9ad3fba0$d07bf2e0$@m...@jmforestry.com> > > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > > > I try to delete some of the fields (columns) in the attribute table > > but the delete feature is grayed out weather I toggle editing mode on or > off. > > How can I delete a field? > > Jake > > Deleting a feature is not the same as deleting a field, and requires a > feature to be selected. > Deleting a field from the attribute table window is I think only possible > with QGIS master and gdal 1.9 > > ___ > Qgis-user mailing list > Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org > http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user > ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

RE: [Qgis-user] qgis vs grass
Thanks Noli, That was exactly the advice I was hoping for. I write forest management plan, and work with some biologists on Natural Resources Inventories. I provide the mapping with a bit forestry consulting as a sideline. So I want to show drainage maps or vegetation maps (airphotos or topomaps overlain with different shaded polygons). One important future goal is to show particular stands depending on information in the database. I also was hoping grass may provide better ways to calculate area. I need English system, acres. I think that is not provided in QGIS. [Qgis-user] qgis vs grass
I'm new to qgis. I used ArcMap before so I have some GIS experience. I have the grass plug-in installed. Should I try to setup the grass database right away and try to do everything within grass or should I first use just qgis without Grass until I get more familiar with it. Any pointers are very welcome. Thanks in advance Jake ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
