Hi, > > I can see that the Chicago Ward Boundaries layer is in WGS84 it is not in WGS84, it is in "NAD83 / Illinois East (ftUS)" and was *reprojected* over a WGS84 layer, or a Google Mercator one, etc. Beside the layers from the openlayers plugin -that are not reprojectable- you can do also the other way around --> wgs84 (or whatever else) to "NAD83 / Illinois East (ftUS)" (or whaterver else). You control this by a) giving all layers their *own* CRS b) setting the CRS for the project c) enabling OTFR everything will be reprojected in the *project* CRS > but I'm not able to make it work with this layer from the Census. I have downloaded the "Primary and Secondary Roads" layer of Illinois. The layer is in the "EPSG:4269 - NAD83" CRS, a geographic one (the wards layer is in a projected CRS). In the attached image you see that everything matches perfectly: the project is in "NAD83 / Illinois East (ftUS)" OTFR is enabled this way both the "EPSG:4269 - NAD83" layer and the WGS84 layer are reprojected in the "NAD83 / Illinois East (ftUS)" CRS. http://ubuntuone.com/5UQj3Yi7S8QhhECwsM7dxf try also open this project http://ubuntuone.com/0Yv3yPV3kL5tXdfLsy0NS9 cheers -- Giovanni -- ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

This is a link to some of the other data I'm using - if you select Illinois and download. http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/shapefiles2010/layers.cgi I can see that the Chicago Ward Boundaries layer is in WGS84 but I'm not able to make it work with this layer from the Census. Can you tell me how to reconcile these? I know this is basic stuff, but I've only used ArcView before and I'm new to QGIS. Thank you! Re: FW: [Qgis-user] problems with layers from one source
Okay, per all of your suggestions I have tried these things: - Manually setting the CRS for each layer in properties --> general - I tried projecting all layers with on the fly transformation enabled AND disabled - I reprojected all layers after adding them - I tried saving as for layers that weren't matching up (the ones in the millions) and setting the CRS for the saved as layer. - I made sure the settings were for decimal degrees and not meters or feet - I refreshed the page after every addition - My document is set to "prompt for CRS" rather than use project CRS or use default CRS I am still having the same problem after trying all these things. In the properties menu, everything looks like it's in the same CRS and I've tried two different CRSs, but the layers still do not show up correctly on the map. The layers are all vector layers for Chicago, USA and I've been using WGS 83 and NAD 83 for the CRS. Any other ideas? Thanks so much for the help! Re: FW: [Qgis-user] problems with layers from one source
Two things to keep in mind: - When the option "Settings>Options>CRS>Coordinate reference system for new layers" is set to "Use project CRS" or "Use default CRS...", any layers you add which don't come with CRS information will _look in QGIS_ like they have the same CRS... except that they won't all show up in the same place on the map. - In at least some recent versions of QGIS (and perhaps depending on the render caching setting or something), when you change the CRS of a layer the map is not automatically refreshed. You need to do something to force it to be refreshed - zoom or pan slightly, or add a layer or something. (And of course the layers will stay in the same location if you do not have 'on the fly' reprojection enabled in the project properties... which is different from enabling it by default for new projects). They can not be in the same CRS. A latitutude longitude CRS has valus for longitud +- 180 and for latitude +- 90 Degrees. A crs such as a UTM (for instance) could have values in the 10,000 to less than a million for the east, and northings could have values from 0 to almost 10,000,000. Then, your data could not share crs. If you change the crs in propertied/general/specify crs that aill not make any difference and could make the problems worst since, for instance, if your data is in the west hemisphere and you load data from a utm layer as a latitude longitue crs , any GIS (not only qgis)all will be displace the layers, since utm do not handle negative values. In order that data could be in the same crs you have to reproject your data. Reprojecting converts from one crs to another totally different (from espherical coordinates to metric ones). For vector layers in qgis 1.7 you have the layer and chose save as, define the file format, choose the original crs and the one you want. For raster layers you have to go to raster/projections/war(reproject). In order to reproject, I insist, you must know the original crs of your data.
