I was into the QL and Z88 in the 80's and 90's. Semi-retired now and
just getting back into all things QL related.

I have a few thousand messages to read on this list to catch up...

I have fond memories of meeting many of you at QL get togethers like QL

Re: [Ql-Users] Email list about Forth on Sinclair computers

2015-11-02 Thread Rod H
If we're talking about Forth on Sinclair computers let's not forget about the
Forth version "Tree-Forth" that was implemented on the ZX81 and the TS1000.
This was a rom that could replace the BASIC rom as a simple "pull, plug"or
as an addon board that allowed switching between the two. A very nice version
with good docs for someone wanting to start with Forth. For the Spectrum there
was Abersoft Forth from Melbourne House. Also very nice.

The English language must have more dialects than any other language on
earth. Deepest Africa, back-of-beyoud Oz, Southern USA, Brooklyn USA, Canadian

languages have similar variations.

into AVG and turned off all auto updates and scans and now my machine does what
I want it to do when I want it done, not the other way around. I still like
AVG but not when it wants to take over my machine.

Re: [Ql-Users] Things I have learned...

2014-04-28 Thread Rod H
Long ago I learned one of life's prime lessons. My wife and I lived in
apartments for 2 1/2 years moving every six months (early gypsy phase) and each
move cleared out all the unnecessary junk. Then into the 3-bedroom townhouse,
still just the wife and I, for 17 years. Then into the big house for 25 years
- still just the wife and I. When coming here we divided up the house equally
- I got the workshop, half the two-car garage and the big room above the
garage. She got the rest of the house. I proceeded to fill my portion with
Sinclair computer stuff, Timex-Sinclair computer stuff, QL computer stuff,
ordinary computer stuff, camera stuff, car stuff, motorcycle stuff, and other
stuff. Now she wants to move again.

The lesson? You always acquire stuff to fill the available space. And more!

 From: pg...@q40.de
 To: ql-us...@q-v-d.com
Subject: [Ql-Users] A seat in the lifeboat?

 Hi,

since the turn of the century, I invested a lot of time into some QL
hardware and software projects. Except the Q60 Graphics Card, all of
them actually worked, and have been shown to a few friends.

I didn't have the motivation to finish them. For a long time, the reason
was that I saw the requirement for a free QL operating system first. I
spent time on that area, trying to help others who had a similar goal.
But we did noch achieve a breakthrough, and my other projects suffered.

Life has changed, time has become even shorter nowadays. It is
absolutely unrealistic that all my projects can be released someday. But
maybe I can rescue at least *one* of them, before all work is lost forever.

Everything related to my Coldfire based Q60 successor makes no sense
anymore. The point was high speed, but todays PCs are so fast that
emulation easily beats it. Here are those projects which might still
 have relevance:

 * QLwIP: QL native TCP/IP support, and some applications for it like
 email, webserver, browser etc.

 * QLPUI: A modern GUI for QDOS, with themes and proportional fonts. Runs
on native hardware and on emulators. A simple demo can be found at
 http://terdina.net/ql/software.html

 * Q60 Graphics Card: Flatscreen monitor support and other improvements
 for the Q60

 * QLMMC: An SD/MMC card adaptor for the parallel port of Q60 and
SuperGoldCard, easy to plug in, but speed only similar to floppy

 * QLSD: Internal SDHC card harddisk for the original QL, using the
 microdrive slots

 * Q68: Native QL computer on a 8x10 cm board, flatscreen support, SDHC
cards, sound, SER, ethernet. CPU is within an FPGA chip. Runs both QDOS
Classic and Minerva. The operating systems themselves seem to work
allright by now, also Basic and some programs. Other programs might
never work, I suspect further bugs in the CPU.

Which project deserves a seat in the lifeboat? Which one would *you*
prefer to see finished - even if it comes with limitations?

 All the best
 Peter

[Ql-Users] New to the forum

Hello,

This is my first time on the QL forum so please be gentle.

I've recently dug out my QL gear to sadly find that the years have not been
kind to my microdrive carts, Just no quality anymore...it's only been 25
years!

As I'm sure you all are aware, the little foam pad crumbles or falls off. I
want to copy those carts that are still functioning before they give up the
ghost. Can anyone give me a suggestion of a program that will simply copy my
operable carts onto a disk. I use a Trump Card and 3.5 inch disks but some of
my library are still on mdv cart. Wcopy does not work for all.

Many thanks in advance,

I don't know if your Trump Card has the format ram1_,mdv1_ command -
part of the Tony Tebby toolkits on interfaces.
Minor typo, no comma in it, between ram1_ and mdv1_ and the underscore after
 the 'mdv1' is optional.

If you still have your Trump Card manual, look for further details of this

  RAM drive, of course.
I should have said as well, just to clarify:

You can check if your QL has ramdisk simply by entering the command:

 DIR RAM1_
It should show a result like:

 RAM1
 100/100 sectors

the title in the first line and the numbers in the second line may vary a
little, depending on exactly what system you have. The numbers refer to the
number of 512 byte sectors in the ramdisk - free sectors/total sectors.

The command to make an image of a microdrive cartridge which has been placed
in microdrive drive 1 and to be copied to ramdisk RAM1_ is:

 FORMAT 'ram1_mdv1'

What this does is to make a sector by sector copy of the microdrive
cartridge, which it puts in the drive called RAM1_. If you've never used
ramdisks before, they're just like microdrives or floppy disks but exist
only in the memory of the computer. As Tony said, if any part of a file
copied with the FORMAT 'ram1_mdv1' command is faulty, the filename will show
up with a '*' character alongside it when you list the files with DIR RAM1_

As ramdisks are only 'temporary' media in memory, as soon as you have been
able to copy the cartridges into RAM disks, you can then use WCOPY RAM1_ TO
FLP1_ for example to copy the files to floppy disks.

I assume you still have the manual for your Trump Card and Gold Card, if
not, you can get copies from my website at
http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/docs/manuals/index.html (scroll down to the Miracle
 Systems section).

able to copy the cartridges into RAM disks, you can then use WCOPY RAM1_ TO
FLP1_ for example to copy the files to floppy disks.

I assume you still have the manual for your Trump Card and Gold Card, if
not, you can get copies from my website at
http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/docs/manuals/index.html (scroll down to the Miracle
  Systems section).

Thanks for the super info. I'm successfully transferring from cart to
disk. Of course the disk content will need to be amended from mdv to
flp or I'll try the flp use mdv command whenever using one of these
 disks.

 Hi Rod,

You seem to be doing well ... :-)

Dilwyn's web site is a mine of archived QL information and programs
 (or APPs).

You can most updated versions of items from there, provided that you
have the original versions, so you will only need to store from
 microdrive your own data.

Hi Malcolm,

So far so good!

The good thing about old-timer's memory is that the long-term is still there
even after the short-term goes to crap. I built my first QL from a kit back in
1985 - 27 years ago!! I don't know if it was sold as a kit in the UK but was
in North America by A+ Computer Response...the main QL seller at the time... as
a way to get the QL into the marketplace.

Getting updated versions of software I've bought would be great but the problem
is the carts are failing fast...hence my wanting to copy them. I no longer
have any of the Psion carts functioning but I do have Exchange on disk so safe
there.

The QL Forum site is also new to me and is excellent as well. I'll pass on the
URL to those QL users here across the pond who aren't familiar with it.

best,

Rod
