Objet : [Ql-Users] QL Today + DVD

My final (for the foreseeable future) QL Today arrived this morning.
I'm exploring the DVD. I've got both QPC2 and SMSQmlator (Java7 on Vista)
running. SMSQmulator runs fine directly from the DVD but not much use with
read-only filesystem. I copied all the files from DVD to a folder and ran it
from there but keep getting this message: Can't read SMSQ/E file! :
java.io.IOException: The process cannot access the file because another
process has locked a portion of the file.

I'm launching it by opening the folder and double-clicing the .jar file. The
error happens even if I restart the computer and it is the first thing I
run.

No problems with QPC2 but the best display quality results in a tiny QL
window within the QPC window - I can scale it up by setting the bottom
resolution (under 'Window mode' checkbox) higher than that of the top
resolution, but this usually results in a reduction in quality.

Good fun playing, but I must drag myself away to tidy up and get dinner
started before wife comes home from work and I go out to mine!

Ian.

All issues of QL Today (including the next one itself) will be on the DVD in
digital form and - a surprise: QPC2 Version 4 will be on the DVD - thanks to
Marcel Kilgus in full version. Plus loads of other material - Urs was quite
 busy.

I have reduced the subscription rate on http://smsq.j-m-s.com -
if you don't want to miss issue 4, then you can still subscribe
to the current volume and get all 4 issues in one go as soon as it is ready.

Please note that the latest date to place your order is the 30st of August -
I need to know the total print run by then.
I will not be able to produce any re-prints as I used to do this
in the past at the time of the next issue print, but as we will not
have a next issue, it will not be feasible (costs are too high).

I am very glad that we finished this volume properly with a positive big
bang issue and not finish half-way or disappear like several other projects
in the past did. It has been a great time and I want to thank everybody who
helped in the past 17 years - editors, authors and readers!

So don't miss the very final issue! Who knows, it may well be a collector's
item in some years - and one thing is for sure: there
 won't be many!

ps: the end of QL Today does not mean that I give up the QL!
And if you like to use QPC, you may find that QPCPrint is something you need

Surprise! It only took 6 years, but finally there is another official
beta of QPC ;-) Don't hesitate because it's called a beta, it's very
stable, I only want people to test the new keyboard driver first
 before calling it a release.

It includes the latest SMSQ/E v3.16.

 New features:
    - Added new keyboard driver that doesn't rely on DirectX anymore.
DirectX support in Windows became worse and worse over the years,
so now QPC can use the Windows keyboard driver. Much work has been
but into this feature to be as compatible as possible, so I hope
it works for all countries and that even KEYROW continues to make
      some sense.
SMSQ/E keyboard tables like the ones created by Clavier will NOT
work with this driver, but the old driver is still in there, just
select SMSQ/E as the keyboard driver in the configuration
      dialog.

    - Basic support for floppy disc images. Images can be configured on
boot but currently not changed afterwards.

    - Various bug fixes including a probably more stable screen driver.

    - Some CPU fixes thanks to George Gwilt.

While I'm at it, does anybody still use the fullscreen mode? I'm
considering moving away from DirectX completely, which would also get
rid of native full screen mode. But in times of LCDs it's probably not
 that important anymore anyway.

 Download link: http://www.kilgus.net/qpc/downloads.html

 Cheers, Marcel

I havent been able to test it before now, and only scantly at that.

My machines now run Windoze 7, either 64bit or 32bit versions. I struggled a
bit to configure SMSQE, as none of the changes I made to it via the QPC
configuration screen, nor the MenuConfig application seemed to get saved. So
after some faffing around, unsure of whether Id downloaded the Demo by mistake
or what, I figured out the problem and a solution. W7 wont allow just any
program to make changes to files in the Program Files directory. One solution
is to copy the smsqe.bin file to a harmless temporary folder and update it
there using MenuConfig, and then move it back to the correct location.

Regarding your question about full screen mode [FSM], I prefer FSM on my
laptops, but find it gets too big and unwieldy on my large display. Of course
there are limitations/irritations whan using the current FSM, such as when
using Remote Desktop Connection, and sometimes when coming out of sleep mode.
FSM gives the feeling of running a real, top-notch QL, though, which is why I
prefer it. I guess I can learn to live without..

One problem with W7 I find, is that M$ seems to have a new policy when
updating the OS: It can update quietly when you arent looking and shut
down/restart the computer without user consent! I suppose it is possible to
alter this behaviour (though I havent tried, as I have more and more given up
the struggle to maintain my system manually in accordance with my own
idiosynchratic requirements in the teeth of Windoze's reluctant cooperation!)

Therefore my question is: Is it very difficult or a great deal of work to make
smsqe hibernate? QPC could then react to a shut down request from Windoze by
saving its own state before quitting. On restarting QPC (or any other
platform) one would have the choice of resuming the previous session or
starting afresh.

Whatever the answer to the question above: QPC is still the best QL Ive ever
had the pleasure of using, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MARCEL!

Per

Can't recall the exact problem but Marcel suggested QPC should live in my
files problem solved - strange but true.
so far no problems with QPC in W8 (which I'm coming round to Metro and all )
seems like the norm (or trending getting down with the kids) is to make
everything work like a tablet, shame surely can't be that much more coding to
make stuff duel prupose.

Hi Bryan, and well done Wolfgang

same thing happened on my PC Brian first time.
Although the files and .jar file appeared in the folder it would not load, I
moved the files to a new folder then  right click and choose Extract all then
it works

BTW not Ql related but I've had strange screen shut down usually after a left
mouse click since upgrading Java prior to trying QLmulator, a reset to before
the upgrade seems to have cured this

I'm way down the ladder of computer literacy just about one rung up thanks to
Sbasic so here's what could be a silly question for those that might knoe -
I have an Asus TF201, (Andriod) great machine for my needs if reliability is
not an issue (been off for a new on/off switch already), I see that Java can be
downloaded  to Andriod devices, so could QLmulator run on my tablet?
QLmulator on tablet QPC2 on PC both on network - got to be good

Re: [Ql-Users] Snowbound? and Ice Cream Sandwich

2013-01-18 Thread WILLIAM WAUGH
Snowing pretty constant here in North Nothumberland but it's lying level so
far. a level fall has to be a deep one to stop us getting about up here as
we're used to driving on roads that never see a gritter, snow tyres are a must
though.
As long as the wind does not get up we should be OK.
Looks like I might have made a wrong decision with a purchase of an Asus TF201
which is now in the Czech republic for repair, time will tell but a brilliant
bit of kit apart from the feature of random off and ons, it's Andriod, perhaps
I should have given this a bit more thought as it's now available with Windows
8, I've no wish to go any further down the Windows route as 7 does all I want
and runs QPC2, not sure if Windows 8 would run Qpc2 or not but probably no
chance on Android, interestingly a cold boot of the tablet brings up three
choices and mentions Linux (cold boot - forgive the terminology, I'm not sure
if this is accurate just used on some Asus forums) .
Anyway Dilwyn if your snowed in for a month or two you could run up a Ql - PC -
Andriod emulator or vise versa

Anyone (U.K.) not snowbound yet? Or are we all stuck indoors happily using our
QLs?

No sign of fresh snow yet in the north east, although it was - 8 the other
night and the door locks froze up solid on the inside of my MGB! Hopefully I'll
be back home before the snow hits this evening.

To know the exact present copyright position we would have to have
access to the legal agreement between Jan Jones and McGraw-Hill; the
legal agreement between Jan Jones and Quanta; and any possible legal
 agreements between Quanta and McGraw-Hill.

I doubt this will help much, but inside my copy, a Quanta limited edition one
according to the cover, I see the following at the bottom of the Preface to
 the 2nd Edition page:

 Copyright Notice
As of December 1987 all rights in this book reverted to Jan Jones. No portion
of this book may be reproduced without her written permission.

On the page before that I also see this:

This QUANTA LIMITED EDITION prited in July 1989.

Copyright 1989 Quanta. All rights reserved. No part of this publication may
be reproduced .. without prior written permission of QUANTA, or of the
 original copyright holder.

Now, given my limited legal qualifications - I'm not a lawyer and I don't
play one on TV either - but it sounds to me that we can get permission from
 Quanta or Jan Jones?
Quanta have discussed this before and are aware of the 'reverted to Jan Jones'
issue.

Previous reprints were organised (I think) by Phil Borman and possibly John
Taylor.

There is an email to this list by John Taylor on 7/3/11:
The QL must be very much alive.
The used Jan Jones book sold for £23 on eBay.
Quanta sold them, new, for £8
JJ got £5 and Quanta paid for the reprint out of their £3.

Which at least shows John Taylor has at least some knowledge of the matter.

As Sarah is away, I'll ask Alison to delve into past Quanta minutes to see what
if any information we can find on the subject, as I don't know whether the
original Quanta permission was for one reprint or ongoing.

Dilwyn Jones

are we allowed to read the book
