Urs, thanks for the heads-up! Had to buy it from the US store because
for some reason the UK store does not "deliver" Kindle editions to
Finland. Amazing that she went through the trouble of retyping and
republishing the whole thing.

Re: [Ql-Users] OUT NOW!

2014-11-03 Thread John Gilpin
After following the thread, on this list, regarding the interest in Jan
Jones's book "QL SuperBASIC - The Definitive Handbook", I was asked by
QUANTA to see if I could set up a rapport with Jan to see if she would
give QUANTA permission to re-publish her book in electronic format - PDF
or e Book formats -

You may remember that the book was first published by McGraw-Hill (UK)
Ltd. in 1985 and due to overwhelming demand by QUANTA Members and with
Jan's permission, the QUANTA LIMITED EDITION was published in July 1989.
Many QLers (both QUANTA members and non-QUANTA Members) now have copies
of either the original or the QUANTA Reprint.

At first, when I contacted Jan, she expressed surprise that this book
was still in such great demand and said that she would consider our
proposal to re-publish the book and get back to me.

This she did later in the summer saying that she was currently(then)
considering the possibility of re-publishing the book herself in
electronic format and would let me know her final decision when her
considerations were completed. This was the last I heard until earlier
today I received the following email:-

START COPY EMAIL:

Hi John,

I hope you are well and that the 30th anniversary celebrations went
swimmingly!

I have finally managed to e publish a new edition of /QL SuperBASIC -
The Definitive Handbook. /It's taken quite some while, because it proved
to be impractical to scan it in - so I have retyped and reformatted it!

I believe it should be available in all Amazon markets now, and can be
read on the free-to-download Kindle-for-PC software if people don't have
an actual hand-held Kindle.

The link is www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P569EH4

The new cover is lovely, the book is priced at a very reasonable £5 -
the only thing missing from the original is the index, which is slightly
tricky on a book with no page numbers. Kindles do have a text-search
capability though, which should help.

I'd be grateful if you could spread the word.

All thebest, Jan x

END COPY EMAIL.

I will respond to Jan's email with the thanks of all QLers for her hard
work and support for the QL now in it's 310st year.

All we need to do now is to buy our copies from Amazon - see link above
- My copy has been delivered by Amazon Whispernet and is just waiting
for me to get back to some activity requiring Jan's expertise.

Kind Regards,

John Gilpin.

Hi Petri,

I have an Amazon Prime account, so have borrowed the ebook from the
lending library in Amazon.

I think the Contents list or Index could of been entered as bookmarks in
the Kindle ebook. But we can not have everything.

But since the ebook is protected by DRM, this can not be done, well not
legally...

It is amazing that Jan still wants to do the work after all this time.

Derek

I have read the few demo pages at Amazon and find it a bit circumstancially
to use this version as a serious book. I have the native one, and this is a
lot better to flip from page to page and to search for special things.

My printed book has the numbers of the pages I want to look at written in

Hi George,

I prefer to read QL books and manuals on the Kindle.

The Kindle can include notes and bookmarks, but I have only borrowed the
ebook from the Amazon Lending Library, so is protected by DRM.

Hi Derek,

Kindle DRM is pretty simple to deactivate. I did it myself some time ago when I
needed a paid for Kindle book on my other reader for work. The iRiver needs
ePub format, so a quick de-DRM and a Calibre conversion, and it was done.

Legally, it's a bit tenuous of course, I own the Kindle version and paid for
it, and nobody but me can read it, and I only read on one or the other device,
plus it counts as a backup in case Amazon decide to lock me out of my books one
day, as they do.

I'm sure a recent change to copyright law in the UK made provision for this
sort of copying, but, as mentioned, it's tenuous - and was at the time,
definitely!

Cheers,
Norm.

Hi Norman,

I can remove DRM easily, I doubt it is ethical.

BUt I think for a personal copy, I would like to add notes to the ebook,
which meaning I will have to buy the book.

Hi Derek,

I agree about buying the book. Although I don't really need it nowadays, I
remember being extremely frustrated at not being able to get a copy all those
years ago. Until, that is, Quanta made it possible, and I snapped up a copy. I
still have it.

I often add notes to my Kindle books too. Like Fermat would have done, if he'd
had a Kindle!

I better add that I only remove the DRM on my own paid for books!
