[ql-users] Q40 I/O
My Q40 IDE is currently fully used. (One hard disk and an EZ-135, for a total of 5 partitions). I was wondering if it was possible to add a second I/O board on it, and would it work with SMSQ/E ? Or even only with Linux ? (Target: moving another HD from my PC to my Q40, as well as a CD-Rom reader, I would then give SMSQ/E another 3 partitions, and a try to linux on Q40 on the remaining of the disk (which gonna be in the 6/8/10 GB range in size)) (I'm still hesitant about the use of the second ISA slot, should I reserve it for an ethernet card, if it ever work with SMSQ/E ?)

It should work with both, provided you configure the new I/O board properly (secondary IDE channel I/O address and IRQ). Writing a device driver for an ethernet card is definitely possible under SMSQ/E, the problem is the lack of TCP/IP stack so far (and I don't know how easy it will be to use Jon's TCP/IP stack when it will be ready...). QDOS/SMS forever ! Thierry.
Re: [ql-users] Q40 I/O - 2nd IDE port
Hi Jerome, I use a second IDE board on my Q40, actually it is a PC CDROM IDE card with a single IDE port on it. It maps to the secondary IDE address and work great on the Q40. I have a Syquest EZ135 on it, which backs up my BBS to Syquest disk. This not a complete solution, but it does work. Before Thierry's CDROM driver I was intending to use a 250mb IDE Zip drive for backups, but maybe the more subtle solution would be to use CDR or even CDRW disks. This would mean writing a CD Creator program, or porting one from Linux. I am not sure how much work the porting would be, or would it be easier to write it from scratch in SMSQ/E. Derek Stewart

Re: [ql-users] Q40 I/O
There are probably two IDE channels I/O ISA cards available: plugging such a card as a replacement for the original I/O card would prevent using the second ISA slot... Or find yourself a case with ISA slot riser. Allows for 5 cards then. That's what Claus, Richard and me use. Peter
