I downloaded this program and tried running it on QPC2 and on my
Aurora (JM ROM). It doesn't work on either, both times getting as far
as askign where it's being run from - entering the device name gets an
error message 'at line 390 not found' on QPC2, and on the JM ROM the
error message box appears, but nothing printed (or it's being printed
in black on black). Pressing a key then stops the program on both
platforms.

I'll add the URL of your page to my website so that others can find
and try this browser, Tarquin. Keep up the work on it! As useful as
Lynx is, it isn't easy to install with all the long filenames etc
causing us to run into the 36 character filename length limit all the
time if you try to install it in anything other than the root
directory. So I suspect an alternative simple text browser will be
welcome.

Regarding the convversion of html files to plain text, I'd rather see
the output file being a renamed version of the html file, i.e.
example.html becomes example.txt, page_htm becomes page_txt or
whatever, rather than being given a fixed name. This would make it
easier to convert more than one file in the same session.

Thanks, Tarquin, I will take a little look :-)

Just had a try to download, and there is a problem with the link - at
around 3.00pm Sunday 18th February 2001.

I will try again later.

Succeeded in a download later in the day :-)

The 'exe' task halts at line 390, which is the path name of a device ?
No doubt you will quickly solve this small difficulty.

Em... What's wrong with Lynx?
Text only but full featured despite that.

And widely used on many platforms... Especially Unix and Linux.

Hmm from what I read from the docs... it is supposed to work with XHTML 1.0
(Lynx supports IIRC up to HTML 4). I wouldn't know of course since it
doesn't run with SMSQ/E

I would have said:

(1) I never got it to work with QPC2 (sounds like Phoebus explained
that)

(2) it is bloody hard to install on QDOSMSQ if you're not into Linux
etc - the long path names etc mean it has to be unzipped into the root
directory to stand much chance.

(3) the number of files (OK, it includes sources, docs etc) is
overpowering

(4) the full installation is large by QDOSMSQ standards

WHEN you get it to work, Lynx is a great little text browser, but
somewhat overkill for my needs.

I think the difficulty in unzipping and installation is what lead Tim
Swenson to offer the 'cut down' installation on his website, although
Jonathan Hudson doesn't really approve of that one. I think Tarquin's
browser, when he gets it finished, will be adequate for many QLers
needs. Andrew and others will nonetheless prefer the longer
established (and cross platform) Lynx.

I just upload a new version which changes line 390, however the fault
can also by cause by having the wrong path to the distribution
entered. The new version features faster single line scrolling, a
saving of 141K in Dataspace, the ability to handle larger XHTML files
and some other minor improvements.
As to the Lynx vs HB, judging by a version running on Linux it does
not render tables (except for the text) unlike HB. HB handles far more
entities (i.e. £) than Netscape 4, including the Euro if you have
one of the altered ROMs in your emulator (this not tested yet).
I come from part of Surrey called Elmbridge, I have noticed an ex-QL
company called PCML from Esher, does anybody know anything about them.
  Thank you for downloading HB.

Thanks, I knew that you would be on the 'case' quickly :-)

I will download the new version soon.

Don't worry about Lynx too much. Your browser will inevitably be
different and have its own feature set.

If it runs on all QL's - at present QDOS and not SMSQ - and is easy to
install and use, then you are on to a winner in having a body of users.

I think they made some hardware ? Not sure what though ...

That's OK ... a big thanks to you for writing it and making it
available.

I hope everyone on this list will try it, and help drive the usability
of the QL into the 'web era' that bit more forward ...

I was experimenting with Jon Dent's soql TCP software last night, under
QPC2 v2. Everything is operating as expected, yet I haven't figured out
how to address the PC's internal modem yet.
