Brother 2024L - 24 pin dot matrix.

My first printer for the QL was a Diablo 630 daisywheel.
This had a 3 chr absolute tab command - which was superb for assembling
one line data in any order.
Along came the Brother in 1966 with Diablo emulation.

It has worked now for 17 years totally trouble free - other than
clearing the head with isopropyl alcohol occasionally.
I am sure it is way over its design life.

Re: Re: [ql-users] What printers do people use with their QL??

2003-10-07 Thread Dilwyn Jones

If anyone is prepared to try to to make a list of what people are
successfully using with their systems (stick to modern printers, most
older ones seem to be useable), I'd be quite happy to draw up a list
or short article for Toady to publish to help users select a printer,
and perhaps put it on my website and update it as required.

Is there a rule of thumb that we should look for in leaflets or web
pages to help decide that a printer works by control codes rather than
pure GDI printers, e.g. it offers DOS or HP emulation? What about Mac
printers, are they GDI-only, for example? (postscript?)

To add one to the list, my Epson Stylus Color 880 (yes, the spelling
COLOR is badged on even UK models) works from Epson control codes,
from both QPC2 and QL systems. It has both USB and Centronics ports.
I'm not sure if it's still available (check Epson's website perhaps).
Certainly, anyone who has bought a printer in the last year or so and
gets it to work with QL software let me know and I'll add to the list.
Those who work in IT or with computers in their workplace could help
by looking at the manuals for their printers to see if they look like
thye have the necessaries to work with QL software.

In case anyone comes across them second hand, the following have also
worked with my QL systems in the past:

Epson FX80 (9pin DMP)
Canon BJ10sx and BJ10ex (inkjet, Canon and Epson LQ emulation)
Star LC10 (9 pin DMP)
Star LC24-10 (24 pin DMP)

To kick this off, as I'm on a day off work today, I'll put up a new
web page during the day which will list printers I know of (or have
been told) work with QL software, including older ones to help when
you come across them second hand and want to know if there is a good
chance they will work with the QL. Obviously, having a control code
set or whatever is only a start, you'll still need to tinker with
printer drivers etc, but then, that's half the fun of QLing isn't it!

I stick with the 850 - but am I correct in believing that
the Epson
Stylus 900 (not the Photo 900) is also fully compatible??

Ha! I use - still - an EPSON LX80 9-pin dot matrix. I find it
far
quicker than the modern printers which put everything into
graphics. It
uses continuous stationery and has its own built in font. Long
may it
   continue.

  Use:

  Epson DX-100 (d/w!)
  EpsonLX-80 (9p dmp)
  Epson LQ-100 esc/p2 (24p dmp)

all OK with /original/GC/SGC [got boxes of continuous paper -
whoopee]

  Epson Stylus Colour 640 (i/j)
ok with QPC2 - but never tried with the 'black box'

  Best regards to all,

Re: [ql-users] Dual IDE controller needed for Q40 - Will Exchange :-)

2003-10-07 Thread Fabrizio Diversi

I Post the a message like this to ql-developers, but the list do not seems
working at the moment.
I am improving a little my q60 for the next Italian meeting and this is
what I did :
- I bought a new dual channel ide controller card from Cables online for the
Q60, and it works ! Now I have installed a CDrom writer plus a CF reader and
40 GB HD together with Ethernet LAN card.
- I found a cordless desktop (Keyboard+mouse) from Logitech that works with
serial mouse protocol so it is perfect for Q60.
- I bought a Hot Swap CF reader for CF type I and II to use it with Q60
using IBM 1 GB Microdrive, but I did not test yet it because it is not yet
arrived.
If anyone is interested in the details, let me know

Ciao
Fabrizio

I am also trying to find a 2.88 Mb capable controller in order to test my
ED drives with Qx0... That would be great if we could have 3.2 Meg fdds on
 Qx0s too...

BTW: For some reason Shoestring Linux recognizes all drives as 2.88 Meg
ones... anybody know why is that? Or if would ACTUALLY work if a 2.88 Meg
 capable fdd controleer is present?

Hmmm in 1966 Brother AFAIK only made sewing machines (probably the pedal
driven kind)...
I suspect Tony converted the needle to write braille, used the pedal to
power the QL (among other things and maybe his 13th shed ;-) and of course
wired the whole thing with an I2C connection ;-)
