Bbeen there and got shafted by the software when I tried to create a 3D look
for that old calculator program of yours, many many many years ago. (I was
still in my house on Newmachar near Aberdeen at the time). If I remember
correctly, 32 is the maximum limit on info windows because the IWs are
numbers in one of the calls in the PE code, by BIT number in a 32 bit
register. I can't remember the call itself, but it's the one that redraws a
number of IWs and passes a Data register holding a bit set for each window
that has to be redrawn.

I think it unlikely (!) that an upgrade to the EasyPtr stuff will make that
problem go away as it is a problem in the underlying code in the PE/WMAN
drivers.

Now, I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong . :o)

Cheers,
Norman. (Counting down until Friday .....)

This is what confuses my simple brain, in order for a reflection there
should be 'something' at the end to reflect back off of. If there is nothing
to reflect from then there shouldn't be a reflection. Using your harbour
analogy, there is a harbour wall to reflect back off whereas in an
unterminated cable, there is nothing.

(Did I mention that I wasn't all that good with hardware ?)

So how does having a resistor stop reflections then - and how do you pick a

RE: [ql-users] Converting Word to JPEG or GIF(slightly OT)

2003-07-21 Thread Norman Dunbar

Hi Phoebus,

oh yes it was ! (AKA I beg to differ !)

It started (?) in DOS where the print-scn button printed the text on screen
to a printer (not sure if it was able to be redirected to a file though) in
text mode. In Windows (3.1 anyway) this was changed to copy the screen, or
active window to the clipboard as a bit map. Under XP this has been removed
- although Tony says that it works if the shift key is held down.

Cheers,
Norman.

[ql-users] QPC command line

2003-07-21 Thread Norman Dunbar

a couple of questions :

what does QPC_CMDLINE$ return - I only ever get an empty string.

Next, I need to be able to access the argv[0] value (usually the executable
name) from QPC v3 because I've got myself a Crucial Gizmo so that I can
transport my 'QL@ back and fore between work and home. When plugged in at
work, the gizmo is drive E:\ and aty home it is drive F:\. I need to write
myself a boot file which will assign the correct QPC_Drive for win1 and win2
regardless of the drive that the gizmo is mounted as.

If I could get at the QPC command line (hence QPC_CMDLINE$) I could extract
the drive letter from the argv[0] parameter and use that to set my win1_ and
win2_ drives.

Thanks in advance.

RE: [ql-users] Converting Word to JPEG or GIF(slightly OT)

2003-07-17 Thread Norman Dunbar

Hi Darren,

normally I'd say 'no' as there are no options in the 'save as' or 'save as
web page' dialogue to save as a gif, bmp etc. However, if you have a modem
which came with some fax software which installs as a printer driver AND
allows you to 'print' to a file then you might have a chance.

If I'm not mistaken, the printer driver for the fax acts like a normal
printer and you can (hopefully) save to a file. I've got no idea what
graphics format the resulatant output would be, but it would probably be
mono and need converting before it could be used.

Just a couple of random thoughts !

Norman.

Hi all,

Is it possible to convert word.doc (MS Word) to a graphics format, ie.

I need to be able to produce GIF/JPEG's from a word.doc file as this is the

Hehe, DISA is actually one of the best disassemblers I know. For any

Well, I just hate looking at old-style programs now, therefore I've

support for the new PE data structures, too. Otherwise one cannot
properly disassemble any new-style programs anymore.

think the rc files under linux are more configuration files for programs. The
'rc' does indeed stand for resource but the contents of the file are similar to
a .ini file under windows (not necessarilly in format but in
purpose). For example the .bashrc file is used by the bash shell to set

It can also be used to define command aliases. Bash reads this file when it

Sorry Dilwyn,

*.rc could also be a script or ini file read in by some Linux application
which defines various options etc that the user has selected for their

RE: [ql-users] 2 questions

2003-06-26 Thread Norman Dunbar

Hi Dilwyn,

RFC = Request For Comment = a 'standard' for something or other. Say FTP is
RFC 12345 (it's not !) then you can go onto the web somewhere and find said
RFC document and read it. Byt the end of said document, you will know
exactly what FTP is supposed to do. You might not understand it however
.

*.rc = Possibly a rescource script for a program. If I'm not mistaken, came
from Windows and you created a text file describing a dialogue or menu which
was input to a resource compiler and the output was then bound to the
compiled executable. I think the .rc was the source code for the resource.

HTH

A couple of questions for the more Linux-minded members of this list,
to help me with a QL conversion:

1. What is an RFC?

2. What exactly is an _rc file (presumably like qascade_rc, the
runtime control file or something like that?)

Just a brief explanation and what the letters stand for, please!

For the ROM slot? IIRC it only has 16 address lines, i.e. yes, it can

CO2 mainly - so no explosion.
All it did was make the teachers demo burner go out.
Some classes connected to water
---

The water was **my** style. Problem was an accomplice - already secreted in
the cupboard under trhe bench - was needed for the trick. Spend two
marbles/ lend Hank Jansen/ promise a date with your sister- or the like.

METHOD
(To be neatly written up in chemistry 'best' book)

1. Connect a bench-water to an adjacent bench gas-tap.

2. Turn off all bunsens.

3. Sit, with attentive forward look, on the bench in front of step-1
connection.

4. Wait until Dicky-Stink (!) was ready with his demo - on the front bench.

5. 3 smart 'just swingin' your leg' heel-kicks to the under-bench door.

6. [The skilful bit - took practice] With hands behind your back, turn on
the Step-1 above, water and gas taps.

7. Enjoy the enormous roof-reaching fountain that followed a spluttering
front-tbench burner.

8. Do detention (again!)

Note: The method never appeared on exam paper - as far as I know. Pity!

walk into the bathroom and find .

8,000 assorted bottled of gunk (not the engine cleaner) each of which has a

In the kitchen, my wife has a fetish for bowls. She has hundreds of the

What's wrong with having hundreds of books, floppy discs, bits of cable etc

We need "The Idiot's Guide to Floating Point Number Theory" I think !

I'm afraid it isn't any better in the mainframe, Unix server or PC world.
Floating point numbers either can or cannot be represented accurately. You
could use C68 and use IEEE format floats (or even doubles) but you still
cannot represent numbers like '10 and one third' correctly. I work in a
software house which writes financial packages for finance companies, Banks,
the motor industry etc and accuracy is needed - but you can't get it with
floating point. All our calculations are done in integer values - even for
currencies which have huge number - like the old Italian Lira (of which I'm
very fond - 1977 was the only time I've ever been a millionaire !).

QDOSMSQ's main problem , as you have found, is not so much the range of
numbers that can be represented, but the way that the software displays it.
I'm sure some of the procedure wriuters amongst us, who understand these
floating point things (I don't !), could write a routine to take in a float
and return a 'proper' string representation for display purposes ...

Norman.

Failing that, there was a utility some time back called 'client server' or
similar. It allowed you to set up a task which run as a server and as many
clients as you liked could connect to it and pass commands over and get
results back from the server. It's probably on Dilwyn's site or Tony's
somewhere.

[ql-users] How many items can print handle in one line ?

2003-02-06 Thread Norman Dunbar

Ok, it's silly season !

I've written a small test program to generate another single line PRINT
statement and found that the limit is 2,746 items in a print statement will
be printed BUT any more than this will simply refuse to print or list. All
you get is a blank screen.

The one line was simply :

1000 PRINT '1'; '2'; '3'; '4'; . '2746';

I tried with other max numbers but 2,746 was the final value that actually
allowed the print to work. Any more and print gave up as did LIST.

The total line length of the raw text (ie not in internal format) was 20,872
bytes.

Cheers,
Norman.

RE: [ql-users] Display_cde GD2 update

2003-02-06 Thread Norman Dunbar

There's always one isn't there !

when the line gets too long - and I'm not quite there yet - you simply get a
'buffer full' error when loading a really really long line into S*Basic. So,
I suspect the limit on the number of parameters in a PRINT is defined by the
length of the actual line of pre-compiled text - 32Kb if I remember
correctly.

I'll let you know what the limit is - if I ever find it !

Cheers,
Norman.

RE: [ql-users] Assembly question

2003-01-31 Thread Norman Dunbar

Morning George,

I wrote an expression evaluator once, many years ago, in SuperBasic and then
converted it to C. Yeuch - all that recursion.

I suspect the obvious answer to how the EE should be written is 'so that it
conforms to arithmetic priority' as in brackets, multiplication/division
addition/subtraction etc. There was an ancronym thingy we used to use at
school, but that was many many years ago and I'm losing my mind, so I can't
remember.

An expression is, if I remember correctly :

( expression )
term * term
term / term
factor + factor
factor - factor
number

and a term or factor can be signed, and are, in them selves just another
form of expression - now you see where the recursion comes in !

If you need/want my sources than I can dig them out for you - just let me
know.

Cheers,
Norman.

I never intended in either GWASL or GWASS to go to the trouble of evaluating
expressions except in a "simple" way. That is in both assemblers evaluation
is done from left to right ignoring implied brackets (parentheses) so

  3+4*8 becomes
  3+4 -> 7
  7*8 -> 56

Other assemblers no doubt will produce the answer

  3 + (4*8) = 3 + 32 = 35

I had to go through several instructions in Turbo'c codegen altering the
order of the expressions so that GWASS wouild get the right answer.

I apologise if people find it troublesome. (Again it is probably another
case of RTFM if things appear to go wrong.)

[ql-users] OT : Intersting foinble when replying to HTML emails !

2003-01-27 Thread Norman Dunbar

I don't want to start a huge thread on this as it is OT, but

I've noticed that when George Gwilt and Rich Mellow reply to an email, it
comes through in HTML with nice blue lines down the quoted text. When I
reply, I force the format to plain text - as it required :o) - and the
quoting is silently removed by Outlook.

I wonder if this is part of the cause for a recent thread with Bill Waugh's
email not having quoted text shown as quoted ?

Cheers,
Norman.

PS. Try it for yourself, pick an HTML email, reply and set the format to
plain text and see what happens.

RE: [ql-users] Q-Trans Trash can

2003-01-22 Thread Norman Dunbar

Dilwyn,

if you wanted something really simple, set the 'backup' date of the file in
Trash to be the original 'update' date of the file before 'trashing'.
Similar, but totally different, to what I do in WinBack. (And you have the
source code !)

If you want, there are FSET_ routines in Winback.bin (and source in
Winback.asm) that you are free to use and abuse. The one you'll want for the
above suggestion is FSET_update('file_name', date_as_number) where
date_as_number is simply the return from FILE_update or whatever.

Cheers,
Norman.

'C' system calls that tap into QDOS stuff. It is actually quite easy
(once I looked it up and tried it that is). Using the date that the
file was trashed would work but what if a person throws the same file
name 2 or more times in a day; perhaps append a letter to the end of
the day if the file is already in the trash?

I am also thinking that you may be able to easily maintain the original
file write date when you move it. I seem to recall a way of doing it
but the details are not coming to mind. This would be seen for example
in the files application. Definitely not a requirement if you date
stamp it as you mentioned but a nice thing instead.

You need 'DJToolkit' it has all sorts of file date routines :o)

Norman.

Hi Joachim,

now then, what's wrong with using a tool to get a job done then ?
After all, computers are *supposed* to make life easier for us arn't they ?
Mind you, in Dilwyn's case

Cheers,
Norman.

What, using a computer to solve the puzzle... You cheater :-)

Joachim

P.S. hey, at least I gave the right answer (and fastest too - must be
working really hard at the moment), even if I didn't do the actual hex
calculations. Not that I want to brag about it.

Curses, I have been found out !

I agree that an assembler *should* evaluate expressions properly, but some
don't I'm afraid. QMAC seems to do it, but GWASL (ie the light version)
can't assemble the original code for the lea instruction. I can't remember
if the original GST non-macro assembler did it correctly or not.

Anyway, as written the code is a bit misleading, in the loop the CONTENTS of
ADDRESS elem_size is being added to A1, which on my QPCv3 is zero, so at the
end of the loop, A1 is still set to $160, then the lea changes it to $270.

Rerunning the code to add #elem_size to A1 each time results in a1 coming
out of the loop set to $19C and then changing to £2AC after the final lea.

So the code as written sets A1 to $270 on exit.
'Corrected' code sets A1 to $2AC on exit.

The expression chico-4*elem_size evaluates to $110 using the QMAC assmebler
so it does evaluate correctly.

Thanks for correcting my 'interesting' version of how LEA works !!

Cheers,
Norman.

Huh, interesting interpretation of LEA, but I'm afraid your 68k might
disagree ;-)

The address register is the base (i.e. always added),
"chico-4*elem_size" is the offset. And of course an assembler must
obey the rule to multiply first, otherwise it's trash.

I'm afraid you have to take that exam again ;-)

Hi Jerome,

The dbra, stops when the counter is at -1.

So your example executes the loop 5 times with d2 set to 4 then 3 then 2
then 1 then 0 and finally stops.

Cheers,
Norman
