2003-10-31 Thread Darren . Branagh

I got the same text - BT (the phone company) and Tesco (his ISP) are
pointing fingers at each other. In the meantime, Dilwyn has no phone at all
- either for voice calls or email/internet.

Seems to think it will be some days before it is resolved.

2003-10-31 Thread Dilwyn Jones

I'm back! (oh no they all say).

Had a problem with my home telephone which also screwed up my internet
connection. It happened at an awkward time when people were trying to
get hold of me regarding Launchpad.

Thanks to Darren for putting the message up here. Modern life seems to
be impossible without a phone and internet connection!

I downloaded the demo of Launchpad from his web site, and have found
that it will not unzip ... it just hangs with :

 inflating : filelist_txt
 inflating : config

Anyone else experienced difficulty or success ?

I've not had reports, but I can send you a copy on disk to try if you
send me a private email with the address to send it, in case it's due
to download problems.

The version 0.90 on my page has a number of problems in terms of
program bugs. I'm close to putting the next version on my website -
thanks to everyone who got in touch with bug reports and suggestions
for new facilities, especially Fabrizio Diversi, whose suggestions
have allowed me to add a couple of useful new facilities like SBASIC
program execution, and John Hall and Marcel who got me to add the DO
NOT SET options for DISP_SIZE and DISP_COLOUR.

I'm glad I was persuaded to release a trial version like this, it's
proved its worth in terms of testing, getting feedback to add new
features and improve ways of doing things.

With luck, full release at Byfleet Quanta workshop. I know Darren is
going to be there, if I can get someone to cover my saturday night
shift at work so I can travel down saturday afternoon I hope to be
there to demo it in person.

In fact, there were quite a few coincidental factors involved, but it
was partly down to changed BT settings on my phone line and an error
by Tesco.net's helpline staff in updating my details.

Suffice to say I was somewhat less than happy with both companies,
especially after the time spent on Tesco's £0.50 per minute helpline
and finding it was mostly due to their error. Once the BT end of the
problem was found, BT fixed it quickly fair play (under one hour).

Thanks Darren and Jochen, life has proved difficult without telephone
and email! And after this morning's conversation with a very helpful
member of Tesco's helpline staff I am more aware of the problems they
face in manning (personning?) such helplines.

I can wait for another version to be put on the Web. Downloading is not
a problem ... although something may have occurred in the zip file.

I expect to be a Byfleet, so will buy a copy :-)
