Qlay and QL2K (unfortunately, yet) don't use a PC's floppy drive directly at all - files have to be copied to the PC using QLtools.exe which is a DOS program which would appear to work with any device the PC recognises. RE: [ql-users] reader question
The keyring thingys are getting cheaper all the time. They made 8Mb ones as the smallest when I got mine about a year ago, but now 32Mb seems to be the smallest as the prices have come down so much that an 8Mb one is no longer viable. A 32Mb one costs about the same as a similar sized CF card. Most of the online PC shops do them, like jungle.com or dabs.com or even amazon. The beauty of the small file sizes in the QL world (as compared to the PC bloatware files) means you can fit a VAST amount of stuff in 32Mb or 64Mb.. I have a fully bootable QL with all the extensions, loads of executable progs, docs, games, etc, even Qascade on mine with a few meg to spare. Try doing that on a PC - you wouldn't even fit a bare install of Windows on it. Cheers, Darren Branagh, Bank of Ireland - Cards And Loans Business, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. OK, thanks for that, will pass it on. > I also use only of those USB thumb drives with QPC - nice having a 64Mb > QXL.WIN file on your keyring!!! Never thought of that, great if you have USB, which reminds me, remember that USB connection you tried to hook onto my PC, never did get it to work, although I only tried with the Stylus printer. Thought it might have been down to Win 95 OSR2 which has a limited USB support but it still doesn't work after migrating to Win 98 SE. One day, having saved my pennies, I'll have a nice modern PC to go with QPC3/SMSQ-E 3 when I get those! The USB pocket drives like those would be great for someone like Norman who does most of his QLing in his lunchbreak in work, that way he would never lose/corrupt his zip disks again and he could take his work to and from home on his keyring! As you say, a 64MB QXL.WIN on a keyring! Remember that little Sinclair X1 radio you ordered Darren? We have a dog staying with us for a couple of weeks and the X1 comes in very useful when I take the dog for a walk! Brilliant reception on it in the countryside around here. Next invention please, Sir Clive: a "wearable" QL to take with me on walks to go with Darren's 64MB QXL.WIN on a keyring! -- Dilwyn Jones

I dunno about Q-Emulator or QLay (I have only had limited use of these, just playing about mainly) But QPC will definitely work with it - I've used a similar USB device on my PC in work and QPC saw it no problem. As you say - once the PC sees it as A: drive, QPC just mapped onto it. Same with network drives too. I also use only of those USB thumb drives with QPC - nice having a 64Mb QXL.WIN file on your keyring!!! Anyone know the answer? "I have a laptop PC running Windows Me. I would like to run QLay (or possibly Qemulator) on it, but it does not have a floppy disk drive. It does have a USB port, and my local PC World store has Packard Bell USB Floppy disks drives at about £30 - could this be accessed by a QL emulator as an external floppy drive?" As far as I know, as long as the floppy drive is seen by the PC as drive A: it should work, but does anyone have any info on this I could pass on to him? -- Dilwyn Jones This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
