To my opinion DataDesign is a better target for such implementation

 Would that be of interest?

Most definitely would be of interest - would mean that we could offer a
much more secure form of database to the wider community I should imagine
- ie. the database stored within a QL emulator, which could be addressed
from a PC or unix using SQL !!

Wouldn't DBAS be another valid candidate?

Finally it woould be a generic parser that can be linked to more than one
database engine :-)

The original idea was to write the parser in archive but in view of the
feedback I think we had better think again.
Perhaps SuperBasic might be better.
Any thoughts?

Re: [ql-users] QL-PC Fileserver

2005-03-18 Thread Dilwyn Jones
Sernet should work on standard QL as long as you have the STX and SRX
split serial ports - which means you need either SMSQ/E or H P
Recktenwald's serial port extensions (SimSer). May have to use a low
baud rate, 9,600 or lower, don't think 19,200 stands a chance on a QL.
Obviously, for sernet, you have to have QDOS and/or SMSQ/E at both
ends.

Serial cabling - refer to the Serial QL article, volume 7 issue 1 page
28 of QL Today - cablign details from Tony Firshman so should work!
(i.e. not from me!)

In all honesty your customer might find it easier to transfer files by
disk. Getting bogged down in serial port and sernet enquiries can take
ages to sort where it doesn't work first time. In theory, sernetting
is easy as long as it works!

Hardware guys will have no problems. Sadly, Tony and Jochen will tell
you how I've only ever had good success between PCs.

Subject: [ql-users] QL-PC Fileserver

Does anyone have a copy of QL-PC Fileserver for sale??
I have a customer who wants to network a PC and original QL in order
to transfer files.

Here we go again - cables he needs, software etc. Surely we should
offer a pack ??
IIRC sernet does not work on a standard QL - what other options are
there if no-one has QL-PC Fileserver??

Now I seem to recall this was asked by me ages ago - but did we ever
come up with a solution?

It will work. It is the same pinout advised in 1988 for QuaLsoft file
transfer, and worked for Roy Wood at Byfleet a few years ago.

(assuming the serial port hardware is OK - it often isn't.
