is content level blocking possible

2000-05-14 Thread Madhav

Hi all,
From the qmail server(on Linux machine) adminstrator point of view I
have a question. All my end users are M$ windoze users. Let's say a mail
with some virus prone attachment(which act on windoze) arrives through SMTP.
Is there any package which scans the mail for all possible known virii(which
act on M$ windoze) before the qmail-queue is invoked. Can anyone give me a
good pointer or some info as to where I can get that kind of packages. I
hope something like this is already existing.

thanks in advance

pop3 error

2000-04-25 Thread Madhav

Hi all,
I have installed qmail in one machine using rpms from "bruceg-qmail+patches"
and it is working fine. Now I installed qmail in a new machine using the
same rpms. Both installations are identical. I looked into them carefully. I
couln't find any difference.
The problem is pop3 is not working properly in the new machine. It is
giving authentication failure error when I am trying to retrive mails
through a pop3 client. But mails are getting delivered into /Maildir/new.
Only retrieval is giving problem. I tried telnetting to port 110 in this
machine. It says authentication failure and connection closed. Can anyone
tell me what the problem is.

Thanks in advance,
Madhav

some doubts in qmail

2000-04-23 Thread Madhav

hi,
i have a couple of questions:
1. The following is the assign file i have. here the first field is the mail
address, 2nd user name(linux
 user).
my problem is i am able to recieve mails sent to both the linux user
and the mailaddress (in my
case [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]). whereas i want to
recieve mails
addressed to madhav only (ie those addressed to mail addresses only).

[root@server1 users]# cat /var/qmail/users/assign
=madhav:msp:510:503:/home/msp:::
=ramkumar:ram:509:503:/home/ram:::
=mail-admin:admin:511:503:/home/admin:::
=sugesstions:cod1:512:504:/coda/qmail/home/cod1:::
[root@server1 users]#

2. my mail clients will be accessing mails only through pop and smtp for
receiving and sending mails. for every mail user is it mandatory to
create a linux user? i actually have about 350 users using mails in
my domain(proposed) that would mean i have to create 350 linux users and in
their home directories i have to create a Maildir. is there any
way by which i can overcome this?

Thanks in advance

delete messages in queue

2000-04-20 Thread Madhav

hi
1. is there any way by which i can delete a particular mail from queue. for
instance

#[root@server1 msk]# /var/qmail/bin/qmail-qread
19 Apr 2000 07:16:27 GMT #45086 677 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
remote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
18 Apr 2000 10:39:22 GMT #45070 1236
remote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
18 Apr 2000 10:54:46 GMT #45076 227 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
remote [EMAIL PROTECTED]

here if i want to delete the mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , one way is to
manually delete it from the /var/qmail/queue/mess/ is there any other
way to do it?

2. if a message cannot be delivered, it is kept in the queue and tried at
periodic intervals for 7 days according to the appendix e.1 of life with
qmail. Can this time of 7 days be reduced to 4 days???

thanks

opinion on my proposed setup!

2000-04-19 Thread Madhav

hi all,

i am planning to load balance my mail service using 2 servers. my proposed
set up is going to be something like the following,

  | --- Mach1 ---|
Mail clients --- Router1 | |-/common/qmail
  | --- Mach2 --- |

i would install qmail in machine mach1 in the dir /common/qmail instead of
the default /var/qmail. Now i would share this directory with mach2 using
NFS or Coda file system. i would now start the qmail in both servers(mach1
and mach2). in mach2, qmail will not be installed and only the qmail
startup script will be created (since it already has access to the qmail
utilities through the share).

My mail clients are using only POP and smtp to connect to my setup. Access
to the mailservers are only through the router machine. The router will
redirect requests in a round robin fashion. the routing is done at
connection level. ie when my first clients connects to the router machine,
the connection is redirected to the machine1. for a second connection he
will be redirected to the mach2.

since the 2 machines mach1 and mach2 share the same queues and control
files, both mach1 and mach2 will serve as load balancing mailservers.

does anyone foresee any problems with this setup? i am a newbie to qmail and
would like the experts' opinion on this setup :)

thanks

Re: opinion on my proposed setup!

2000-04-19 Thread Madhav

hi,
i already have my setup (with router) running for http, ftp and telnet
services. and would like to add this mail service also for the same setup.
This setup actually provides protection from any failure.

You may be able to share maildirs, but I'm not sure what you gain by
sharing one installation between two servers. If the server with your
binaries crashes both servers go down. In your place I would probably just

i use a distributed file system (coda) for storing these qmail binaries and
queues so even if the mach1 crashes mach2 can be still acess it without any
problems.

my concern is if qmail-send is running on both mach1 and mach2 at the same
time, trying to send the mails in the queue will i be having any problems?

qmail startup problems help

2000-04-17 Thread Madhav

Hi all,
We have installed qmail step by step till starting qmail as given in the
qmail-HOWTO. I created sysm. links to /var/qmail/supervise/* in
/var/run/svscan.
But when we start qmail using "/etc/rc.d/init.d/svscan start", the qmail
processes
(qmail-send,
qmail-lspawn,
qmail-rspawn and
qmail-clean) are starting as given in the HOWTO.
But It keeps on throwing the message "multilog: fatal: unable to lock
directory /var/log/qmail:temporary failure". Why is this message
coming?
Also if the machine is rebooted, do I need to create the above symlinks
again? because they are not persistent. I am using redhat 6.1 linux with
qmail 1.03.

Thanks in advance,
Madhav

Qmail Compile Error on linux RH 6.1

2000-04-11 Thread Madhav

Hi all,
I have got the following error while compiling(make setup check). I have
searched for this in mailing list archive without any use. Here is my error.
I am using RH 6.1 linux distro.

[root@server1 qmail-1.03]# make setup check
./load auto-str substdio.a error.a str.a
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open -lsyncdir: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [auto-str] Error 1

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance,

Qmail compilation errors on RH 6.1 distro.

2000-04-11 Thread Madhav

Hi all,
I have downloaded qmail-1.03+patches-12.src.rpm from the site
http://em.ca/~bruceg. I have applied all the patches given. I have created
the uids. Then I compiled the qmail using "make setup check". Then I got the
following error.

[root@server1 qmail-1.03]# make setup check
./load auto-str substdio.a error.a str.a
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open -lsyncdir: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [auto-str] Error 1

But If I don't apply any of the patches to the source and compile then it is
compiling successfully.
So one of the patches that I applied might have caused this error. Can
anyone tell what I have to do to come out of this?

Thanks in advance,
Madhav
