When you check a individual mailbox, do you see the password in
cleartext ?

At this time, QControl does not have options to create/delete email
accounts. You may edit individual email accounts with it, but that is
all currently.
If you'd like to see this functionality in it, email us at the support
link on the website. We are not going to offer support for the
application on the mailing list.

And yes, when you check an individual mailbox, it currently shows the
clear text password.

[qmailtoaster] Two-stage filtering?

2008-10-02 Thread Brent Gardner
I'm currently using 2 (for redundancy) QmailToaster boxes to filter in
front of an Exchange server. They are not currently configured with taps.

Management has expressed some concern because we are unable to retrieve
messages that have been blocked.

I have some questions about taps. Taps won't see messages that are
blocked by chkuser or spamdyke, right?

I am considering implementing a two-stage approach. The first box in
line will do no filtering, it will simply copy each incoming message via
a tap on the domain and forward to the next stage. Tapped messages will
be deleted via a cron job after 7 days. The second stage will filter
with chkuser, spamdyke, spamassassin, clamav, etc., more aggressively
than what we currently implement before sending mail on to Exchange.

Is this a good approach? Are there any gotchas I should be looking out for?

That's the whole idea. Some PHBs just don't get it. ;)

I take it you've experienced cases of legitimate email being rejected? What
was the cause of rejection in those cases? Perhaps you're using an RBL
that's a bit too tight.

If a legitimate sender is unable to send to you you, they should be able to
contact you in other ways to let you know of the problem, which typically is
on their end. If they continue to have things misconfigured on their (the
sending) end, you can always whitelist them if necessary.

Correct.

spamdyke would lose most (if not all) of its effectiveness that way, as the
sending server would become your front end taps server.

[qmailtoaster] Toaster on Debian

2008-10-02 Thread Martin Waschbüsch

Hi there,

I am new to the list and looking for hints and tips to install this
toaster on Debian?

Also, I am no programmer, but still willing to help. (be it testing or
translating, etc.)

Can anyone give me pointers where to start? I saw that some people
obviously have done some work creating .deb packages?

Thanks for your help!

Lucian did port the packages over to Debian, but I do not know what the
status is.
Erik (the current maintainer) has stated that Qmailtoaster is only
supported on CentOS at this point so unless Lucian has gotten the
packages all ported over or you want to learn programming you'll be out
of luck at this point.

I will be working with a few different people. The final support list
is going to be very different.

The ISP, Lightspeed Wireless (of Ohio) has provided me with a 64-bit
build host. This means that we can start moving forward.

Thanks,
Erik

RE: [qmailtoaster] Toaster on Debian

2008-10-02 Thread Myers, Jon W
Most of the packages are available for (insert your favorite Distro here).
Debian, like most others have the various packages. Its just that Qmail
Toaster as discussed on this list typically pertains to the one for CentOS.
There are plenty of mail toasters out there based on qmail, but for some reason
not called Qmail Toaster. For example, the one I usually used was just
referred to as a Mail Toaster, and it had basically all the same packages as
this one, but it was for FreeBSD. What makes all these packages run on
various OSs is just someone taking the time to make sure packages work out of
the box, and provide some sort of scripting to tie everything together. Doing
a quick search, it looks like Bill's Linux Qmail Toaster at
http://www.shupp.org/toaster/ is in fact Debian based. Not sure how old it is
though.

Personally, I typically use FreeBSD or Debian. However, I do find that CentOS
is ALOT easier to use, as things just work. So if you want a tested, hassle
free mail server, I'd suggest using this one just as it is, via the ISO, or
even VMWare image if you don't want to manually install everything. (I went
with the VMWare image a few days ago, and am playing with it now).

My apologies for not providing a valid answer, and perhaps an attempt to steer
away from Debian for this particular application. Just stating that as a
Debian user (at least on the Linux side), I found the switch to CentOS for this
application very painless, as the system still looks and feels just like one
of my Debian systems.

Care to elaborate on that? It's the first I've heard news in almost a
year so I'm naturally curious, even if it's only to figure out how much
work is ahead to make the various things I've put together work on a new
system.

Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

In fact, the last toaster I installed was Bill Shupp's outline, but I
had trouble updating some of the portions to current versions - most
notably clamav, simscan and spamassassin, so I started to look around
for other approaches.
