OK, I read about dovecot.

Nowadays I have about 5 thousand mailboxes. Should I try to use dovecot in
this case ? What do you think ?

Thanks for help.

Courier is very slow with large mailboxes and/or large numbers of
mailboxes. You should convert to dovecot. See wiki for instructions.
Dovecot will replace courier in QMT at some point, but I don't expect to
see that before the end of this year. The conversion to dovecot is
relatively simple, given the rpm in the QTP repo.

I thought
I could lock my

only the external connections (other

So, all my users can authenticate with 587/465 ports to send
  mail and port 25
  is only for receiving
  and sending of external
  server.

I have many clients outside my network, so i can't control them.

Correct usage of port 25 should be forced by access providers,

Any network should allow own users to use port 25/465/587, while
access to external ports 25 should be permitted only to SMTP

But this is a self limitation which is not very used.

I think if block my clients authenticate on port 25 and leave only to
send and receive Internet mail, I could reduce spammers, virus coming
from my clients on port 25.

See this link http://www.antispam.br/admin/porta25/definicao/

information... You could do all three too... Or does authentication bypass
SpamDyke? I forget.

If it does, set up two servers... One for incoming mail, one for outgoing
mail. Turn port 25 off on the outbound server, forcing users to use a port
that's active, like 587. Inbound mail will come in via port 25 from outside
mail servers, use smtproutes to forward it to your inside mail server via
port 587, use SpamDyke to block your users' domain's in the From field
(Works great for stopping a lot of SPAM too!) and then remove the ability to
authenticate on 25 (No e-mail addresses on the server)... If server count
is an issue, use a VM and put both servers on one physical server...

The stock QMT supports TLS on port 587 for submission, although there
is
no way to enforce TLS. Authentication is required though.

SMTPS (port 465) is deprecated, and not implemented in the stock QMT.
If
you really need it, there are instructions for implementing it on the
wiki.

I don't know of a way to block clients from using port 25. Never heard
of such a thing, and honestly can't think of a reason why you might
want
to do this. If a client uses port 25 and authenticates, I think the
processing is the same as if they used port 587. Someone please correct
me if I'm wrong about this.

And have you checked with top / sar how stressed your server is?

If IMAP sometimes works and sometimes doesn't and it isn't about
someone trying to bruteforce their way in , I would consider replacing
courier-imap with dovecot and enabling spamdyke if you haven't
already. And upgrading to latest toaster packages of course won't
hurt.

Otherwise I don't know how to help further, maybe someone else has
ideas how to debug the situation more?

Sounds to me too like a problem with mysql. Have you tried restarting
mysqld? I wonder if you're hitting a connection or other resource
limit of some kind. I don't know mysql tuning off hand, so I'm afraid
I'm not much help with this. Any mysql admins out there with a
recommendation?

I agree with Peter that using dovecot is worth consideration, but
that's mostly imap related, not pop3. If all/most of your users are
pop3, then I'm not sure dovecot would do much for you, as qmail-pop3
is the stock pop3 server.

While spamdyke won't effect pop3 or mysql directly, it will
undoubtedly lighten the load on your server while reducing spam at the
same time. No QMT should be w/out it. If your problem is load related
(which I doubt), spamdyke will help.

Thanks Peter and Phil (and everyone else) for your help on the list
recently. As others participate more on the list, it gives me more
time to spend on other QMT related tasks. I hope to spend less time on
this list as time goes on, but that's only possible when others
participate. Thanks again.

happy I'll update my VM section of the wiki.

A how-to of sorts. Which directories can/need to be on external
stores, NFS export options, mount options, packages req'd for NFS.
That sort of thing. Keep in mind that I'd like to isolate various
pieces of QMT, and this would be one of them.

When addressing non-software data, I'd like to see 3 types treated
separatedly: email store (messages), domain/user configuration, and
QMT host configuration (global settings). Unfortunately, these 3 are
intertwined and scattered about, but I think the distinctions are
logical. Just a thought.

Just to put some notes out there, that doesn't seem like it would solve
 any problems.

Your still stuck with a single point of failure, if your backend decides
to crap out your stuck with two dead front end boxes. Did you ever figure
out what was causing the 100% load ?

What I would recommend is looking at your my.cnf for mysql, and see if you
have it can squeeze some performance by adjusting the query cache,
 waittime out, and other things.

Just some info on what we did, here what we have working and it been
working fine for over a year now.

What we have is pretty straight forward, and might help you in your
 situation.

Are you running spamdyke? That's the biggest thing you can do to reduce
the load. 80+% of messages will be rejected before they even get to SA.

After you get spamdyke running, we can look into tuning SA if needed.
Chances are pretty good that you won't need to do that.

AFAIK, you can only limit the total size of all emails, globally.
I don't know if eMPF has size related rules or not, but it's worth

ok.

  i have enough simultaneous
connections on machines.

  use a cluster of five
  servers in qmailtoaster.

  I found that configuring
  the /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.smtp
  could help with reverse
  dns blocking.

Thank you all

I will reconfigure the spamdyke and write any news here.

Thanks for everyone's help

Me too... Spamdyke is the best solution for qmail

2011/3/22, Michael J. Colvinmcol...@norcalisp.com:

I would revisit why you had issues when you had SpamDyke installed. My
personal experience has been the exact opposite. Prior to SpamDyke, my
sever at the time was getting hammered, and the resulting SpamAssassin
processes were killing it.

I put SpamDyke on it, and dropped the utilization by 75%. Milked another
year out of that server. :P

I agree with Eric... I would never put up another Qmail server w/o
Spamdyke. And, once it's installed (Trivial as Eric mentioned), doing what
you're asking about is even more trivial...

Guys,

You have the example of spamdyke.conf.

I will create the new config

thanks all

Em 22-03-2011 16:47, Eric Shubert escreveu:

Thanks, Michael.

If a server suffers in performance with spamdyke installed, my guess
would be that there's a DNS resolver configuration problem that needs
to be fixed. If that's the case, another rDNS lookup solution would
suffer the same as spamdyke.
