Atmail is nice, but somewaht limited and has some quirks.  The Pro
version may be better.   RoundCube is very similar and seems to be
faster.  I found it more intuitive than Atmail.

[qmailtoaster] new server setup, local mail delivery problems

2007-10-31 Thread Daniel Dekok
Hi,

We've just upgraded our old qmail server to a new qmailtoaster set up,and
its mostly running ok, except for a few problems.

we had a large influx of mail delivered to local addresses today, and it
seems to have clogged up the system. I've got a high enough concurrency
remote (tried 10/20, and up to 60) but according to the send logs, it
doesn't want to deliver or process more then one at the time. Is this due
to the injection of lots of mails at one time? It feels like there should
be a lot more qmail-local processes appearing, but i can't see if and where
that should happen. If it stopped going from 1 to 0 and back to 1, and
concurrently delivered locally to the disc at closer to capacity, the server
would run a whole lot better. This doesn't seem to be aproblem with
remote, which is sitting happily on much higher numbers (currently at 20 due
to me trying to clear the local queue)

The whole queues at about 13000, and preprocessed is about 5000 at this
point in time, most of them are local delivery.

The other question is system load, the old qmail ran on older hardware, and
seemed not to be too overloaded, but this current server runs at about a
system load of 10 or more whenever there's about 100 emials in the queue. It
seems rather excessive, but i'm not sure if its expected or not.

Thanks,

Daniel

Hey David,

There's nothing particular to learn about Xeons, esp if you start with a
distribution like CentOS -- it will pick the right kernel (and all
available drivers, etc.) for you.

You might need to build a second mail server and have this guy "send"
(only) to both of them at the same time. Or maybe more than 2 ... :)

Sounds really good, but I am steering towards some pentium based hardware

That is about what I have now. It seems to do really well with about the
same customer base you have, but I have one business client on there that
sends about 35,000 emails with a maillist manager.
I installing the new mail server with more horse power to take care of my
business clients for the outgoing service. Maybe set up replication for
the old server.

Are you going to be doing something like a mailing list? You'll be
limited by the concurrency, but it will queue up all the messages and
send them when the concurrency clears up.
I have a P4, 2.4G with 512M of RAM (80G drive) that does a total of
12,000 emails a day with NO delays or problems. I'm also not sending
12,000 emails to it at one time, or asking it to deliver emails to
12,000 mailing list subscribers either. That's just the average daily
load for the 300-400 clients that are on the machine, over a 24 hour period.

think about putting up some Google ad's or a donate button. I'd be one

We all appreciate your hard work on the project, however if you are

some of that.

Hi All,

We will have a new server coming online shortly. I have colocated a new
server with VR Hosting and will be making the change before Sunday.

We should not be offline for very long. If this causes any of you
problems, I sincerely appologize.

This change will give us tons of bandwidth, something we have been lacking
with the growth of this project.

I have been working on the next version of qmailtoaster. I appreciate the
input many of you have provided. I hope to have the new version into a
stable status in a couple weeks.

I do recommend that everyone upgrade to the clam-toaster package that Eric
built for us. This is a security issue.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Nick
